With valley gusts expected to top 70 mph today, the National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Warning and Red Flag Warning for the Sierra Front including Reno, Carson City, Carson Valley and Lyon County.
Very strong southwesterly winds will increase Wednesday with gusts 55-70 mph and in excess of 70 mph in wind prone areas.
Ridge top wind gusts will be 120-plus mph. Winds of this magnitude can produce damage and may result in flight cancellations/delays, restrictions for high profile vehicles, and areas of blowing dust, according to the weather service.
The weather service advises that now is the time to make preparations ahead of the high wind event. Bring in the lawn ornaments and furniture, garbage cans, strap down items capable of blowing away such as trampolines, and bring in the small pets. Winds will remain quite breezy through Thursday afternoon as the system exits the region.
Until the precipitation begins to spill over into western Nevada Wednesday evening, a Red Flag Warning for high fire danger will be in effect for the Sierra Front and the Basin and Range.
Historically, significant wildfires have occurred ahead of large atmospheric river events like this including the Caughlin, Washoe Drive, and Swall Meadows fires.
For Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas, rain will accompany the wind mainly after 10 a.m. Wednesday. Precipitation amounts of between three quarters and one inch are possible, according to the weather service.
Thursday will bring a mix of rain and snow likely by Thursday night and a slight chance of rain and snow Friday. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch are possible.
Meanwhile, a Winter Storm Warning has been issued for Lake Tahoe and the Sierra from 4 p.m. Wednesday afternoon until Friday morning. Heavy wet snow and high winds expected. Motorists should plan for difficult travel conditions. Tree and power line damage are a possibility due to high winds, according to the weather service.
Total snow accumulations of 2 to 3 feet expected above 8,000 feet with localized amounts of 4-plus feet along the Sierra Crest, according to the weather service. Accumulations below 7,500 feet are more uncertain and depend on how fast snow levels fall Thursday, but 4 or more inches are possible.
