I Love Carson City's Weekend Event Summary: Feb. 21-22

Keep your fingers crossed that the storm front brings some precipitation our way. One place it’s seasonally appropriate is the Nevada Artist Association Gallery at the Brewery Arts Center. They will be hosting an artists’ reception for their new Winter Art Show Saturday evening.
Friday, Feb. 20: Things to do in Carson City

The Brewery Arts Center is hosting Mixed Company as part of its new Eclectic Electric series. The party is at Remedy’s; the blacklight body paint Mardi Gras Masquerade starts at 9pm, with the talented Lynzie Ruecker doing free body paint and music by DJ Justincredible.
It’s National Love Your Pet Day, so give your pooches and kitties some extra love.

Nevada Humane Society director Kevin Ryan to provide insight into new animal shelter
Submitted by editor on Sun, 02/15/2015 - 7:06pmIt’s been a long time coming, but the building of a new, state-of-the-art multi-million dollar animal shelter will become a reality within a year. Ground breaking is expected in March.
The new shelter will be funded through bonding resulting from the 1/8 cent sales tax increase that took place on October 1, 2015 with additional funds raised by CASI — Carson Animal Services Initiative — the organization pledging $200,000 to be used as a community “donation.”
Senator Square: CHS Leadership puts 'Love Thy Community' theme to work
Submitted by editor on Sun, 02/15/2015 - 6:34amHey Carson City, the Carson High Leadership class is organizing a clean-up day at Mills Park for Thursday, Feb. 26 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. This month, Carson High Leadership is focusing on Love Thy Community.
So every week, Carson High's Student Council will be encouraging their fellow students to clean up in several different ways: they will be making posters and flyers and putting them up around the school, it will be on the announcements, and every Thursday of Friday they will be passing out a reward when they see other students cleaning up.

The Annual Feast of Chocolate, hosted by AAUW, is Saturday afternoon at the Plaza Event Center. The Vagina Monologues and One Billion Rising are both raising awareness this V-Day weekend for women’s issues.

Nevada highway 342 closed over safety concerns, Comstock residents call for answers
Submitted by editor on Tue, 02/10/2015 - 4:19pmOn Sunday afternoon Feb. 8 the Nevada Department of Transportation closed a two-mile stretch of Nevada Highway 342 in lower Gold Hill because of subsidence occurring adjacent to the steeply excavated Lucerne Pit, prompting a call for answers from angry residents of Gold Hill and Silver City.
Sinking road forces NDOT to close portion of State Route 342 from Devils Gate to Gold Hill
Submitted by editor on Sun, 02/08/2015 - 6:40pmThe Nevada Department of Transportation said Sunday night that it has temporarily closed a portion of State Route 342 south of Gold Hill as a safety precaution following recent roadway cracking and sinking.
State Route 342 runs approximately from the Silver City area through Gold Hill to southern Virginia City, connecting U.S. 50 west of Dayton to Virginia City. An approximately two-mile portion of the road between Devils Gate and Gold Hill is closed to traffic (between mile markers 2 and 4).
5th Annual CHS Safe and Sober 5k Run/Walk a Success

The weather cleared up this morning and with just a bit of wind at race time, we couldn’t have asked for more perfect weather, maybe even a sunburn.

The Downtown Business Association’s Wine Walk, Artsy Fartsy’s Annual Jewelry Sale, Just Brew It’s Annual Thirsty Boy Home Brew Competition, and Family Fun Day at the Nevada State Museum are all hoping to lure you out of your home. Leave your ice skates at home though, the Arlington Square ice rink has closed for the season.

Local casinos, bars participate in 'Most Valuable Driver' Super Bowl Sunday Koozie campaign

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office in cooperation with Joining Forces and the Office of Traffic Safety have provided a limited number of water and cola Koozies to be given to those who choose to be designated drivers during the game.
They are designed in the shape of a football jersey and have been stamped with the MVD and Zero Fatalities Logo.

Speaking of sports, sign-ups are going on Saturday for Little League, AYSO, and the Sierra Nevada Football League. Spring is almost upon us without ever really giving us a decent taste of winter.

If you have some Legos handy, you may want to commemorate the 57th Anniversary of the little brick’s patent while celebrating National Have Fun at Work Day. It’s probably a safer bet than trying to celebrate National Kazoo Day at work.

For those of you who aren't the proud parents of tumblers, Carson City has plenty to keep you busy.
Maddie Bowman wins third straight gold medal at Aspen X Games
Submitted by editor on Thu, 01/22/2015 - 4:06amSouth Lake Tahoe's Maddie Bowman won her third straight gold medal Wednesday in the 2015 Women's Ski SuperPipe final at the X Games in Aspen.
She started off day one of the annual three day event with solid runs of 85.00, 78.00 and 85.66. The silver went to Ayana Onozuka (83.33) and a bronze to Brita Sigourney (78.66).
Bowman, who grew up on the slopes of Sierra-at-Tahoe, tied the late Sarah Burke's three straight X Game golds.

Although the weather is doing no favors for our water outlook, it is expected to be a beautiful week, so enjoy the sunshine while it’s here. Western Nevada College Baseball has a fundraiser tonight at the Gold Dust West Bowling Alley, and Wendy Robards Universal Dream Park Foundation is holding a meeting for all those interested in making the Dream Park a reality.

Their book includes an illustrated walking tour describing more than 30 buildings and sites including the Comstock National Historic District, now designated a National Historic Landmark.
Carson Tahoe Health and Sierra Surgery Hospital awarded Healthcare Quality Accreditation

The accreditation process is voluntary and includes a rigorous, unannounced on-site survey administered by CIHQ.

Annie, Jr. will be at the Bob Boldrick Theater for this weekend only, so make sure to catch the amazing kids from Youth Theater Carson City.
