SILVER CITY, Nev. — Poet David Lee was a visiting artist at the Resident Artist Program in Silver City in 2016, 2017, and 2018, and will be back again this winter. His repeated stays in the historic Comstock town inspired his latest book of poems, Mine Tailings. It is dedicated to the people of Silver City. The book was released by 5 Sisters Press this Fall, and will be the focus of Lee’s reading at the Silver City Schoolhouse (community center) on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 1 p.m.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of events around the Carson City region Friday through Sunday to celebrate Nevada Day. Activities include the annual parade down Carson Street, a carnival at Mills Park, the 30th annual Nevada Day Classic, The La Ka Lel Be Pow Wow at the MAC, beard and rock drilling contests, delicious food dishes, pancakes, chili and plenty of beverages to suit kids and adults of all ages.

LAKE TAHOE — As the temperature drops outside and we think about using our fireplaces and heating stoves, it’s important to remember a few safety tips and precautions. Heating equipment and improper ash disposal are leading causes of home and wildland fires during the fall and winter months.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit has begun closing recreational facilities around the Tahoe Basin for the winter season. Seasonal closures apply to many Forest Service recreation sites including beaches, campgrounds, picnic areas and National Forest roads.

A 40-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Sunday in the 2700 block of Menlo Drive for suspicion of battery with a deadly weapon, a Carson City Sheriff's Office deputy said.

Partnership Carson City's annual prescription drug roundup Saturday netted 273 pounds of pills and 114 pounds of needles.

North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District and California State Parks may continue prescribed fire operations over the next several weeks in the Tahoe Basin, if weather and conditions permit.

In the wake of today's high winds, several homes on the west side of Carson City are again being inundated by tumbleweeds, most of which nearby residents claim are coming from the nearby Andersen Ranch, and the city isn't doing enough to stop it.

Hello fellow anglers. The season is changing just like the leaves in Alpine County. Renee and I took a drive up to Apple Hill located in Placerville, Calif., last week and were planning on doing some fishing in the higher lakes.

GENOA, Nev. – Mormon Station is located in the heart of the Genoa National Historic District, which encompasses over 25 structures and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Join a park interpreter for a guided walk throughout a portion of the historic district this fall!

It's that spooky time again, when the leaves begin to fall, Nevada Day is gearing up to bring us the best parade in the state, and our little ghouls and goblins are putting together their terrifying and adorable costumes in preparation for sugary chaos.

While haze from nearby Sierra fires may linger some, we're looking at another pleasant fall day around the capital city heading into Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2019. Events locally include a ribbon cutting and outdoor moving showing at the new Schulz Ranch Park, workshops, a women's safety meeting, a pumpkin patch for kids at Carson Mall, plus art showings and public talks. After hours it will be toasts, cheers and business networking all around at the Dayton Taphouse. Enjoy the day.

The Carson Mall is inviting all children to come and decorate pumpkins in time for Halloween. Children are invited to get creative with pumpkin decorating, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily Tuesday through Saturday, Oct. 19.

The nights are freezing, but the daytime temperature should reach 66 degrees today and the mid to upper 70s later this week. When the temperatures vary from freezing at night to warm days, it’s hard to know how much to water.

CHS has many opportunities for students to become a part of something bigger than just themselves, not that making a name for oneself is a bad idea or anything, but it is up to the student to step on up, come on in, and check them out. There are so many clubs on campus; there are Interact Club meetings at lunch in CHS teacher Erin Been’s room every Thursday, and Been also advises the Represent Club.

The Carson City Office of Nevada JobConnect is hosting the Carson City Fall Job Fair on Tuesday, October 29, 2019 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. In addition, the Carson City Nugget will be hosting a Job Fair on the same day, October 29, beginning at 2 p.m.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the final V&T Railway train rides of the 2019 season, the 27th annual Carson City Pumpkin Patch at Seeliger Elementary School, fundraisers around town, coin press demonstrations at the Nevada State Museum, comedy at the Carson Nugget and more!

The Carson City Fire Department will allow open burning, with a permit, beginning Saturday, Oct. 12, 2019 through Nov. 10, 2019.

A 43-year-old man was arrested Wednesday in the area of Fall and William Street for allegedly trying to fight a Pioneer High School student and throwing rocks at the school.

DAYTON, Nev. — The wind tried to be the story in the first round of Stage One Korn Ferry Tour Qualifying at Dayton Valley Golf Club. But there is too much golf talent in the field of 65 players to allow that to happen even though winds gusted up to 20-25 mph late in the round.

UPDATE: The 19-year-old bear captured Tuesday in Carson City by wildlife officials has died as a result of a brain tumor after he was tranquilized, with the intention of being released later into the wild, according to the Nevada Department of Wildlife. With recent bear sightings around Carson City, including Tuesday morning off of Minnesota Street, it is a sure sign that fall has set in as the capital city area is seeing increased bear foraging activity, according to wildlife officials.

Going into the second week of October, there's plenty of events around the capital city for this Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2019 including a morning walk, evening hike and a bike ride with Muscle Powered. There's also art showings, the grand opening of Carson City's Postal Annex, family movie night at the Carson City Library featuring "Muppets from Space," as well as Big Band jazz music with a fall theme at Living the Good Life and more.
