Firefighters make progress on Slinkard Fire near Topaz, Highway 395 remains open
The Slinkard Fire burning in the Topaz area since Tuesday has grown to more than 9,000 acres as of Sunday morning with 35 percent containment, according to Bureau of Land Management Incident Command. Highway 395 remains open.
There was minimal growth and activity over night due to calm winds. Sunday's fire priorities are to control the fire’s northwest spread that could threaten residential areas watershed, cultural and heritage sites. Structure defense resources remain in place in Holbrook Highlands and the area of Topaz Lake and Highway 395.
As of 8:51 a.m. Sunday, the lightning-caused fire has burned 9,051 acres. Personnel includes 531 firefighters, 11 crews, 4 helicopters, 54 engines, 2 dozers and 14 water tenders.
Unseasonably hot weather will continue through the holiday weekend with light easterly winds in the valleys and poor overnight humidity recovery for mid and upper slopes. Moisture will begin to work north Sunday with increasing chances of thunderstorms starting Monday through midweek.
California and Nevada Highway Patrol will be on Highway 395 monitoring the situation. The highway is subject to closure if conditions change. Fire command urges people to exercise extreme caution as firefighters may be working from the roadway. Motorists traveling on Highway 395 are reminded there is large amounts of fire traffic and this is a holiday weekend. Please drive with caution.
A temporary flight restriction has been put in place over the fire.
Management of the fire has transition to Mike Wakoski’s So Cal Incident Command Team 3. Cooperators on the incident include Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, East Fork Fire, Antelope Valley Fire. Incident Command Post is located at the Douglas County Fairgrounds in Gardnerville.
