In September, the Carson City Library will again offer basic introductory computer classes, two of which address Microsoft Excel. Microsoft Excel Formatting will be offered at 6:00 pm on September 10th and is a prerequisite to the second class, Microsoft Excel Calculations offered at 6:00 pm September 17th.

This last weekend of August is filled with ways to celebrate your community. Carson Animal Shelter Initiative, better known as CASI, hosts their annual Bark, Whine, and Dine Fundraiser at Fuji Park. Animal lovers can also head to Carson Catalina Apartments for a rummage sale that benefits the Carson Tahoe SPCA. The Carson City Sheriff's Office young Explorers will host a fundraising car wash; The Marine Corp League can be found at the north Carson Walmart; half of the donations received will go to Deputy Howell’s family fund. And don’t miss out on the drought-friendly water balloon ice bucket challenge raising funds for ALS at Butler Meats on Sunday.

The Nevada Division of Tourism will present its inaugural Governor’s Global Tourism Summit in November, featuring keynote speaker Chris Thompson, president and CEO of Brand USA, Lt. Gov. Mark Hutchison announced Thursday.

The Global Tourism Summit is the evolution of the long-running Governor’s Conference on Tourism, and will take place at the Hilton Lake Las Vegas Nov. 16-17.

Hold on to your hats, Carson City, summer isn’t ready to quit us just yet. An aviation air show at the Minden Airport, the coin show and fair at the Nevada State Museum, and a fishing derby for the kids at Little Washoe Lake are only the tip of the iceberg. The Pavilion at Mills Park is where you’ll find the annual Carson High Football Boosters Fundraising BBQ. The Quicksilver Dog Agility Trials are always fun to watch, and they’ll be at Fuji Park all weekend. Carson Lanes has family fun indoors and out all day long during their Bowling Blast-off.

The Jazz & Beyond - Carson City Music Festival concludes with nine events on Saturday, August 22, and four events on Sunday August 23.

The deceased suspect in the shooting death of Carson City Sheriff's Deputy Carl Howell appears to have posted several comments over the past few months critical of area law enforcement.

A Facebook user named Johnny Pope, with photos matching those released of suspect Jonathan Pope, referred to law enforcement officers as "scumbags" in a comment on a June 5 story on Carson Now about the sheriff's department increasing enforcement efforts against speeding.

The capital city community has extended an outpouring of support for a Carson City Sheriff's Office deputy who was shot and killed early Saturday morning responding to a domestic violence call at an east Carson City home.

With officers, administrators and volunteer in police service personnel streaming out of the sheriff's administrative office during a series of briefings Saturday morning and afternoon, they've been met randomly by Carson City and surrounding area community members, bringing flowers, cards, bracelets, statuettes, along with words of respect, sorrow and to offer condolences.

With goals to improve communication and help solve problems, Carson City Supervisor Jim Shirk seeks community input.

"My goals are to: Improve communication between city government and citizens; and Help to solve the real problems that citizens are frustrated about," said Shirk.

"Meeting members of the community on their terms will help build community confidence. For that reason I am personally available 6 days a week (excluding Sunday’s), to meet here at my office, or at a location of your choosing.

Van Gogh & Vino, an open art studio where participants of all skills and abilities can sip wine, socialize and paint works of art with friends, family and co-workers, will relocated from Carson Valley to a 2,000 square foot studio in Carson City by Red's Old 395 Grill and the new Tahoe Ridge Winery. Owner Teresa Sexton made the announcement Wednesday on Facebook.

Ronald McDonald House Charities® Northern Nevada (RMHC® Northern Nevada or the Reno Ronald McDonald House®) is now accepting registrations for its 4th Annual Red Shoe Gala at the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa on Friday, Oct. 2, 2015. The event will raise money for the organization’s mission of keeping families together while their child receives treatment at an area hospital, continuing its theme to “Make Someone Happy!”

Carson City Pop Warner Football and Cheer program practices are now underway. All levels are practicing Monday through Thursday. There will be a Friday Night Lights fundraising event this Friday, August 14 from 6-9 p.m. at Governors Field.

There will be music, food and vendors, games, bounce houses, face painting, balloons, and more. Our goal is to raise funds for our football and cheer program.

Trash Mobs are a grassroots effort (based on the popular flash mobs) with the intention of keeping the Carson City walkways and bikeways free of litter.

Designed to make it convenient for people with busy schedules to give back to their community, Trash Mobs take place on the third Saturday of each month from 8-9 a.m.

