Native American tradition and Washoe heritage are honored and recognized this Nevada Day weekend with the 32nd annual La Ka Lel Be Pow Wow at the Washoe Colony in Carson City.

Comstock Mining Inc. CEO Corrado De Gasperis will speak on “Comstock Bonanzas and an Overview of the Global Gold Industry on Thursday, Oct. 29 at the Thursday Night Gold Hill Lecture Series. The series features local historians and performers to present the topic of their choice.

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of Oct. 26 through Nov. 1, 2015. Due to Nevada Day events including a parade, Carson Street will be closed on Saturday, Oct. 31, from approximately 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Numerous side streets connected to Carson Street will be impacted as well. Detours will be signed.

Steve Hale returns to present a Chautauqua performance of Comstock Characters at the next Thursday night lecture at the Gold Hill Hotel, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22 at the hotel, 1540 Main St., Gold Hill. Dinner begins at 6 p.m.

This week's It's Your City with host Cortney Bloomer features guest Linda Belgray of Friends of the Carson City Library. They discuss the international Film Weekend coming up in February and the Movie Masquerade Ball this Saturday, Oct. 24, 7 p.m. at Silver Oak Golf and Event Center to raise funds for the film festival.

Sierra Nevada Forums, Partnership Carson City and Nevada Juvenile Justice will host a lecture Thursday in Carson City on the brain/body connection by a consultant for the Navy SEALS and the International Olympic Committee.

John Underwood, director and founder of Pure Performance, is the Human Performance Consultant for the U.S. Navy SEALS, and presented at numerous military bases.

There will be two events hosted by Sassafras on Oct. 23 and 25, to provide an opportunity to help raise money for Nichole Millim. The events will feature live music, raffle drawings, drinks and dinner specials. A percentage of the restaurant’s proceeds for the two evenings will also be donated to Nic’s fundraiser account.

Carson Tahoe Health is excited to present its third annual Spooktacular party, a family-oriented Halloween celebration open to the community. The free event takes place on October 29 from 3:30 P.M. to 5:30 P.M. in the north parking lot at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center.

Writers, readers and performers from all around the country will appear at South Lake Tahoe this weekend for WordWave, a three-day festival held on the grounds of Valhalla at the Tallac Historic Site.

This literary mash-up features oral storytelling, theater performances and free readings, panels on craft, yoga, and a novel writing camp for kids.

The Nevada Division of Insurance is excited to announce the launch of its Fall Health Insurance Awareness campaign. The month of October is a good time to begin thinking about a 2016 health insurance policy.

Open Enrollment is just around the corner starting Nov. 1 and running through Jan. 31, 2016. That is why the Division of Insurance is officially kicking off a pre-enrollment campaign to turn consumers into insurance experts before Open Enrollment begins.

Carrying on its trailblazing tradition, Nevada Magazine could not be fenced in last Friday at the Nevada Press Association awards banquet as it claimed five first-place awards including the coveted General Excellence award, the top prize in the magazine category.

It’s that time of year again, when sponsors are sought to support the Celebrity Chef and Harvest Dinner, hosted by Cafe at Adele’s in Carson City and now in its sixth year.

A major donor, (composed of one donor or many) for the amount of $5,000 is still needed. The $5,000 match is collected through donations both large and small, by dinner patrons.

James Winn, professor at the University of Nevada, Reno and RCO principal pianist, performs his own Piano Concerto, written for the RCO over twenty years ago, as well as the Burleske by the young Richard Strauss. Maestro Theodore Kuchar also leads the Orchestra in a symphony by Mozart made famous in the film Amadeus, as well as the delightful “Classical” Symphony by Prokofiev.

Bethlehem Lutheran Church and School in Carson City will host an Oktoberfest fundraiser Oct. 17, from 5 to 10 p.m. at Firkin & Fox, 310 South Carson Street. The event features live entertainment and all the Oktoberfest favorite food and refreshments. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at the door or by email, blscptl@hotmail.com. The fundraiser is for the parent-teacher association.

This week's It's Your City with Cortney Bloomer features Carson City Ward 1 Supervisor Karen Abowd. The two discuss the Western Nevada Safe Routes to School Program, which delivered books as part of the Ride for Reading event last week at area schools.

Here is this week’s Carson City area road report for the week of Oct. 5-11, 2015. The Nevada Department of Transportation will continue bridge maintenance on the Carson City Freeway (I-580) with nightly lane closures and intermittent on and off ramp closures during weeknights from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The Carson City Symphony, directed by David Bugli, will open its 32nd season on Sunday, October 18, 2015, 4:00 p.m., with a concert, "Shifting Landscapes," at the Carson City Community Center's Bob Boldrick Theater, 851 E. William Street in Carson City. The concert features guest trumpet soloist Paul Lenz.

The Nevada State Prison in Carson City is the latest addition to the National Register of Historic Places, with its listing Friday by the National Park Service. The National Register is the nation’s official list of properties worthy of preservation.

Basque language, food, music and play for the whole family are all part of a very special event at the Nevada State Museum, Carson City from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 10.

The monthly Family Fun Saturdays series gets kids involved in many aspects of the museum, from Nevada history to cultural and nature studies. October’s event features Xabier Irujo, co-director at the Center for Basque Studies at UNR, his five young children and several special guests who will entertain and share culture and heritage.

In the tradition of Winterail, Silver Rail 2015 is an informal gathering of railroad photographers, artists, writers, historians and preservationists. The event will be Oct. 3 at the Brewery Arts Center and will feature a full day of multimedia presentations of documentary and creative railroad photography and fellowship.

Urban Roots is holding their annual fundraiser on Sunday, Oct. 4. The event takes place from 4:30 to 8:30pm in the FarmHouse at Urban Roots, 3001 W. Fourth St., in Reno. This special event features local food, drinks, art, and presentations to showcase the sustainability of garden education in northern Nevada.

Great Basin Geeks is pleased to announce that Great Basin Geek Con, Northern Nevada’s largest locally focused pop culture convention, will be held Oct. 17-18, 2015, at Reno Town Mall, 4001 S Virginia St, Reno.

“The folks at Reno Town Mall and Buy Nevada First share our goal of making the Great Basin a great place to be a geek. We want to show just how amazing the people in northern Nevada really are, especially the geeks,” said Michael Ford, Great Basin Geek Con Chairman.

Little Shop of Horrors will be presented by Carson City Classic Cinema Club on Tuesday, Oct. 6. This 1960 comedic horror film was directed by the quirky Roger Corman, and features a young Jack Nicholson.

The film will be shown in the Assembly Room at Red's Old 395 Grill, 1055 S. Carson Street. Trivia and film discussion begin at 6:30pm, and the film at 7:00pm.

As Street Vibrations rolls between Reno and Virginia City into the weekend, Carson City Harley-Davidson will host its 15th annual BikeFest celebration beginning Thursday with a fireworks show Friday night, bands, and a concert by WAR on Saturday night.
