Carson City Parks Foundation holds first 2019 Open House at historic Wungnema House in Mills Park
Sunday should be a great day to be out and about, so come to the Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation’s open house at the Wungnema House, Sunday afternoon from 2-5 p.m. There is no admission fee, and all are welcome.
The Wungnema House is the small stone house located on the east side of Mills Park across from Carson High. It was built by a family of skilled Hopi stonemasons shortly after WWII and served as the family’s home until the early 1970s.
Stop by and learn about this remarkable family of Hopi stonemasons; how they came to live in Carson City; their heritage; their work, and continuing legacy. The family was responsible not only for this house, but many other distinctive homes and structures in and around the Carson City area, including a ranch in Washoe Valley and at least one church at Lake Tahoe.
After the family moved from the house in the early 1970s, the Wungnema House fell into disrepair and became subject to on-going vandalism until it was finally rescued by Carson City in the late 1990s, at which time, with a grant from the National Park Service, the city was able to restore the house to serve as a meeting place for small community groups and organizations.
