VC Outhouse races, Relay for Life, golf tournament, Oktoberfest and more: Carson City region in store for eventful weekend

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the 30th annual Outhouse Races in Virginia City, American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event in Carson City, Fright Night at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, Oktoberfest at the Casino Fandango, the 26th annual 'Making a Difference' Golf Tournament and much more!

Friday, October 4
Check out the stars with a Carson City Library premiere card (all day). A premiere card from the Carson City Library is all families need to check out a lunar telescope for two weeks of space-gazing. The premiere card is free and works like a regular library card, with extra access to special items such as the NASA Explorer Backpacks now being offered by the Carson City Library. To get the card, just visit the library at 900 N. Roop St. and fill out an application. You must be 14 years of age or older to qualify. Bring valid photo identification, have a standard library card in good standing for 90 days and, for 14- to 17-year-olds, a parent or guardian’s signature.

26th annual 'Making a Difference' Golf Tournament. 9 a.m. at Dayton Valley Golf Club. The seasons are changing and fall is considered as one the most beautiful seasons of all. What better way to leave summer and embrace the change than by pulling out the clubs and shoes and taking a few swings at our 26th annual "Making a Difference" Golf Tournament. The Chamber works hard to encourage the economic well being of our community as well as continuing to make a difference in our communities through volunteerism, donations, our veterans dinner, Oodles of Noodles, and more.

Horse guided workshops offered in Carson Valley designed for these with memory loss. 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 2869 Esaw Rd. Connected Horse, a nonprofit organization working with local barns and therapeutic equine centers, is excited to expand its powerful evidence based workshops with horses to benefit people with early stage dementia and their care partners. There are openings for participants in evidenced based, equine guided workshops exploring how activities with horses benefit people with dementia along with their care partners.

150th V and T Anniversary Train. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Eastgate Depot, 4650 Eastgate Sliding Rd. Come celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Virginia &Truckee Railway with an on-board performance and re-enactment of William Sharon, famous for his influence on the origination of the railroad in 1869. Coin Press demonstrations at the Nevada State Museum. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 600 N. Carson Street. Visitors to the Nevada State Museum can watch the museum’s historic Coin Press No. 1 carry on a mission it started nearly 150 years ago in the very same building. The venerable press which churned out millions of dollars in silver and gold coins during stints at U.S. Mints in Carson City, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Denver between 1870 and 1964. The press demonstrations will take place the last Friday of the month with two-person teams of volunteers not only working the press but sharing its history with museum visitors.

Experience Virtual Reality at the Carson City Library. 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. at 900 N. Roop Street. Join us to experience Virtual Reality! Using the latest technology, Virtual Reality allows you to experience new places and situations in a computer simulated world. Discover what it’s like to see dinosaurs up close, view art from around the world in a single museum, or blast alien ships in a virtual world. Must be at least 13 years or older to participate. Douglas County Sheriff's Office host annual Fright Night. 3 to 5:30 p.m. for smaller kids and 6 to 9 p.m. for bigger kids. The Fright Night takes place at the Douglas County Fairgrounds located off Pinenut Road in Gardnerville.

Hauntober returns to Virginia City. Throughout the month of October, Virginia City will be hosting several events to shine light on its spooky past. Virginia City boasts its notoriety of being one of the three most haunted towns in the United States, along with Savannah and Charleston. Otherworldly “haunts” exist during Halloween as Virginia City celebrates its ghostly history and offers a month of ghost experiences. Want to have your own paranormal experience? See the places and feel the chill with Bats in the Belfry Ghost Tours, or jump on board the V & T Railroad Halloween train for a spooky trip.

Ronald McDonald House Northern Nevada Red Shoe Gala. 6 p.m. at the Atlantis Resort in Reno. Please join us for the Ronald McDonald House Northern Nevada Red Shoe Gala on October 4, 2019 at the Atlantis Resort in Reno. The evening includes dinner, silent and live auction, and a night filled with superhero fun! All proceeds directly benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities Northern Nevada, which creates and supports programs that directly improve the health, education, and well-being of children and families.

Creepy Dolls Make and Take in Virginia City. 6 to 9 p.m. at St. Mary’s Art Center, 55 North R Street. Get into the Halloween spirit with a creepy dolls make and take on Oct. 4. All supplies will be provided, including dolls and oddities.

Storey County Senior Center Lasagna Cook Off. 6 to 9 p.m. at 100 Mill St. The Storey County Senior Center Annual Lasagna Cook-off and Silent Auction is set for Friday, October 4 at 6 p.m. Head down to the center on the corner of Mill and North E street for a great Lasagna dinner and silent auction. Tickets are $10 each and available at the Senior Center during business hours.

