Carson City Rifle and Pistol Range open Sundays only for now
Due to verified reports involving the likelihood of stray bullets entering into populated areas originating from the discharge of firearms at the Carson City Rifle and Pistol Range, a temporary operating schedule was implemented along with the increased presence of Range Safety Officers made available by the Carson Rifle and Pistol Club, the city’s non-profit partner for the operation of the range.
Concurrently, the city held a public informational meeting to inform the community regarding safety concerns and also retained a third party technical expert to evaluate the facility for safety and to provide any recommendations.
A Range Evaluation Report prepared by the Tactical Services Group was received by the City and is available to the public on the city’s website at carson.org.
Completion of a second safety evaluation to be performed by the National Rifle Association (NRA) Range Technical Team is expected in the coming weeks.
The city’s funding partner, the Nevada Department of Wildlife, has also requested an evaluation to be performed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation.
At its January 17, 2019 meeting, the Carson City Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to create a task force to review all completed safety evaluation reports, to develop a funding and implementation plan to address any recommended safety repairs or improvements, and to provide operational suggestions to ensure safety.
The task force is currently being established, with membership to be comprised of key stakeholders and members of the community at-large.
As part of the city’s dual goal of assessing long-term solutions to keep the range open as a recreational facility for the public and also to ensure the safety of the community, effective immediately the range will be open Sundays only from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. until further notice.
The Range will continue to be free to the public and available on a first-come, first-served basis. The city sincerely regrets the inconvenience created by this temporary schedule, and is appreciative of the understanding from responsible gun owners who recognize the city’s obligation to the public in promptly and diligently addressing safety concerns.
The city also appreciates the efforts of the Carson Rifle and Pistol Club, and the public’s cooperation in ensuring the safety of the range.
The Carson City Rifle and Pistol Range is owned by Carson City and operated by the Carson Rifle and Pistol Club, a non-profit organization, through a use agreement. The mission of Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space is to provide exceptional parks, open space, and diverse recreational opportunities to enhance the quality of life in Carson City, while preserving our natural resources for future generations.
