Fernley man gets up to 24 years in prison after pleading guilty to fracturing infant's skull

The Lyon County District Attorney’s Office announced that Russell Edward Frietze, 24, of Fernley, Nev., was sentenced on March 9, 2015, to 76-192 months in Nevada State Prison for child abuse causing substantial bodily harm and 24-96 months in Nevada State Prison for child abuse.

Western Nevada College to Graduate More than 500 at ceremony Monday in Carson City

Western Nevada College has announced that it will graduate 515 students for the 2014-15 academic year. The 2015 commencement ceremony will take place on Monday, May 18, 11 a.m. at the Marv Teixieira Pavilion in Mills Park, in Carson City.

The class of 2015 will receive 568 degrees and certificates.

NHP identifies victims in Saturday rollover Highway 50 near Silver Springs

The Nevada Highway Patrol has identified the two 19-year-old men who died in a single vehicle rollover crash that happened Saturday afternoon on Highway 50 near Silver Springs. A third man remains in the hospital with serious injuries.

WNC, school district partners make ‘Jump Start ‘ early college program a success

Jump Start, a collaborative effort between Western Nevada College and five Nevada school districts to offer early college opportunities, is a success. That is the word from high schools in the region as its first year winds down.

From the grades being earned to the opportunities being afforded, high school juniors and seniors from 11 high schools are about to finish the first year of the Jump Start partnership by succeeding at a high rate.

WNC Softball: Wildcats level home field with sweep against Colorado Northwestern

After two weekends on the road against two of the best teams in the nation, the Western Nevada College softball team showed that it knows how to win when the playing field levels. WNC completed a four-game Scenic West Athletic Conference softball sweep of Colorado Northwestern on Saturday at Edmonds Sports Complex in Carson City.

The Wildcats backed the six-hit pitching of Kristina George by lining a homer and five doubles in a 6-3 opening-game victory, then Gabriella Canibeyaz delivered two hits and two RBI in a 7-3 second-game victory.

At least four identified in vehicle vandalism spree in Dayton, Silver Springs and Fernley

During the nights of Wednesday and Thursday approximately 40 incidents of vehicle vandalism occurred in the communities of Dayton, Silver Springs and Fernley, according to Lyon County Sheriff's Office. One adult male and three juveniles have been identified in connection with all of these.

NHP: Silver Springs woman dies in head-on crash south of Fernley

A 19-year-old Silver Springs woman died in a head-on crash Sunday on Highway 50A south of Fernley, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol. Three others were also injured.

NHP confirms Isis Aline Fetty died after a Saturn Sedan crossed over the center line and struck the Mercedes she was driving. The accident happened around noon Sunday, near Lyon County mile marker 11 approximately 1 mile south of the Fernley High School.

Carson City deputies make arrests for warrants, reckless driving and domestic battery

A 28-year-old Carson City man was arrested Monday, 1:03 p.m. in the 3200 block of Imperial Way on a felony fugitive from justice warrant, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
Arrested was Joshua Jason Moore. The warrant was issued out of Kansas where he will be extradited.

Carson City sheriff's arrest log: Man jailed on felony after allegedly choking girlfriend

A 37-year-old Carson City man was arrested Wednesday in the 3500 block of Emerson Drive on felony suspicion of domestic battery with strangulation, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

In custody is John Joseph Burritt. He also faces two counts of violation of probation, both misdemeanors. His total bail amount is $26,000. According to the arrest report, officers were called to the Emerson Drive address at 11:17 p.m. on a 911 hang up call.

WNC names 329 students to Fall Dean’s List

Western Nevada College has named 329 students to the Fall 2014 Dean’s List. For consideration to WNC’s Dean’s List, students must complete at least 12 units during the semester and accumulate a grade point average of 3.50 or higher.

For the first time, the Dean’s List includes students from WNC’s new Jump Start College, which offers high-achieving juniors and seniors from eight high schools in the region the opportunity to earn up to 48 college credits before graduating.

Riverside, Illinois man Yeats E. Brannik dies in rollover accident on Interstate 80 near Fernley

An 18-year-old Riverside, Illinois man, Yeats E. Brannik, died Saturday in a single vehicle crash on Interstate 80 in Lyon County two miles east of Fernley, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol. Three other occupants, all Illinois residents, including a 17-year-old female were injured in the rollover crash in which two were ejected.

According to Trooper Dave Gibson approximately 5:10 am, NHP officers were dispatched to a single vehicle rollover accident that occurred on Interstate 80 at mile post 50 in Lyon County approximately 2 miles east of Fernley.

PUCN sets consumer session on AT&T service application for Lyon County

Dayton, Nev. – The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada has scheduled a consumer session for Wednesday, Jan. 7, to hear public comment regarding AT&T’s application for relief as a designated provider of last resort in its Lyon County service territory.

A telecommunications provider of last resort (POLR) is required to provide basic network service and business line service to any eligible person requesting to receive telephone service in a particular service area.

Weather Service: Snow likely by Christmas for Carson City, Lake Tahoe

It is shaping up to be a white Christmas in Northern Nevada and the Sierra. A strong cold front will move through Lake Tahoe and Carson City on Wednesday likely bringing wind, rain and snow to the region by Christmas morning, according to the National Weather Service. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for the Sierra and much of Western Nevada.

NHP: Wadsworth driver, passenger charged In fatal Lyon County hit and run

Two Wadsworth women have been charged in the Nov. 18 hit and run crash that killed a woman who was a pedestrian walking along the road on State Route 427 in Lyon County, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Liann Christy, 21, has been charged with felony DUI causing death and leaving the scene of an accident causing death. Katrina E. Paddy, 22, has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing death, said NHP Trooper Dave Gibson on Monday.

Senator Square: Carson High ski team hosts Warren Miller film 'No Turning Back' Dec. 12

The CHS Ski Team will be hosting the latest Warren Miller Film, “No Turning Back” on Dec. 12, 7 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center. Tickets can be purchased from any ski team member or from their advisor Adrienne Schneider.

Tickets are $8 for students and $12 for adults. They are also selling raffle tickets in conjunction with the movie. A multiple of prizes are available that evening at the showing of the film. Raffle tickets cost $1 each or 25 tickets for $20. Doors open at 6 PM.

Senator Square: CHS Marching Band wins Nevada Day Battle of the Bands

The CHS Marching Band competed last weekend in the Nevada Day Battle of the Bands held at Spanish Springs High School. The band finished first in their division beating out rivals Douglas High School.

They received the caption for "Outstanding Music." This award marks the first time in nine years that the marching band took home a first place trophy in a field show competition. Way to Go Big Blue Thunder!
