The long weekend continues. Memorial Day is for remembering our fallen heroes, those who have or are serving in our Armed Forces. We also honor those loved ones left behind. With several services around the area, you’ll easily find a way to pay your respects. Pick up an American flag at any of the shops or restaurants at the Carson Mall. Stay safe out there, and enjoy the day.

It’s the perfect time to enjoy family and friends and some great music. The Carson Nugget powers it up to rock out tonight with Volt: A Tribute to AC/DC in their ballroom. Dayton Valley Golf Course offers up dinner and a show with this year’s debut of Concerts on the Green. Blues Monster and pulled pork sliders are a great way to enjoy the evening.

Fire up that grill, Carson City, we’ve got the perfect weather to kick off the summer. The early Farmers Market at Musser and Nevada offers the perfect finishing touches to any picnic or bar-be-que. It’s all aboard for train lovers: the V&T begins its runs to Virginia City this weekend and the historic Glenbrook Engine is all steamed up at the Railroad Museum. I’m almost convinced that winter is behind us. Almost. I’ve lived here long enough to expect anything, weather-wise, but this sunshine is hard to ignore. It may be a Monday, but with Memorial Day weekend just a few days away, hopefully this week will just fly by. You’ve only got one last week to participate in the Historic Resources Scavenger Hunt, so go explore the historic westside and keep an eye on those window – the winner of the hunt gets a gift certificate to Café at Adele’s.

It’s going to be gorgeous all weekend long, and there are plenty of ways to take advantage of the sunny weather. The Annual Cops and Kids Open House at the Carson City Sheriff’s Department is a family favorite with free food, activities, and games. Treasure hunters will be kept busy with the Genoa Community Garage Sale, as well as one encompassing the Saratoga Springs area of Johnson Lane. All good things must come to an end, and that includes the weekend. What is beginning, however, is Bike to Work Week. Please remember to share the road with those braving the potentially icky weather during busy commute times.

And the pendulum of crazy weather returns to something spring-like. Granted, the lawns and gardens in Carson City are loving this wet stuff, I just want the sunshine to stay put. The brewery at the corner of Proctor and N. Carson Street will soon be opening as ‘The Union’ and is seeking staff for what promises to be an exciting downtown venture for chef, Mark Estee. A job fair today and Tuesday will have hiring managers on hand to fill the front and back of the house. Wildfire Awareness Month is honored at the State Legislature today.

Finally it feels like spring, and not a moment too soon. Mondays aren’t quite as bad when it’s a beautiful day. The first day of May kicks off Bike Month in Carson City. Muscle Powered has some fun rides to celebrate the annual event, including the Celebrity Bike ride tomorrow and the costumed Westside Cruise on Thursday. Go HERE for more information.

Monday’s starting out a little damp and chilly. Got to love that Northern Nevada weather, right? Expect the temperature to yo-yo between 50s one day and 60s the next all week, with a breeze and some rain thrown in the mix. Author and meditation instructor Molly Dahl leads a workshop designed to help participants create healthier, more balanced lives at the Adam’s Hub on West Proctor Street. No reason to get the Monday blues, but you can head to karaoke at the Fox Brewpub if you want to sing them anyway.

If these April showers are indicative of anything, it’s that we will have impressive May flowers. The drizzle continues off and on for at least the next day or two, so keep your umbrella handy. Get the week off to a fun start with Karaoke at Fox Brewpub. Kick up your heels at El Charro Avita, the High Sierra Swing Dance Club hosts their weekly night out. Find some inner peace as you meditate with the Dharma Zephyr Sangah Sitting Group.

Monday strikes again, but hopefully it won’t be too painful. If you’re off work early, grab some friends and hit up Red’s Old 395 for Martini Monday. Sing Manic Monday at the Fox Brewpub’s weekly karaoke night with J and M Productions. Find something new for your child’s bookcase at the Minden Library Children’s Book Swap; it’s a great way to keep them challenged. Local theater group, the Proscenium Players, welcomes you to check out their monthly meeting. They are always looking for new talent, whether it’s on stage or behind the scenes.

April showers are bringing some unusual blooms to the Legislative lawn. Join Prevent Child Abuse Nevada and Advocates to End Domestic Violence in the annual planting of the pinwheels. We should have a break from the rain by then, but it’ll still be a windy day. Stick around downtown for a special tour of our historic Capitol with Muscle Powered. The storm won’t stop the fun to be found in the valley tonight. Read on to see all your nightlife options, including a free concert at the Sierra at Shepherd of the Sierra Lutheran Church and two performances by comedian Kevin Farley at the Nugget.

March Madness spills into April with the NCAA Championship Game final showdown. Watch the Gonzaga Bulldogs take on the UNC Tar Heels tonight at 6 p.m. If you find yourself at the Fox Brewpub you may be one of the two lucky people with a chance at free beer for a year. Find out what the city has planned as they walk you through the upcoming budget offered at two public open house presentations. It’s a firefighter kind of day. Not only will they be honored at today’s Legislative Session, Firehouse Subs is hosting a fundraiser for the Fritch Elementary School’s PTA.

