For many, it was a touchstone moment where music, culture, and politics were taking a major turn. It gained even more cultural significance when the Woodstock documentary movie came out the next year. The festival included an incredible line-up of musicians. Among the performers at Woodstock were Richie Havens; Ravi Shankar; Arlo Guthrie; Country Joe McDonald; Santana; The Grateful Dead; Janis Joplin; Sly and the Family Stone; The Who; Jefferson Airplane; Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; and Jimi Hendrix. As we reflect on this event, exactly 50 years to the day when Richie Havens performed the first song of the festival, some of us may recall what that event meant to a country struggling with unequal rights and an unpopular war.
Join guitarist Curt Mitchell and Friends in “Woodstock Remembered,” a reflection on that event and its impact on our culture. The event will take place Thursday, Aug. 15, 2019, from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. in Comma Courtyard. Joining Curt are Vincent Gates on bass & guitar, Jeff Laaxo on keys and sax, and Fletch on drums. Please have your bike inspected by a bike mechanic prior to the camp to make sure it is in working order. A limited supply of bikes and helmets are available if you do not have your own. In order to register for the intermediate level camp, participants must have completed a beginner level camp earlier this summer or the camp last summer. Jazz and Beyond: All About that Bass by Scot Marshall and Friends. 7 to 9 p.m. Scot Marshall presents “All About That Bass,” on Thur., Aug. 15, 2019, at 7:00 p.m. in the Nevada State Museum, Carson City. This lecture will also include a performance by a combo lead by Marshall. Doors open at 6:30 pm, and lecture starts at 7:00 p.m. All About That Bass will deal with the origin, history, and evolution of the bass from the early 3 String monster Octabasse through early Baroque and on into the 20th century through today. The bass takes on many forms in its evolution from bowed orchestral application to plucked rhythm section lines providing the fundamental tone the rest of the music is built on that propels the ensemble forward. Scot will utilize a variety of instruments including: upright bass, Fender Precision bass, Fender Jazz Bass, fretless bass, 5 string, resonator bass & Bass ukulele. The majority of the presentation will focus on the role of the bass in the 20th century in a variety of settings as the music and technique evolve over the decades.
Not merely a lecture, but a performance that features a quintet of some of the finest musicians in our area. The band features Graham Marshall on violin, Dallas Smith on woodwinds, Ron Savage on keyboards, Dr. Andy Heglund on drums and percussion, and Scot Marshall on a variety of bass instruments. Educational as well as entertaining, the performance will emphasize the importance of the bass throughout history as the fundamental rhythmic and harmonic foundation of ant musical ensemble.