Open Mic Night at A to Zen Gift Shop. 6 to 9 p.m. at 1803 N. Carson Street. Open Mic Night is held at A to Zen Gift Shop on the Zen Den Stage. All talents, creative projects welcome. Come practice being on stage. There will be music, comedy, poetry, magic, and more. All ages and skill levels welcome. Open Mic Night happens every Friday from 6-9 pm. Live music at Glen Eagles Restaurant. 6:30 to 9 p.m. at 3700 N. Carson St. Enjoy live music that is sure to make you get up and dance every Wednesday through Saturday starting at 6:30 to 9:00ish.

CHS Theater Aims High: 'Peter and the Starcatcher' opens at Community Center. 7 p.m. at 851 E. William Street. See the backstory of Peter Pan and how he learned to fly as Carson High School Theatre Arts presents "Peter and the Starcatcher," opening this Friday at the Bob Boldrick Theater in the Carson City Community Center. This hilarious play, written by Rick Elice, and based on a book by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, is the prequel to the beloved story of "Peter Pan." Learn how Peter and Captain Hook became enemies, who taught Peter to fly, and the creation of the story everyone loves.

Evening of improv comedy at the Brewery Arts Center. 7 to 9 p.m. at 449 W. King Street. Join us for an evening of improv comedy where you never know what to expect, except a good time! Suggested donation of $5.00 at the door.

Dongato Latin Band in concert at the CVIC Hall. 7 to 9:30 p.m. at 1602 Esmeralda Ave. in Minden. The Carson Valley Arts Council opens its 2019-2020 Concert Series with DonGato Latin Band. DGLB plays Sophisticated Latin Music blended with, Cuban, Salsa and Smooth Latin Jazz with a dash of a tropical feel, including a tribute to the great Cuban Buena Vista Social Club plus American standards classics with a Latin beat.

Carson Comedy Club at the Carson Nugget. 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at 507 N. Carson Street. Live Comedy every Friday and Saturday night at the Carson Nugget! Doors open at 7:15 p.m. Purchase tickets at the Winner's Club or online.

Carson City Kiwanis is serving breakfast to raise money for scholarships. 8 to 10 a.m. at the Carson City Applebee’s. Carson City Kiwanis is serving short stacks for a tall cause at the Carson City Applebee’s on Oct. 5, 2019 from 8 to 10 a.m. The entire proceeds of this event will support the Ralph Denny Memorial Scholarship that awards a one-time $750 scholarship to a local high school graduate each school year.

Guitars and Ukuleles at the Brewery Arts Center. 9 to 10 a.m. at 449 W. King Street. Laurence Juber’s career jumped into hyper-speed when Paul McCartney asked him to join Wings as lead guitarist. Since then he has become one of the world’s great acoustic guitarists. Daniel Ho is a six time Grammy® award winning multi-instrumentalist with a world-wide following. Together, they will present a new musical project called Guitars & Ukuleles, an incredible day of hands-on learning, culminating in a live performance for guitar and ukulele enthusiasts.

'Fall Tot Trot' teaches children to love the outdoors with Carson River scavenger hunt. 10 a.m. at Riverview Park. Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space will host a “Fall Tot Trot” Sunday, October 5 beginning at 10 a.m. at Riverview Park. This interpretive hike includes a scavenger hunt to learn about the Carson River habitat, and will help foster a love of exploring the outdoors!

Voices of the Past in Virginia City. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Silver Terrace Cemetery, 381 Cemetery Rd. Come see the history of the Comstock come alive! The event is a ghostly walking tour performed by Funtime Theater and raises funds for the cemetery’s restoration.

Train to Virginia City from Carson City. Event takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 4650 Eastgate Siding Road. Prices for the ride range from $25-$55. Rediscover Nevada’s rich history in mining and mill on the V&T Carson City-Virginia City route as you meander through tunnels, canyons and mining towns aboard a restored 1914 Pullman coach led by a 1916 Baldwin 2-8-0 steam locomotive. This relaxing all-day train excursion is fully narrated with historical facts and anecdotes. Mommy and Me networking event at Our Park in Dayton. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at at 370 River Street, just off of Highway 50 as you’re entering Dayton. There will be a Mommy and Me Networking event Oct. 5 at Our Park in Dayton. We are there to let the kiddos run around before the predicted wet winter takes hold. The event will run all day. Local direct sales reps are invited to bring their businesses and kids to have a great day at the park. Locals who are interested in browsing are strongly encouraged to come and visit.

Guided tours of the Nevada State Capitol. Two separate tours will take place at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. every Saturday in Carson City. Tours typically take an hour and include both the exterior of the building, nearby memorials as well as the interior of the building. Tours are available for up to 20 people on a first-come, first-served basis. The building includes numerous historic artifacts that range from portraits of past Nevada governors to sculptures to historical items showcased during Nevada’s Sesquicentennial celebration. The Capitol remains open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Guided tours of up to 20 people can be arranged in advance by calling the Nevada State Museum’s Education Program at 775-687-4810, ext. 237.