Like many of you, I have a weather app on my phone. It says to expect some snow this morning, so I’m hoping it’s a liar. Make Monday easy on yourself and let the Pizza Factory take care of dinner. A portion of today’s proceeds will be donated to Paul Guzetta, a 36 year old local man who is battling an infection in intensive care. Lending a hand to his wife and kids during this tough time is as easy as ordering a pizza (or one of their yummy salads or pasta.) Spring has sprung, but apparently Mother Nature didn’t get the memo. Join the Carson Victory Rollers at the Carson Mall and take part in an indoor wine walk and rummage sale. Help Hot Spot Yoga and Fitness for Life celebrate their grand opening with free classes, health vendors, a 5K run, and more. Hit the dance floor with the High Sierra Swing Dance Club; their monthly dance party is held in the Grand Ballroom of the Brewery Arts Center. The first day of spring is here, and while it may not mean the end of the snow, it is a harbinger of longer days ahead. Carson kids and the students of Western Nevada College have a reason to celebrate – spring break is here. The State Legislature has an exhibit on display celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Women in the Military, in addition to several works of art by Nevadans, so make a special trip to check it out. The High Sierra Swing Dance Club meets every Monday at El Charro Avita for an evening of dancing and learning something new.

Oh, this morning is going to hurt. Adjusting to Daylight Savings Time is always a little rough, and this Monday gets going one hour earlier than usual. The Father-Daughter Dance at Carson High is on March 31, but don’t wait until the last moment for tickets. Grab them in the High School Office between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Grab some friends and head to Carson Cigar Co. for Game Night: Cards Against Humanities, Apples to Apples, and Jenga are just a few of the offerings – it changes every week.

Who has two thumbs and is ready for spring? This girl. Monday starts off with some icy roads so please give yourself some extra time to travel. It’s going to be quite a blustery day, but hopefully we’ve seen the end of the wet stuff for a little while. Start the week off with some fun. You can swing dance the night away at El Charro’s, sing the workweek blues at the Fox Brewpub’s karaoke night, or help Sassafras welcome guitarist Ian Moore to the stage.

Don’t wait until the last moment to guarantee your spot at this memorable event. Jitterbug the night away with the High Sierra Swing Dance Club; you’ll find an intermediate swing lesson and open dance at El Charro Avita. The Fox Brewpub comes to the Monday blues rescue with karaoke hosted by J and M Productions.

Even if the weather doesn’t agree, there is a spring thaw in our midst. Carson City is picking up the pace, and there’s fun to be had all over. You’ll always find a great comedian at the Carson Nugget on Fridays: this week it’s funnyman Steve Bruner. Head to Sassafras for a fun time with Sacramento indy band, Poindexter. Tonight’s performance by the Brigham Young University's International Folk Dance Ensemble in the Community Center Theater is a special treat. Keep reading: there is so much more.

The Brewery Arts Center, Carson City’s premiere epicenter for the arts since 1975 will bring to Carson City Winter Wine, Spirits and All That Jazz, an evening of wine, beer and spirit tasting, featuring the very best in art, music and entertainment.

Another day off for the schoolkids and state workers and, you guessed it, it’s going to be rainy. If you need to get out for a little fun tonight, head to the Carson Cigar Company for their weekly Game Night. Dancing the night away with the High Sierra Swing Dance Club is always a good Monday option.

It may be a Monday, but there’s some sunshine, no rain, and Valentine’s is in the air. Treat your honey to a night on the town and an amazing performance by the Reno Philharmonic. For one night only, you’ll find the orchestra and special guest pianist, Conrad Tao, in the Bob Boldrick Theater. Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint welcomes the River Arkansaw, a bluesy-Americana band from Colorado. Pick your favorite love song to sing at the Fox Brewpub’s karaoke night.

• Social Work Legislative Day at the Nevada State Legislature


Want to be a lawyer for a day? At CHS, with Mock Trial, it is possible. Mock Trial is Law and Order set in a simulated trial environment in a real courthouse with a real judge. The Carson High School Mock Trial team will meet professional attorneys and students around the state to compete Feb. 17 in Reno.

Fortunate Strangers, a West Coast band featuring Scottish and Irish songs, will perform at Carson City’s Brewery Arts Center on Saturday, February 11, 2017 from 7:00 to 9:00pm. Featuring humorous and serious songs of love, loss, adventure, and yearning, their performance will provide a refreshing, pre-Valentine’s Day fare.

A hearty welcome to the members of the 2017 Legislature and their staff. You have a busy 120 days ahead of you, but don’t forget to enjoy what Carson City has to offer you while you’re here. I hope you remembered to bring an umbrella; this week will be rainy.

The new year keeps rolling along, and tonight we’ll hear from Mayor Bob Crowell what we can expect in the upcoming months. The State of the City address, "Carson City - A Community Working Together," will be presented in the Community Center’s Bob Boldrick Theater and is open to all. One thing we can expect is an influx of legislative staff, lobbyists, and lawmakers flooding Carson City. The next Legislative session begins in one week, so expect a little more traffic on the roads and our new downtown crosswalks to get a lot more use.

High Sierra Swing Dance Club presents its monthly dance party Jan. 28 at the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom, 449 W. King St., Carson City. At 6:30 p.m., Steve Dorman will teach a lesson in Intermediate West Coast Swing. Social dance is 7:30-10 p.m. Partners are not required. Lesson $7 for HSSDC and sister swing dance club members or $10 for non members; dance $7 for members of swing clubs and $10 for non members. Join the club that night, and the dance is free. It’s a winter wonderland in our neck of the woods, and probably a little messy to drive in. Thankfully, the Carson City and Douglas County School Districts have given you an extra two hours to get the kids to school. It’s not really expected to get above freezing, so be extra careful on what will likely be icy roads. This is the last scheduled week of the Arlington Square Ice Rink, so, if the weather allows, try to get in one last trip. Be safe out there, Carson City, spring is just around the corner.
