Western Nevada College has announced that it will graduate 515 students for the 2014-15 academic year. The 2015 commencement ceremony will take place on Monday, May 18, 11 a.m. at the Marv Teixieira Pavilion in Mills Park, in Carson City.

The class of 2015 will receive 568 degrees and certificates.

Sophomore outfielder Jake Bennett became the first Western Nevada College baseball player to win the Scenic West Athletic Conference Player of the Year honor outright when coaches selected their postseason honorees this week.
Bennett joined former Wildcat Brian Barnett, who shared the conference's top player award in 2008.

Just when it looked as if Western Nevada College was going to make a late-inning rally against Salt Lake on Friday night, reliever Jared White had other ideas.

Long time Carson City restaurant, The Cracker Box, is celebrating 35 years in business over Mother’s Day weekend. Carson City Library will present a memoir-writing workshop facilitated by Ursula B. Carlson, Ph.D., on Tuesday, May 12, at 6 p.m., in the library Digitorium. Writing a memoir can be done as a short piece, such as an essay, or the story can take on a larger aspect and become a book.

Dr. Carlson will guide the process with suggestions for a well-organized structure. The popularity of memoir-writing and memoir publishing has swelled in recent years; we have a story, we have to share. Dr. Carlson’s workshop will provide the impetus to help you get started.

Major League Baseball scouts coming out to see highly touted right-handed pitcher Phil Bickford on Thursday saw a couple of other arms to focus their radar guns on in Henderson.

Western Nevada College sophomore right-hander Max Karnos allowed just one hit through the first six innings and sophomore reliever Connor Zwetsch threw 1 2/3 innings of hitless relief as the Wildcats nearly handed Bickford his second defeat of the season.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. —Carson City, Nev. native, John Bommelman, is in his first semester as an intern for Studio One, an award-winning television show produced at the University of North Dakota. He currently is on the weather team. He works as a camera operator on show day, and produces content to the weather portion of the show. “My favorite part of Studio One is having the equipment to complete any task,” says Bommelman.

Sophomore Day for the Western Nevada College baseball team brought a cold morning rain and a little hail from the skies above, as well an emotionally charged effort by the Wildcats, playing their final home game of the regular season Saturday at John L. Harvey Field in Carson City.

Freshman outfielder Bradley Lewis delivered Western Nevada College's second walk-off victory of the 2015 season on Friday afternoon against Utah State University Eastern. Lewis stroked a walk-off double to score Jon Guzman as the Wildcats rallied for a 7-6 baseball victory over the Golden Eagles at John L. Harvey Field in Carson City.

Poetry lovers are in for a treat on Thursday, May 7, at Western Nevada College in Carson City. Published poets Laura Wetherington and Jared Stanley are scheduled to read starting at 4 p.m. in WNC’s Main Gallery.

“I don't know how long it's been since WNC had poets read here who have actually published books, but it's been quite a while,” said Douglas Barrett, Ph.D., an English instructor at WNC, is coordinating the event.

Barrett said that Wetherington and Stanley, who teach at Sierra Nevada College in Incline Village, bring a contemporary style to poetry.

Congressman Mark Amodei (NV-2), along with 29 original cosponsors, took steps Wednesday to address the strategic and economic vulnerabilities presented by mineral production, including rare earth elements — an industry dominated by China and other foreign nations.

The introduction of H.R. 1937, the National Strategic and Critical Minerals Act of 2015, is intended to address American dependence on foreign minerals and to enable the United States to more efficiently develop its own mineral supplies, upon which, according to a recent 60 Minutes report, “modern U.S. life depends.”

Nearly perfect relief pitching was the key to Western Nevada College sweeping a Scenic West Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader from Colorado Northwestern on Saturday in Rangely, Colo.
Sophomore pitcher Max Karnos tossed a one-hitter over five innings of relief as the Wildcats of Carson City won the opener, 6-1, and then Connor Zwetsch and Ty Fox allowed just one hit to the Spartans for the final 6 innings as WNC completed the sweep with a come-from-behind 7-4 victory.

Since the early 1980s, May has been a month for celebrating historic preservation and archaeology in Nevada. Agencies and organizations have teamed to spread awareness of archaeological and historic preservation efforts throughout the state and encourage both residents and visitors to explore and learn about Nevada’s significant archaeological and historical treasures.

The road certainly hasn't been kind to the Western Nevada College baseball team. After a difficult 11-6 loss to Salt Lake on Thursday, a game in which the Wildcats led 6-1 in the seventh inning, WNC didn't take advantage of a three-hitter by sophomore right-hander Max Karnos on Friday.

Zac Willis doubled in two runs in the seventh inning and tripled in two more runs in the eighth as Salt Lake City Community College rallied to an 11-6 Scenic West Athletic Conference baseball victory over Western Nevada College on Thursday at Cate Field in West Jordan.

With four Wildcats supplying at least two hits, WNC staked freshman pitcher Matt Young to a 6-1 lead through six innings.

Students in Carson City School District are on spring break this coming week. School resumes on Monday, April 13. The week that they return from break will be extremely busy for leadership students, as they will be decorating for three major events to be held April 16, 17, and 18.

Nevada Senator Harry Reid announced today he will retire from the Senate and will not seek re-election in 2016.
