Carson City maestro David Bugli to speak at Monday's Democratic luncheon
Monday's Democratic luncheon will feature a presentation by David Bugli, conductor of the Carson City Symphony and leader of the Mile High Jazz Band, which he founded in 1998. He is also Secretary and past President of the Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation and Secretary of the Carson City Historical Society.
David was born in New York City in 1950 and grew up in Bedford, New York. He began studying classical piano at age seven, and in the sixth grade he took up cornet and eventually gravitated to the tuba and trombone. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in music education from Ithaca College, where he studied composition for four years with Czech composer and conductor Karel Husa, winner of the 1969 Pulitzer Prize for Music.
From 1972 to 1977, David taught public school music in Massachusetts and Vermont, during which time he also served in various capacities as a church organist and choir director. He went on to earn a Master of Music degree from the University of Massachusetts, and has participated in American Symphony Orchestra League conductor workshops in San Francisco and St. Louis. In addition to conducting, he plays classical and jazz piano, tuba, and trombone, and composes and arranges music.
For the Carson City Symphony, which he founded in 1984, David arranges music that features guest artists at the Symphony's annual Holiday Treat and Pops Party concerts. He organized the annual Reno TubaChristmas event and led the annual Capitol Tree Lighting on the steps of the Nevada capitol building, featuring performances by the two-dozen-player Holiday Brass Ensemble as well as a group of about two hundred elementary school singers. He has played tuba in the Zephyrus Brass Quintet, the Carson Valley Pops Orchestra, and Elko's Ruby Mountain Symphony.
David taught class piano at Western Nevada College from 2011 to 2015. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic he's hosted numerous Zoom meetings and done a lot of video editing with a focus on projects that engage remotely with musicians from the Reno area, other parts of the United States, and overseas. In the process he's added video editing to his lengthy list of presentation skills. His ongoing contributions to Norther Nevada community life were recognized by the 2007 Governor's Award for Distinguished Service to the Arts.
Sponsored by the Democratic Men's Committee, this event is scheduled for noon on Monday, October 18th. David will be presenting via Zoom. Participants are invited to join the conversation through Zoom or in person at Democratic HQ.
