Nevada Humanities is pleased to announce that 27 grants totaling over $104,500 were awarded to fund humanities programs across Nevada, including four in Carson City area.

It’s a planes, trains, and automobiles kind of weekend. Add in bands, bikes and bar-be-ques and we’ve got most of this weekend’s list covered. The Carson City Airport is celebrating 90 years at this year’s open house and fly-in. One of the summer’s best events with balloon rides, cool old planes, and much more: you won’t want to miss it. Beat the heat at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada; all admission fees have been waived today thanks to Carson City Toyota. Summer concerts at the Brewery Arts Center begin tonight with the Original Wailers.

The Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada will offer free admission to all visitors on Saturday, June 23. This free day is being offered courtesy of Carson City Toyota, the June Sponsor of the Month at the Museum. Visitors to the Museum that day can engage in a number of hands-on activities, including, musical instruments, a jungle gym and numerous interactive games, as well as engage in art activities and science learning opportunities.

Memorial Day weekend is often thought of as the kick-off to summer, but in Northern Nevada we know that the weather is a fickle creature. The weather should be dryer and warmer as the weekend progresses but have back-up plans for your bar-be-que, just in case. From the Downtown Carson City Ghost Walk to the Rockin’ Rib Fest at Casino Fandango, a day hike with Muscle Powered to the Spring Blinky Man night-time costumed bike pub crawl – this weekend is chock-full of fun for locals and visitors alike, for the young and young-at-heart.

Reward yourself with a true grit, toe-tapping cowboy concert this Sunday in Carson City at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada featuring Purly Gates, a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist "cowgirl" poet from Texas.

Mother’s Day is Sunday, and there will be plenty of ways for the family to enjoy spending time together all weekend long. Treat Mom to some new flowers for the garden at the annual Greenhouse Project Plant Sale. The Nevada State Museum has a day full of cowboy-related activities planned. Head up to Virginia City on the V and T for a memorable ride through the hills. Ron Swirczek, District 1, has been named the newest president of the Carson City School District Board of Trustees. Swirczek replaces former President Laurel Crossman, District 2, as the school board’s leader.

Every year, the Veterans' Administration holds a talent contest open to all U.S. Veterans. This year, a bronze medal was won by Carson City veteran David Kotzebue.

Although Veterans Day was observed yesterday, there are several things today that honor our former members of the military. Battle Born Harley Davidson is throwing an appreciation party complete with food trucks. Virginia City’s annual Veterans Day Parade begins at 11 a.m. and the City of Reno will commence their parade after a short ceremony beginning at 11:11 a.m. You’ll find an abundance of craft fairs in Carson City, Carson Valley, and Dayton. Every year for Veterans Day, several local and national businesses go out of their way to say thank you to the men and women who have served, and are actively serving in our armed forces. It’s going to be gorgeous all weekend long, and there are plenty of ways to take advantage of the sunny weather. The Annual Cops and Kids Open House at the Carson City Sheriff’s Department is a family favorite with free food, activities, and games. Treasure hunters will be kept busy with the Genoa Community Garage Sale, as well as one encompassing the Saratoga Springs area of Johnson Lane. Scoop the family up and find something to enjoy together. The annual RSVP Spring Carnival is an easy choice, but a round-trip to Virginia City on the historic V and T Steam Train is pretty memorable. Find something pretty for her garden at the Spring Plant Sale that the Greenhouse Project hosts each year. Summer? Winter? Flip a coin. I could’ve guessed the rain was coming, my lilacs just started to bloom. Don’t let your parade get rained out though, downtown Carson will march right through this wet stuff. The early Spring Farmers Market debuts today behind Due Sorella at Nevada and Musser Streets. Grab the kids and enjoy today’s open house with free admission at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada. Stick around for the monthly Downtown Business Association wine walk and find something for Mothers’ Day at one of our wonderful local shops.

The Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada, 813 N. Carson Street, is a downtown staple for anyone with kids. Join them as they celebrate a slew of new exhibits with a free admission day, Saturday, May 6, 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Free admission day has been made possible by a sponsorship from Carson City Toyota.

Lu Olsen, director of the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada, accepts a donation from the Leisure Hour Club during its recent meeting in recognition of the exceptional work that the Museum and its staff does to provide a positive learning environment for children of all ages.

Construction of Carson Street along the downtown corridor is now a little over half way through the project's eight-month timeline and the work remains on pace to be mostly finished by Nevada Day weekend, Carson City Public Works Engineering Manager Daniel Rotter said.

I am quite fond of Tuesdays. For a weekday, they usually have some great offerings. Today's Easy Walk with the Parks and Recreation Department takes you along the Moffat Open Space on the east side of town. The Children's Museum of Northern Nevada offers 'Books and Brags', essentially a story with craft time. Have a hot time with the fire-dancers of Controlled Burn: they meet at A to Zen on Tuesdays and welcome newcomers.

Construction of the downtown corridor of North Carson Street is now in full swing since the March 7 groundbreaking, and already changes have begun taking shape.

Spring has sprung. Days getting longer, flowers blooming, and now Easter weekend is upon us. Egg hunts, brunches, and even a parade are all part of the fun. Take a look at this weekend’s event summary for family fun, live music, and much more.

Celebrate Easter at the Nevada State Railroad Museum (10am-4pm; Storytime at 11am; special crafts and egg hunt; $6 adults, children free)

The fifth annual Nevada's Big Give charity drive will be held statewide on Thursday, March 10.

The Big Give is an online donation drive designed to raise as much money as possible in a 24-hour period for various statewide and local charities.

Carson City Children's Museum held is Wintercraft Fest today to the delight of children and parents alike. Craft tables and interactive museum exhibits kept everyone entertained during the 2-hour event that ends at 1pm.

Fun. Games. Pumpkins. It is Fall and the annual Pumpkin Patch was a great chance to get pumpkins for Halloween Jack O' Lanterns. Pumpkins large and small were sold early in the day as children bought tickets to play the various games of Witches Hat Toss, Brew and the ever popular dunk tank brought around from the Northern Nevada Children's Museum.

The weather couldn't have been better for this annual event.

The Children's Museum of Northern Nevada, Project Empty Bowls Carson City and Deloitte Consulting partnered Friday for a pottery event that brought dozens of children who created and crafted more than 150 clay mugs and bowls.

Deloitte Consulting provided 10 volunteers for the event and has donated 600 pounds of clay that will be used for bowl making projects throughout the year. Friday's event brought nearly 100 children, plus their parents, grandparents and family members.

I have a confession to make. I love Carson City. I’m fifth generation Nevadan, and have been in Carson since I was three years old. I created a Facebook page called ‘I Love Carson City’ almost three years ago because I was getting tired of hearing ‘nothing ever happens in Carson’ or worse ‘I would have gone to that if I had known about it.’ That is why I do what I do. I am a long time local. I love my valley: the people, the views, the restaurants, the parks, the bands and artists. Community is what community does. We are as great as we want to be. Support your local venues, artists, non-profits, and they can do wonders. Project Carson City Empty Bowls Event will be featured at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada on Friday, with free admission to the first 15 kids that make a bowl.
The event is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is sponsored by Deloitte Consulting. It is opened to all ages. Adults welcome. The Children's Museum is located at 813 N Carson St, Carson City.
