Doug 'Mac the Naw' Busey: Winter fishing begins around the region

Hello fellow anglers, I am here to say that winter fishing has officially begun. Last Monday, my friend Jerry Dow from Carson City joined me for some ice fishing at Red Lake. We arrived about 10am to a cleared parking area behind the dam. There was approximately a foot of snow on the dam, which makes it much easier to pull your sled on.

Carson City Council, Navy League of the United States, to hold first meeting of the New Year

The Carson City Council of the United States Navy League will hold its first meeting of the New Year on Thursday, January 15, 2015 at the Gold Dust West Hotel and Casino, Carson City.

The Social hour begins at 5:30 p.m. and dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. Our speaker will be Commander Eugene Woodruff, Executive Officer of NAS Fallon. Commander Woodruff will be speaking about new developments in the Chinese Navy and Territorial actions taken by the Chinese in the past year.

Sponsorships and Tickets available for Winter, Wine, Spirits and All That Jazz

The Brewery Arts Center's annual fundraiser, Winter, Wine, Spirits, and All That Jazz, is kicking it up a notch this year with more than 25 distilleries and wineries, music, performances and more and is seeking community support through sponsorships. Tickets are available now for the Jan. 17, 2015 event for $40 in advance and $50 at the door. You can access tickets through the Brewery Arts website at www.breweryarts.org. Pre-purchase is recommended, as tickets are limited.

Carson City and Lake Tahoe area road report through Dec. 28

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of Dec. 22-28, 2014. Due to work in the median, there will be two-way traffic with flaggers on College Parkway between Ormsby Boulevard and College Drive from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 22.

Final Carson City boarding today and Sunday for Santa train at Nevada State Railroad Museum

The final weekend to take a train ride with Santa at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City has arrived. Today and Sunday the train will operate from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Advance tickets are on sale to allow priority boarding on a scheduled day. The historic and picturesque V&T Railway steam locomotive No. 25 pulls Santa Train, departing Carson City’s Wabuska Depot at the corner of Fairview Drive and Carson Street.

Minden woman arrested after allegedly ramming car into Northern Nevada Coin

UPDATE: A 74-year-old woman has been arrested and faces felony and misdemeanor charges after allegedly driving drunk and ramming her car into Northern Nevada Coin late Thursday afternoon in Minden, a Douglas County sheriff's sergeant said.

Cheryl Smith, 74, of Minden was booked into Douglas County Jail on suspicion of driving under the influence, assault with a deadly weapon and felony destruction of property. Bail was posted Friday morning at $31,509.

Carson High School student raises more than $1,000 for local cancer patients

Kimberly Parsons, a Carson High School senior and dedicated member of the Key Club, organized and implemented a fundraising campaign for area cancer patients as her senior project. In doing so, Parsons sold cancer awareness themed t-shirts, wristbands, and baked goods throughout the campaign, raising a total of $1,245.

Parsons presented a check to the Carson Tahoe Health Foundation in Carson City on Tuesday, generously donating proceeds to benefit area cancer patient support which is then distributed through the Carson Tahoe Cancer Center.

The Lompa Ranch has a long history in Carson City. It's a large ranch and fine open area for this (now) much more urbanized area, and the ranch extends all the north to the rear of the Gold Dust West on Highway 50.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s help in identifying an unknown man who is wanted for questioning in connection with a residential burglary and fraudulent use of a credit card occurring last week in the Carson area.

Carson City and Lake Tahoe area road report through Dec. 14

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of Dec. 8-14, 2014. On Thursday, Dec. 11, Carson Street will be reduced to one lane in each direction at the intersection with Spear Street from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Beginning the afternoon of Wednesday, Dec. 10, through the evening of Thursday, Dec. 11, there will be no parking on the west side of Curry Street between Telegraph Street and Proctor Street.

Carson City sheriff’s log: Weekend arrest report

Here is this weekend’s arrest report from Friday through Sunday morning. Carson City sheriff’s deputies made numerous felony and misdemeanor arrests over this 2014 Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Those arrested and facing criminal charges are innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

Symposium to highlight social media uses

The Carson City Visitors Bureau is hosting a Social Media Symposium for rural marketing and tourism organizations in the state.

“It’s an opportunity for the marketing community to come together,” said Kyle Horvath, social media director for the visitors bureau. “It’s a place people can feel comfortable to bounce ideas off each other and learn from others’ mistakes.”

The symposium will begin at 9 a.m. Dec. 5 and 6 at the Adams Hub for Innovation, 111 W. Proctor St.
