Pioneer High School is a public high school in the Carson City School District. All 9th-12th grade CCSD students are encouraged to enroll. PHS is accredited through AdvancED and has been recognized by the Nevada Department of Education as a “Highlighted School” for achievement in 2011 and 2018. Students at PHS have been able to earn an Associate’s Degree from WNC along with their high school diploma free of charge.

CARSON CITY — Saturday morning five seniors from Carson High School’s Cross Country team celebrated the end of the school year and their sports seasons with a 20.20 mile touch-less relay run. They began on the westside of Carson, ran up through Lakeview to loop around Franktown Road and finished at Bower’s Mansion State Park.

Please join us for a 7-mile round trip hike beginning at Silver Saddle ranch house, following up Dead Truck Trail, over the saddle to traverse North Loop, and back down Dead Truck Trail to our cars. There will be many splendid views of the Eastern Sierra to the west of Eagle and Carson Valleys.

Regardless a runner’s place or time at the annual Take it to the Lake Half-Marathon Run, everyone inevitably leaves with a taste of success.

On July 25, Joe Tummarello, a long-term client with Carson City-based sober-living facility Lyfe Recovery, passed away at Carson Tahoe Hospital. By all accounts, a month before his death he had been in fine health for a man of 76. He dealt with COPD and needed an oxygen tank to breathe in the high altitude of northern Nevada, but a check-up with his doctors during May of 2019 showed he was nowhere near the brink of death.

However, after being relocated to Carson City from Lyfe Recovery’s Reno facility, Joe’s medication was withheld and he was denied medical intervention after a rapid deterioration of his health, which ultimately, it is alleged, led to his death.

Join Muscle Powered on the last Saturday in August for a beautiful hike to Marlette Lake. The hike begins from the Spooner Lake parking lot, travels north on North Canyon Road, and continues onto the single-track trail north to Marlette Lake.

Heading into Thursday, August 15, 2019 we can expect hot weather to continue with high temperatures near 100. Among events for the day, there will be a wreath remembrance ceremony for fallen Carson City law enforcement officers at the sheriff's office, a Muscle Powered morning hike, art showings, and a meeting of the Status of Women in Nevada group at the Carson Nugget. As part of the Jazz and Beyond music festival, there will be an outdoor "Woodstock Remembered" concert at Comma Coffee and a music presentation, "All About that Bass" by Scot Marshall and Friends at the Nevada State Museum.

Heading into the midweek, Wednesday, August 14, 2019 activities abound around the capital city. There's a new group for writers that meets at the Brewery Arts Center; a salary negotiation workshop at WNC, a chautauqua and author presentations at Dangberg Historic Park. There's also the Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music Festival that will feature the Wesley Orsolic Trio during Wheeled Food Wednesday at the BAC, with jams to continue at Living the Good Life; there's also a real estate workshop for veterans, art showings, salsa dancing and more. Heading into Tuesday, August 13, there's a galaxy of events lined up, beginning at midnight with a meteor shower watch party at WNC's Jack C. Davis Observatory. When the sun arrives there's fitness events, a book talk at the Nevada State Library and Archives, outdoor Carson City jazz festival happenings at Comma Coffee and Bob McFadden Plaza, family movie night at the library and more. Heading into the first day of the work week, if you're an early, early riser or are settling in for the night, you'll want to step outside at around 3 a.m. for the peak of the Perseid shower, which will be in the eastern sky. If you missed them, there will be a viewing party hosted by Carson City Parks and Rec at the Jack C. Davis Observatory at WNC beginning at midnight Tuesday morning, August 13. Otherwise, it's onward and upward into the day with a Cooperative Extension presentation, Shred Kids mountain bike camp, Red Cross sitter certification class, West Coast swing dancing and more.

Many folks have had enough of the anger, condescension, dishonesty, hate, bitterness, aggression, etc. that are so plentiful these days. So, despite my inclination to answer so much of it (and it needs to be answered), I write today about some reasons to be grateful for the world we inhabit -- and hopeful about the future.

The Carson Mall wants to thank all the participants who came out for its second Got Hot Wheels Race Car Race Day on Saturday. The next Hot Wheels race will be Sept. 14.

Racers brought their favorite Hot Wheels, Matchbox or similar-sized car and competed against peer racers for bragging rights and prizes. The race was on a 15-foot downhill race track and was single elimination.

July 27, 8 am- Tahoe Rim Trail, North from Spooner Summit to the saddle of Snow Valley Peak. This is a beautiful hike with some spectacular views of Lake Tahoe and the surrounding area.

Heading into Father’s Day weekend, there's plenty of jam-packed activities around the Carson City region. There's Flag Day ceremonies at the Nevada Veterans Memorial and at the Elks Lodge. The Stewart Father’s Day Powwow happens Friday to Sunday and features hundreds of American Indian dancers, drummers artists and cultural enthusiasts. Lace up the tennis shoes for the Eastside Historical tour of the capital city hosted by Muscle Powered. Journey of Hope returns to Western Nevada College at 5 p.m. to settle into the evening. Open Mic Night at A to Zen will cap-off an eventful Friday heading into the weekend.

Meet in the parking area next to the ranch house at Silver Saddle Ranch off of Carson River Road. Please join us for an 8-mile round-trip hike that traverses most of the "Escape from Prison Hill" trail. We will head up Dead Truck Trail, cross over to hike down to the most western end of Prison Hill, turn south and then east to arrive at the highest point of Prison Hill.

There is something about the start of Spring that makes Sundays seem more pleasant; despite the fact that the weekend is on its downhill slide. There are always pleasant things to do in Carson City come rain, snow, wind or shine.

Get fit for your Winter Sports and Obstacle Course Racing Events at Well Being Massage and Functional Fitness. All winter sport and obstacle course enthusiasts in the area are invited to participate. The three-week program starts Tuesday, February 12, 2019.

RENO — A destructive fire-generated vortex — a massive stream of rising, spinning, smoke, ash and fire — that topped out at 17,000 feet above the earth, accelerated the Carr fire that killed eight people and devastated a widespread area in the Redding, Calif., region in July 2018.

The vortex, a little-observed atmospheric phenomena, was spinning with the power of a class three tornado, which earned it the name of Firenado.