Austin Bantam Society to celebrate 51st annual meeting with Carson City car show. 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Nevada State Legislative Grounds. The Austin Bantam Society will hold its 51st annual meeting in Carson City, Oct. 4-5. A car show will take place at the Nevada State Legislative Grounds on Saturday, Oct. 5 from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cars in the club include: American Austins 1930-35, American Bantams 1938-1940, British Austin 7s 1923-1938, and BRC 1940-41, which were the first Jeeps. These very rare small cars are part of our forgotten automobile history. Please join us on Saturday, Oct. 5 for a rare opportunity to see the cars and you will fall in love with them.

30th annual World Championship Outhouse Races. 12 to 3 p.m. at C Street in Virginia City. This is one time and place where potty humor is accepted and encouraged – the 30th annual World Championship Outhouse Races. This free event dates back when outdoor plumbing was outlawed in Virginia City, angry residents took to the streets with their outhouses in protest, and a tradition was born.

Wine Walk returns to downtown Carson City. 1 to 5 p.m. at 101 N. Carson Street. The Downtown Wine Walk is a must not miss! Held the First Saturday of every month from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. For just $15 and you’ll receive a commemorative wine glass and endless reasons to stroll through Downtown sipping and tasting the afternoon away. Bring your wine walk glass with the Carson City Logo on it and pay only $12. Saturday Beginning Wheel Throwing at Ogres-Holm Pottery. 1 to 4 p.m. at 1215 S. Carson St. in Carson City. The Ogres of Ogres-Holm introduce you to clay in this 6-week open start class, including open studio time, is designed to get you started. It’s a great way to relax on a Saturday afternoon. $175 for 6 weekly sessions or $45 drop ins.

American Cancer Society hosts Relay for Life at Carson City's Mills Park. 1 to 9 p.m. How has cancer affected you and is there anything you can do? Join your family, friends, neighbors and people from your community as we walk Relay for Life of Carson City/Douglas County this Saturday Oct. 5 from 1 to 9 p.m. at Mills Park. Help us celebrate our survivors, those who are fighting and those would have survived cancer. And join us in remembering those we have lost to cancer. Muscle Powered Sunday bicycle Ride. 9 a.m. Meet at Fremont Elementary School, 1511 Firebox Rd, Carson City, NV 89701, in the south parking lot, next to the Linear Ditch Trail. Come join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride around Carson City! Muscle Powered is a local non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building.

Nevada Raider Nation Carson City Chapter Game Watch. 10 a.m. at Jimmy G’s, 301 N. Carson Street. Nevada Raider Nation - Carson City Chapter will host a game watch of the Oakland Raiders vs Chicago Bears at 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 6 at Jimmy G's, 301 N. Carson St., in Carson City. The game, televised live from London, will be shown on three TV screens. New members are welcome to watch with the veterans, and are welcome to join. Membership is $20 per person.

Trails Association, Carson City Parks Recreation and Open Space to host Prison Hill clean-up. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department, with the Pine Nut Mountains Trails Association and the Nevada Off-Highway Vehicle Commission, is sponsoring a volunteer Clean-Up Day at the Prison Hill Recreation Area in the OHV Area. GreenUP!, an environmental education non-profit working with local businesses, asks the community to support sustainable dining by bringing their appetites to Carson City Green Dining Restaurants while the banner flies now through Sunday, March 31.

Mark Twain Days Festival is back this year, May 10-12, with some big changes. Visit Carson City approached the Brewery Arts Center and asked them to partner for the planning of the second year of the festival, which is held in honor of Mark Twain, our region’s most famous writer.

Celebrating its Spring Fling Bunco fundraiser, Soroptimist International of Carson City will begin with a stuffed baked potato bar including bacon, butter, sour cream, broccoli and a side salad at 5:30pm. A no-host bar will be available. At 6:30pm the fun begins including prizes for top Bunco achievers.

United Federal Credit Union is expanding its footprint in Nevada. United opened a new branch in Minden on Monday, March 18, 2024. United has been operating in Nevada since 2009. The Minden branch is United’s ninth location in the state.

The Hangar Tavern is Carson City’s newest bar that offers casino gaming machines, which opened up shop about two months ago off Airport Road.

The airplane-themed business is split sectioned, with the tavern taking up space on one side, which includes several seating options and multiple flat screen televisions for watching sports, while gaming takes up the other half.

The Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation is granting local workforce boards $5 million to address barriers to employment.

The Carson City Symphony, conducted by Music Director David Bugli and Assistant Conductor Brian Fox, presents a concert, "We Got Rhythm," on Sunday, April 28, at 4 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E William Street in Carson City.

Carson Middle School English Teacher Rhonda Holloway, Seeliger Elementary Fourth Grade Teacher Toni Nielson and Mark Twain Fourth Grade Teachers Kylie Jensen and Alyson Haas were recent recipients of the “Apple Award” from the Delta Kappa Gamma NU Chapter in the total amount of $500. There were more than 14 total applicants. Delta Kappa Gamma is an educational organization of teachers who support other teachers.
