Weather Service: Snow likely by Christmas for Carson City, Lake Tahoe
It is shaping up to be a white Christmas in Northern Nevada and the Sierra. A strong cold front will move through Lake Tahoe and Carson City on Wednesday likely bringing wind, rain and snow to the region by Christmas morning, according to the National Weather Service. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for the Sierra and much of Western Nevada.
Winds will be the initial impact with gusts of 40 to 60 mph between late morning and early evening, mainly for the Highway 395 corridor south of Susanville and in western Nevada south of Gerlach, according to the weather service.
This will lead to travel restrictions for high profile vehicles along I-580 and Highway 395. Blowing dust may also impact travel on I-80 from Fernley eastward, Highway 50 east of Carson City and US-95 in Churchill and Mineral counties.
Snow will start for northeast California Wednesday afternoon, with snow and lower elevation rain starting in western Nevada by early evening. Snow levels will quickly drop to all valley floors as the cold front arrives.
A period of heavy snow is expected in the Sierra from mid afternoon through early evening tomorrow, with whiteout conditions possible over the passes. Snow will end early Christmas morning as the front moves into eastern and southern Nevada. The graphic above shows the potential snow accumulations.
To summarize, the weather service expects gusty winds Wednesday followed by snow as a strong cold front moves through eastern California and western Nevada. For Carson City, rain and snow is likely through Wednesday night, with sunny skies on Christmas morning.
Snowfall totals are currently forecast to be 6-12 inches over the Sierra passes, 3-6 inches around Lake Tahoe (at lake level), and 1 to 3 inches for the valley floors of northeast California and western Nevada.
