5,000 Lahontan cutthroat trout to be placed in Lake Tahoe this weekend

For the first time ever, the Lahontan National Fish Hatchery will release 5,000 large Pilot Peak Lahontan cutthroat trout into their home waters at Lake Tahoe this Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Over three days, the 12 to 14-inch sized trout will be placed in the water, and the public is invited to two of those historic, interpretive stocking events during the Fall Fish Festival at Taylor Creek.

Fall is in the air and that signifies the end of the Carson Farmers Market. It has been a busy year for us with new vendors and more customers. Although we are all sad to see another season come to an end, we are relieved to have another successful year behind us and a few months of rest.

Carson City says goodbye to the Farmer’s Market, welcomes in Fall

Today was the last day of the Carson City Farmers Market which has been going strong since Spring every Saturday. Carsonites gathered at the market for the last chance at locally grown fruits and veggies, delicious cheeses and meats, homemade crafts and all manner of trinkets and activities.

Fishing Report: Water level dropping in some spots, last chances to fish; watch out for algae blooms

Hello fellow anglers. Fall is officially upon us and things are changing in our local area.

Lakes are opening for Public Lands Day. Even if you are not an angler and just enjoy the great outdoors, then September 28th is a day to get out and enjoy Public Lands Day. This day all national and state parks in the United States are free to all. This will include entrance, parking, camping and boating on this day (where applicable). The next Public Lands Day will be November 11th of this year.

'Fall Tot Trot' teaches children to love the outdoors with Carson River scavenger hunt

Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space will host a “Fall Tot Trot” Sunday, October 5 beginning at 10 a.m. at Riverview Park.

This interpretive hike includes a scavenger hunt to learn about the Carson River habitat, and will help foster a love of exploring the outdoors!

Lake Tahoe watercraft inspection stations to close for the season

This week marks the last full week of operations for watercraft inspection stations at Lake Tahoe as we transition into Fall. As of Oct. 1, watercraft inspection operations will move from roadside inspection stations and occur at Cave Rock and Lake Forest launch ramps for the winter season.

Carson City arrests: Man allegedly steals and pawns laptop, games from friend's game room

A man was arrested Tuesday for suspicion of felony grand larceny, obtaining money under false pretenses and misdemeanor violation of a suspended sentence after allegedly breaking into a game room of a residence, stealing electronics and selling them, a Carson City sheriff's deputy report said.

Austin Bantam Society to celebrate 51st annual meeting with Carson City car show

Fire and Fuels Team to begin Lake Tahoe Basin fall prescribed fire program

The Lake Tahoe Basin Fall Prescribed Fire Program may begin as early as Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2019, under the management of the Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team, which includes local, state and federal fire and land management agencies.

Forest Service seeks input for Winter Travel Management at Lake Tahoe

The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit has released the Proposed Action for the Winter Recreation and Over Snow Vehicle Travel Management Project. The Proposed Action was developed based on Forest Service criteria and feedback received from stakeholders during the Forest Plan Revision process, open house meetings and winter recreation collaborative meetings that occurred between 2011 and 2016.

JoAnne Skelly column: Plants now changing as we head into fall

Writing this on Wednesday, Sept. 18, the morning temperature reading was 37 degrees and Tuesday it was 35 degrees. If the cold nights didn’t alert me that fall is near, my flowers and trees would. Leaves are turning yellow on the neighborhood poplars and ash trees. Some maples are already changing to autumn oranges and reds.

The last day of summer around the capital city region will bring mostly sunny skies, with afternoon breezes and a cool down later Sunday evening into Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Homecoming, first seen in 1911 at the University of Missouri, is a wonderful event celebrated throughout the US at high schools and colleges. Homecoming is more than just a football game, it encompasses multiple celebratory events such as bonfires, tailgate parties, dances, and the crowning of a King and Queen. Fall is in the air in Carson City, and a change in the weather was one more reason for kids and adults alike to get out and celebrate this year’s Disney themed Happiest Homecoming on Earth.

Carson City area weather: Potential for first overnight frost, warming trend through weekend

It may not feel like frost is in the air after a day of sunshine and a few clouds around the Carson City region, however the National Weather Service advises there's a potential for frosty conditions late Thursday night into early Friday morning.
