Carson City weather: High winds to continue through the day followed by rain, Sierra snow
Gusty winds continue to push into the Carson City area Thursday ahead of a storm system that is expected to bring rain and high elevation snow to the area through Friday.
A High Wind Warning is in effect throughout the day. Locally, winds have whipped trash cans into streets and caused tree limbs to fall into power lines. CarsonWeather.com reports today's high wind gust in town reached 44 mph earlier this morning, while in Gardnerville, the high wind gust was 73 mph, according to the National Weather Service.
Peak gust speeds are still expected to reach 60-70 mph in the warning areas, with 80-plus mph in wind prone areas near the Highway 395 corridor and Sierra ridge gusts up to 125 mph. Local areas of blowing dust remain possible in west central Nevada but overall soil conditions are not optimally dry for widespread blowing dust.
Wind gusts have been strong, mostly in Washoe Valley where the high gusts thus far was 75 mph, according to the weather service. Please be safe and pay attention to law enforcement and other officials. Aviation delays and cancellations remain possible as well as reroutes on area roads due to winds. The weather service advises to check road conditions and flights before you head out today.
Precipitation wise for Thursday weather forecasters say there remains some uncertainty as to how much moisture will spread across the Reno and Carson City areas, but overall it looks like most rain will remain limited to near the western foothills through late afternoon. A quick transition to efficient spillover rain is then anticipated across the urban areas to the Basin and Range between 4-6 pm, continuing through most of tonight. Farther south across Mono and Mineral counties, the spillover process is more likely to occur later in the evening, generally between 8 pm and midnight.
Total rain amounts of 2-5 inches are likely near the Sierra and into northeast, California, with 1-2 inches into the foothills west of Reno-Carson City and along US-395 in Mono County.
