Jazz and Beyond festival in Carson City gets busy Thursday with three venues
The 2015 Carson City Jazz and Beyond music festival heats up Thursday with multiple performances around town to hit all the right notes and music styles with piano jazz, blues, roots and smooth jazz at three different venues.
Boogie Woogie Hall of Famer Carl Sonny Leyland turns on the piano keys at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall from 7 to 9 p.m. Born and raised on the South Coast of England, Leyland was drawn as a child to the American music he heard on LP records.
At age 15, he discovered Boogie Woogie, went to the piano, and began on a path that became his life's purpose. He relocated to the USA, and in 2010 was inducted into the Boogie Woogie Piano Hall of Fame. Back by popular acclaim, Leyland performed in Carson City for the first time at last year's festival. Admission is free; donations include chance on a door prize. Information about Leyland is on his website www.carlsonnyleyland.com.
Brent Johnson and The Call Up will play blues, blues rock, roots rock, and Americana from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Comma Courtyard, 312 S. Carson St. A guitar prodigy since age four, South Texas-born Brent moved to New Orleans in his teens, where legendary "Braille Blues Daddy" Bryan Lee recognized his virtuosity, drive, and dedication.
Johnson has recorded and toured internationally for the past ten years with Bryan Lee and the Blues Power Band. Through this association, Johnson has played major Jazz and Blues Festivals around the world and with outstanding blues artists Buddy Guy, Lonnie Brooks, Eddie Shaw, Gatemouth Brown, Michael Burks, David Maxwell, Bruce Katz, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and Howlin' Wolf associate Hubert Sumlin. Brent Johnson and The Call Up released their debut album "Set The World On Fire" in 2014. The band features Brent Johnson, guitar and vocals; Bill Blok, bass; and John Perkins, drums. Information about the band is on www.reverbnation.com/brentjohnsonband.
Also on Thursday, the Jazz van Gogh duo plays smooth jazz and Latin, blues, contemporary, Flamenco and classical styles on flute and guitar, 5 to 7 p.m. at Tahoe Ridge Winery & Bistro, 1105 S. Carson Street. Mike Beck, cowboy singer featured at The National Cowboy Poetry and Music Gathering in Elko, plays solo acoustic guitar, 6 to 9 p.m. on the verandah at Café at Adele's, 1112 N. Carson Street.
The Thursday, August 13 performances are part of the Jazz and Beyond - Carson City Music Festival, continuing through August 23 in the Capital City. The annual festival, a homegrown event that began in 2004, features more than 100 performers in over 60 performances, and most are admission free. The festival is produced by Mile High Jazz Band Association with support from Carson City, state grants, and private donations.
The Carson City Chamber of Commerce recently presented its "Best Annual Event" award for 2015 to the Jazz & Beyond Music Festival. For a detailed festival schedule, call 775-883-4154.
