The Bubba Love Sponge Foundation and a national bicycle organization, in cooperation with KRZQ 104.1 FM Reno and law enforcement across the region presented the Carl Howell family two checks Tuesday as part of the Bikes for Badges motorcycle run held in October.

As of Saturday, I am retiring as the Outdoor Editor for Carson Now and a very special outdoor photographer (my wife Elaine) will also be retiring.
It's been a great run, full of great memories, but sooner or later all good things must come to an end, and Oct. 31 is that special time for the two of us.

Are you ready for this? Nevada Day weekend has arrived and brings with it a downtown filled with friends, neighbors, and fun. Hot air balloons, the annual beard contest, the parade, tours of the Governor’s Mansion, and more make this time of year amazing. The carnival at Mills Park, and the Pow-Wow at the Carson Colony take the festivities to the next level.

Nevada Highway Patrol troopers arrested a Colorado fugitive Tuesday east of Fernley who was wanted on felony charges, considered armed and dangerous and had made threats to authorities, an NHP Trooper said.

An attempt to locate the suspect, Eldon Lloyd Dick, 55 of Egnar, Colo near Grand Junction was advised statewide.
He had an active felony warrant out of the San Miguel County Court for charges including: first degree felony criminal trespass, child abuse, prohibited use of a weapon, harassment and criminal mischief, said NHP Trooper Duncan Dauber.

On Oct. 12-13, the Sierra Lutheran Girl’s Golf team attended the Division III State Meet in Ely, NV. All of the girls played well; Kami Niles placed 6th overall. This marks the beginning of a great program at Sierra Lutheran, and the students on this year’s roster (three are sophomores, one is a junior) are excited for next year.

On Saturday, the Sierra Lutheran Falcons battled fiercely again the Smith Valley Bulldogs. It was a tough game, played in the wind and rain at Smith’s home field. Smith Valley won the coin toss, choosing to start on offense during their homecoming game.

Clouds lifted lazily over the pine nut mountains as Old Glory floated in the breeze. The smell of peanuts and popcorn caught noses with delightful surprise as foot long hot dogs tempted resolves with their sizzle and pop. The sounds of John Fogerty’s Centerfield crackled through the speakers and soon Whitney Houston’s 1991 version of the Star Spangled Banner would bring players and spectators alike to a standing salute.

Carson City based Miles Construction has hired Victor Mejorado as a project engineer to support project management teams on two large regional projects, the AquaMetals lead battery recycling AquaRefinery and the Fulcrum BioEnergy Sierra feedstock processing facility.

Restoration of the historic 1875 steam locomotive “The Glenbrook” has been recognized with an international award from the Association of Tourist Railroads and Railway Museums.

The Nevada Department of Public Safety honored its recipients of the 2014 employee awards Wednesday in Carson City. Here are the winners:

Silver Springs, NV – Silver Springs Airport was the recipient of a $700,000 grant from the Federal Aviation Administration and sponsored by Lyon County. With these funds, the Silver Springs airport was able to increase the size of the taxiway and rehabilitate the runway.

These two improvements are vital to the overall master plan to the airport and further enables economic growth and aviation needs to the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong is the winner of the 2015 DEA, DARE Law Enforcement Executive of the Year, officials announced Monday.

Francisco X. Pegueros, President and CEO of DARE America and Special Agent in Charge of the DEA Los Angeles Field Division Anthony D. Williams made the announcement. The coveted award is given to a senior law enforcement officer who epitomizes an extraordinary commitment to drug prevention and enforcement.

Although variable spring weather conditions contributed to prolonged periods on the road and away from Carson City, Western Nevada College's baseball players remained committed to their No. 1 priority as a Wildcat: academics.

WNC earned National Junior College Athletic Association Academic All-American honors with a team grade point average of 3.19.

Muscle Powered's Jeff Potter was honored recently for his work on the Ash Canyon to Kings Trail in Carson City at the National and International Trail Awards, held in Portland, Oregon.

American Trails presents the National and International Trails Awards Program to recognize the tremendous contributions of volunteers, professionals, and other leaders who are working for the betterment of trails both nationally and internationally and in both rural and urban settings. These awards are presented every two years at the International Trails Symposium. The ceremony was held May 19.

Governor Brian Sandoval released the following statement after the Nevada State Senate passed Senate Bill 483, the Nevada Revenue Plan.

Chautauqua performer Steve Hale will present “George Whittell, Jr." at the Dangberg Historic Ranch Home, Wednesday, June 10 at 6:30 p.m. This is a free outdoor event. The park is located at 1450 Hwy 88, ¼ mile north of the Carson Valley Veterinary Hospital. Visitors are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or use one of the park’s chairs. Dogs are not permitted in the park, with the exception of certified service animals.

A local metal artist, Robbie St. Clair unveiled his six-foot metal sculpture of two mustangs rearing. The Carson City Chamber commissioned St. Clair to create the piece of uniquely Nevada art.

Continuing in the vein of placing public art in public places such as that placed along the I-580 corridor as part of the freeway construction, St. Clair’s mustang sculpture was unveiled and dedicated Saturday.
St. Clair began to pursue metal 10 years ago when he found himself wanting to create art that was tangible. He began to construct signs and started taking art classes.

Train buffs and dignitaries gathered at the Nevada Rail Road Museum under rainy skies, Saturday for the unveiling of the Glenbrook, a historic locomotive that once hauled lumber from Lake Tahoe sawmills to Spooner Summit.

“Nowhere else can you see an event like this,” said Peter Barton, Administrator of the Division of Museums and History. “We’ve done research before we started restoring, we spent months with historians and researchers. The locomotive has been painstakingly restored, no where else can you find a locomotive that has had so much time spent working on it.”

It’s a Railroad kind of weekend in Carson City. The historic 1885 Glenbrook Steam Engine will be on display Saturday, all steamed up with the Inyo at the Nevada Railroad Museum. You will want to arrive before the dedication ceremony at 11 a.m. to get the best photos. The V and T Steam Engine #25 will be running all weekend if you want to take a ride. It’s also opening weekend for the Virginia and Truckee that departs from the Eastgate Depot for Virginia City. Roundtrips sell out fast, so make sure to get a reservation if you want to go.

Last week, Assistant Controller Geoffrey Lawrence and I presented to the Legislature the state budget we developed with some Assembly members, professionals and business people as an alternative to the Governor’s proposal.

Las Vegas left-wing pundit Steve Sebelius trashed it and us. No surprise because he’s an aggressive tax-spend-regulate statist PC liberal, while our proposals are the antidote to such maladies. What was surprising is the ignorance, laziness, carelessness and possible malice and dishonesty in his attacks. They demonstrate the sorry state of much journalism today.

After reviewing proposals and finalists, the Carson City Board of Supervisors and Public Works have picked Q&D Construction to serve as the Construction Manager at Risk for the Downtown Carson Street Urban Design Project, said Carson City Public Works Downtown Project Manager Danny Rotter.

This award is presented to exceptional individuals who have reached the pinnacle of their career, and who have a proven passion and commitment to Carson Tahoe and through outstanding efforts, have bettered the healthcare commitment to the organization and the community.

By 1943, it was saved from scrap and donated by the Bliss Family to the Nevada State Museum, where it pleased countless youngsters who crawled all over it outside the museum’s doors on Carson Street for four decades. Restored by the Nevada State Railroad Museum, it is under steam again.
