What Works: Tis the Season to Volunteer

I volunteer a lot of my time. Every potential client gets 30 minutes on the phone with me. I work with community organizations to support local causes. Advocates to End Domestic Violence is one of those. Each holiday, I usually write something about the importance of volunteerism. Yet, the power and two-way benefit of volunteerism didn’t hit me until I returned home to Carson City.

Small Business Saturday: Carson City art galleries offer unique gifts

As the holiday season approaches, Charlie Blim, owner of Charlie B Gallery, advises going into local shops rather than big box stores.

“I’ve got stuff made by actual humans,” he said. “All that other stuff is made by machines.”

But when customers come into his shop, he’s not pushing to make a sale. He’s got a bigger goal in mind.
“Art changed my life,” he said. “If they take the time to learn the history, learn about the artist, it could change their lives too. It’s not just about buying stuff.”

Yesterday, I checked into an AirBnb in downtown El Paso. My lovely friends in San Diego had put me up the night before. We watched a movie called Sicario, a flick about Mexican drug cartels. Needless to say, the movie is partially set in Juarez, the border town right next to El Paso. It was the perfect set up to a nice waterfall of assumption.

An Early Graduate at Pioneer High School

Brooke Morris, a Carson Online and Pioneer High School student, is graduating early due to her ability to earn credits faster at PHS and Carson Online. At Pioneer, students can earn a minimum of 9 credits per year on the campus or they can also explore part/full time online options.

Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies on lookout for drivers using cell phones

On Thursday, Nov. 10, 2016 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. the Carson City Sheriff’s Office will deploy deputies throughout Carson City in attempt to locate distracted drivers, mainly drivers talking or texting on cellular phones. The funding for this operation is provided by a Joining Forces grant.
