Weather Service issues Flood Watch for Carson City region due to arriving storm

Along with a High Wind Warning issued earlier, a moderate to strong atmospheric river will bring significant precipitation to the region prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Flood Watch for Carson City, Carson Valley and much of Western Nevada.

Carson City weather: High Wind Warning issued ahead of storm, Red Flag Warning canceled

UPDATE 2:20PM: A Red Flag Warning issued earlier this morning has been canceled due to arriving precipitation. A High Wind Warning remains in effect until 4 a.m. Thursday. A Flood Watch was issued Wednesday afternoon for the Carson City region, western Nevada and Lake Tahoe.

With valley gusts expected to top 70 mph today, the National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Warning and Red Flag Warning for the Sierra Front including Reno, Carson City, Carson Valley and Lyon County.

Highway 395 remains closed Tuesday at the Nevada-California state line as firefighters continue to battle the Chris Fire that began Monday west of U.S. Route 395, about five miles north of Sonora Junction near the Chris Flat Campground.

Carson City firefighters knock down small brush fire near South Carson Street and Highway 50; Red Flag Warning issued due to gusty winds

Carson City Fire Department was called late Thursday morning to a brush fire reported in the area of South Carson Street and Highway 50 West near the Spooner junction. Firefighters were able to knock down the flames before it began to spread.

Carson City, East Fork send crews to Woodchuck Fire west of Reno

UPDATE 6:23PM: Forward progression of the Woodchuck Fire in west Reno has stopped. No homes were lost. Two small trailers were destroyed.

UPDATE 5:47PM: Much of the localized flooding from the heavy rain has subsided. Winds are calm with a few lighting strikes still happening. There are no longer any severe weather warnings for Carson City.

UPDATE 5:15PM: The Tornado Warning has expired. Flooding throughout Carson City is being reported as rush hours begins. William Street from Mills Park, College Parkway, Roop Street, and Saliman all experiencing flooding issues. Much of the heavy rain has now moved on though there are several lightning strikes still around Carson City.

Preacher Fire in Douglas County doubles overnight

UPDATE TUESDAY 4:53PM: The acreage of the Preacher Fire was adjusted Tuesday afternoon when a glitch was identified as the mapping was finalized. The correct acreage as of 3:50p.m. stands at 4,651 acres.

UPDATE TUESDAY 12:42PM: The Preacher Fire has burned 7,651 acres, according to the Incident Management Team that flew over the fire Tuesday morning to assess the situation.
Douglas County Sheriff Office and Nevada Highway Patrol are working with Nevada Department of Transportation to update the reader boards along Highway 395 from China Springs to Minden warning drivers of low visibility due to smoke.

Preacher Fire in Douglas County swells to more than 1,000 acres, voluntary evacuations underway

The Preacher Fire burning in the Pine Nut Mountains has swelled to more than 1,000 acres, according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center. Douglas County has initiated recommended evacauations of areas at the east end of Pine Nut Road including Fred’s Street, Sandoval, Taildragger, Bluebird, and Bar-J Roads as well as the Spirit Ranch Area including Blue Sage Road, Badger Lane, Robinson Road, and Lena Lane. In addition, the Washoe Tribal Police are evacuating the Bodie Flats area in the vicinity of Courtland Avenue.

Forest Service advises caution on public land during critical fire weather conditions

The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest would like to remind surrounding communities to be aware of the increased chance of wildfire during critical fire weather conditions resulting from high winds and low humidity.

Report: Prescribed burn decisions by NDF cause of Little Valley Fire

Decreased staffing and close proximity of hot materials to the fire line during last October's prescribed burn in the Little Valley northwest of Carson City contributed to an uncontrolled wildfire on Oct. 14, 2016 that consumed more than 2,000 acres, a final report released Wednesday from the Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (NDCNR) said.

Tree uproots in Dayton, Lyon County prepares for more flooding overnight

The Lyon County Road Department reports Route 95A between Yerington and Schurz is reopening as well as connecting roads. Rain is falling in the Virginia and Pinenut Ranges and Lyon County is preparing for additional flood issues throughout the county.

High Winds Causing Problems Around Carson Valley, Flood Warning In Effect Through Midnight

MINDEN, Nev. — Strong winds wreaked havoc over Carson Valley Thursday, knocking down fences, trees power poles and power lines around the Valley. The peak wind reported to the National Weather Service thus far was an 85 mph gust in Gardnerville.

High winds from the current storm system have caused multiple outages Thursday throughout the Carson City, Carson Valley and Washoe Valley areas, according to NV Energy.

Carson City staff is expecting rain from the arriving storm to continue through Thursday. There will be periods of heavy rain and high winds with gusts between 70 to 80 miles per hour.
