UPDATE: There's a star party late Monday night into Tuesday morning hosted by Carson City Parks and Recreation and Open Space. For summer’s most visible meteor showers, join the Carson City Parks, Rec and Open Space Department at Western Nevada College’s Jack C. Davis Observatory for some late night, educational fun. No pre-registration necessary. Please wear close-toed shoes and bring water for night hiking from the Observatory. Head lamps and flashlights are allowed. This upcoming Monday is the Aquariids Viewing Party starting at 12:00 a.m. Tuesday (technically Monday night).

Heading into Monday, July 29, 2019 and we're wondering how the month went by so quickly. Again we're looking at a fairly typical end of July day weather wise, with sunny skies and a high around 94. On tap around Carson City are athletic, art and speaking events, a life guard camp, a computer coding camp, line dancing lessons and more. Enjoy.

Mormon Station is located in the heart of the Genoa National Historic District, which encompasses over 25 structures and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Join a Park Ranger for a guided walking tour throughout a portion of the historic district. During the approximately one-mile roundtrip walk, we will discuss the significance of the structures located along the route.

Heading into Wednesday, July 17, 2019 and we're looking at another sunshine-filled day full of activities including Trails 4 Tails at Riverview Park, an open house at Carson City's Foreman-Roberts House Museum, Wheeled Food Wednesday at the Brewery Arts Center with a showing of "Monster's University" to follow and more. Tomorrow, Thursday July 11, the first of the summer artist series — free to the public — will feature artists Claire Scully and Russ Connell from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Each artist will be presenting for 45 minutes. The series will be held in the Brick (the Community Development Building) at 108 Proctor Street in Carson City

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City area to help the next three days breeze by. There's a morning Muscle Powered walk, plus the Nevada State Museum will host 2 behind the scenes tours in natural history and anthropology. Plus, the fourth annual Carson City Off-Road kicks off its three-day event with a Capital 15 Fun Ride and Free Clunker Crit Ride. Entry to the event is free to the public and draws thousands of visitors annually. Proceeds from new programming will benefit local non-profit, Eagle Valley Children's Home.

Once again, Spooner Lake State park offers outdoor sport enthusiasts a system of meandering cross-country ski trails that wind through dense forest, across an open meadow and along the banks of Spooner Lake.

This trail system is free to the public and made possible by a partnership between Nevada State Parks and Nevada Nordic, a non-profit group based in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Sierra Lutheran will host the inaugural "Christ IS Christmas" Craft Fair the weekend of Nov. 3-4. The fair will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday in the Norm Brauer Gymnasium.

Northern Nevada science and history lecturer Mike Thomas will discuss the USS Panay and the moon during October presentations scheduled for Western Nevada College’s Jack C. Davis Observatory.

GARDNERVILLE, Nev. — It wouldn't be fall in the Carson Valley without the annual Scarecrow and Harvest Festival hosted by Main Street Gardens and East Fork Gallery. Or the Annual Slaughterhouse Lane Coffin and Stretcher Races.

This year Main Street Gardnerville has combined all these events into one big festival called Main Street Fall Fest, with more music, activities, demonstrations and vendors at Heritage Park on Saturday, Oct. 6 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Northern Nevada lecturer Mike Thomas will resume his history and science lectures at Jack C. Davis Observatory this week. Thomas is planning to lecture about “Bad History” on Friday, Sept. 7 and “Coincidence” on Saturday, Sept. 8.

His “Bad History” presentation will focus on “factual” history that has proven to be false.

Thomas’ lecture on “Coincidence” will spotlight amazing situations in science and whether they are happenstance or destined to take place.

As is the case throughout the rest of the year, Jack C. Davis Observatory is the place to be on Saturday nights.

Let’s give this outdoors thing another try. Yesterday’s Jazz and beyond performances were moved indoors at the Brewery Arts Center when the rain hit, but I have more hope for today’s skies. Look for The Other Brothers Band this evening in the Comma Coffee Courtyard. Carson City BMX hosts practice and racing at the track in the Livermore Sports Complex; all ages are invited to participate, and one day memberships are available for those who’d like to try it out.
