The local nonprofit Muscle Powered is known in the community as an organization that promotes walking and biking as healthy, green transportation alternatives. According to their website, Muscle Powered's motto is "Walk, Bike, Build," and along with building comes maintenance.

The rural mountain lifestyle we all enjoy at Lake Tahoe is not isolated from the major urban areas nearby. On a typical holiday weekend, the Tahoe Basin turns into a recreation thoroughfare as tens of thousands of day and overnight visitors who sustain our local economy drive up from the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento and Reno.

SILVER CITY — Each summer since 2003, the historic Comstock community of Silver City has partnered with Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey to organize a free, public program with guest teachers leading fun, hands-on activities in science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM).

As we celebrate Earth Day this April, let’s remember how important environmental stewardship is to the health of Lake Tahoe, and how important our individual actions are.

Although inspired by his Paiute and Arapaho heritage, Topah Spoonhunter’s artwork is intended for a broader audience.

“The ideas passed down through tribal culture, I think a lot of people might dismiss as primitive,” he said. “But in my experience there’s a lot of knowledge that’s useful today. The spirit of my work can apply to anybody.”

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will soon begin opening recreational facilities in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Weather and snow conditions permitting, Inspiration Point will be the first site to open on April 15, 2017.