How does a picnic sound? Head to the Capitol Grounds for an afternoon of music beginning with the Champagne Singers at 4:30 p.m. followed by the Reno Video Game Symphony. Bring a chair or blanket, something to snack on, and your friends and family. The Carson City Library is wrapping up its adult summer reading program with a special presentation by adventurer, photographer, cyclist Rick Gunn. Like, did you totally know that Clueless is playing at the Galaxy Theater tonight? Miss out on that? As if.

After the Friday wind and rain, we are supposed to see some clear skies: but don’t quote me on that. You know how the weather here can be. This summer the Brewery Arts Center has featured Art in the Park three days a week in the parking lot of Empire Elementary School near the entrance of Park Terrace in Carson City.

The program is made possible through the Brewery Arts Center and a grant from the Nevada Arts Council. The hope is by next summer grant funding will be available for the program to operate five days a week, said BAC Executive Director Gina Hill.

Sundays are a great day to hit up the Carson City Library now that it’s open seven days a week. A viewing of the movie Persepolis begins at 2 p.m. and is about a young girl during the Iran Revolution in the 1970s. Pop-up Storytime is great choice for younger patrons.

The Fair at Fuji Park and the Silver Dollar Classic at Mills Park are still going strong. While you’re at Mills Park, take a ride on the train: rides begin at noon. Genoa is a great place to spend an afternoon. This month’s Sweet Sippin Sunday features Tequila cocktails and music by Carson’s own, Janera Paxton of the Whitehats. Mozart lovers won’t want to miss TOCATTA at the Shepard in the Sky Church for their Mozart in the Mountains concert.

The third annual City Wide Short Film Competition kicked off Saturday evening with a red carpet event and then a screening of the short films. Seventeen teams created short 1 to 10 minute films to be shown to the public and voted on. All movies were required to use the same line of dialog, prop and sound effect.

Summer fun looks like a wine walk, thanks to the Downtown Business Association. Saturday, August 1, the festivities begin at 1 p.m., rain or shine. You have until 5 p.m. to hit as many stops as possible before the raffle begins. Every first Saturday over thirty shops, restaurants, businesses, and organizations stock up on wine and goodies and throw open their doors to the crowds of merry-makers. It's always a great reason to explore downtown.

The wine walk runs from 1pm to 5pm. Sign up at the Carson Nugget, Cactus Jacks, Bella Fiore Wines, Carson Jewelry and Loan, Remedy's Bar, or Touched by Angels.

Carson City Pottery announces a new class that begins Thursday. Known for his unusual functional teapots, Rich McGregor will share the techniques that go into making them in this 4 week class, which runs on Thursday evenings from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm. The cost is $120 plus glaze firing costs.

Dust off your bowler hat, lace up your high-heeled boots and join us for the first ever Tall Timber Ball. On Oct. 9 from 6-10 pm you can style it steampunk or go grunge and join us under the timber beams of Valhalla’s Grand Hall while the DJ spins from the massive stone fireplace. Cool prizes will go to the most interesting looks of the night. This event kicks off the inaugural Tahoe WordWave festival and will benefit art and culture in South Lake Tahoe.

Sunday has gone to the dogs, thanks to Adele’s. Help raise funds for the Carson-Tahoe SPCA with the annual ‘Paws on the Veranda’ and enjoy breakfast or lunch with your furry (well-mannered and leashed) friend. Can you believe it? It’s the last weekend of July and the kids will be headed back to school in no time. Don’t be dismayed though, plenty of summer fun can still be found. Avid Carson City photographer Joe Reinbolt, who runs the Carson City Pix Facebook page, snapped this cautious deer Tuesday morning. The young deer stopped and then crossed the street near the Carson Nugget across from Cactus Jack's.

"I swear he looked both ways," said Reinbolt.

Hit up the Nevada State Railroad Museum for rides on the Steam Train. Mills Park has a much smaller train to ride and plenty of room to run, play, and picnic. Watch the kittens play at Petsmart: SPCA is hosting a kitten party for adoptable pets. A concert with the Mark Sexton Band at the Dangberg Home Historic Ranch is a great way to end the weekend.

Guests adorned in flapper dresses, feather boas and long pearl beads walked the red carpet at The Carson City Classic Cinema Club's first Hollywood Gala Saturday evening. In celebrating the Club's first Anniversary, the theme of the event was the First Academy Awards of 1929.
