My daily list of activities might be called ‘things to do in Carson City,’ but I frequently include happenings from the surrounding valleys. Today, it’s the Thirsty Third Thursday wine walk in downtown Gardnerville that gets the spotlight. Dayton’s weekly Farmers Market can be found this afternoon in front of ‘Community Roots’ on Highway 50. It’s probably past patio weather, but there is plenty of room inside of Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar for all of tonight’s karaoke lovers.

The Nevada Highway Patrol has identified a South Lake Tahoe man as the pedestrian who died Sunday night in a vehicle accident on Highway 395 and Industrial Way in Gardnerville.

GARDNERVILLE, Nev. (Sept. 18, 2017) – As part of a continued effort to expand access to primary care clinics within Carson Valley, Carson Valley Medical Center -- your community hospital -- recently welcomed Jim Gocke, APRN, to its medical staff.

Gocke (pronounced Go-Key), brings 22 years of healthcare experience to Carson Valley - including 11 years in emergency medicine.

The Nevada Highway Patrol and Douglas County sheriff's deputies were called Sunday night to a fatal crash involving a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.

A Carson City jail inmate faces a felony battery charge after allegedly hitting another inmate in the face Friday evening, a Carson City sheriff's deputy said.

Today you’ll have Ev Musselman on stage at Living the Good Life to help erase your workweek worries.

Carson City and Carson Valley are featured in a new food-themed road trip itinerary through northern Nevada developed by TravelNevada and Reno Bites, the food event taking place Oct. 9-15 in Reno.

I’m going to suggest that you keep this weekend’s plans flexible. There’s only a chance of rain, but the chance of it showing up at the wrong time is always high. The very early morning is best spent watching the hot air balloons against the Reno skyline, but you’ll probably want a sweater for the pre-dawn chill. Head up the hill to Virginia City this weekend. Head to bed early tonight, the Great Reno Balloon races are best enjoyed by early risers. Not to be outdone, Virginia City has discovered that camels and emus are even more hilarious to race. You’ve got plenty to look forward to this weekend, but don’t discount today. Jimmy Mallett will sing you back to yesteryear at Living the Good Life. You’ll get your motor running at Battle Born Harley Davidson’s weekly bike night.

THURSDAY:

Six years ago, shots rang out and Carson City was thrust into the middle of a tragedy. Four people died in the IHOP shooting, three of them National Guard members. Today, they will be honored again during the annual Remembrance Run. If you are driving along Fairview, please give them some extra room. Wheeled Truck Wednesday at the Brewery Arts Center is a ‘weather permitting’ event, so keep your eye out for rain clouds.

The Slinkard Fire burning in the Topaz area since Tuesday has grown to more than 9,000 acres as of Sunday morning with 35 percent containment, according to Bureau of Land Management Incident Command. Highway 395 remains open.

Summer is holding on for dear life, and sending a miniature heat wave our way for this long weekend. For those of you not in Black Rock City, the Carson City region offers plenty of recreation and entertainment. Downtown will be hopping with the Farmers Market, monthly Wine Walk, and this season’s last outdoor concert at the Brewery Arts Center – and that’s just Saturday! Labor Day weekend usually signifies the end of summer. Sierra Front reports the fire, believed to have started by lightning on Tuesday, has burned an estimated 7,200 acres and is zero percent contained as of Friday afternoon.

Welcome to Wednesday, Carson City. The middle of the week may be known as hump day, but the Brewery Arts Center wants it to be something to look forward to. Wheeled Food Wednesday features family fun, community, and plenty of yummy eats from local food trucks. It’s generally thought that Carson City was named after Kit Carson, but that’s only partially true. The Carson River was named for the explorer, while Carson City was named for the river that runs through it. Learn more about this important high desert watershed at Dayton State Park.

Meet in the Target parking lot at the north end along Jacks Valley Road, to carpool or caravan to the Fay-Luther trailhead which is on Foothill Road, south of Genoa. Dirt trail with some elevation rise, about 4 miles roundtrip. Closed-toed shoes and water are required. Bring a friend and/or friendly dogs. Hats, sunscreen and walking sticks recommended.

Weekends fly by way too quickly. Enjoy the last few days of August with a ride to Virginia City aboard the Virginia and Truckee Steam Train. Take a peek inside the historic Wungnema House on the east side of Mills Park, courtesy of the Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation. If you are over 21, try your hand at BINGO in the Carson City Senior Center. Even if you aren’t a big winner, the Meals on Wheels program benefits from your afternoon of fun.

SUNDAY:

You’ll see some pretty interesting vehicles on the road these next few days, as travelers from all over head to Burning Man. If you aren’t off to the Playa yourself, there will be plenty of fun around town to keep you and your family occupied. The second annual Family Fun Day in Mills Park is your best bet for kids of all ages. This week’s free concert at Brewery Arts Center features the Dusty Green Bones. Don’t forget your dancing shoes; they’re sure to keep you on your feet.

A 40-year-old Carson City man was arrested early Friday morning for misdemeanor violation of a restraining order, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
