The fight for ranching’s future in Carson Valley

In what has now become a year-and-a-half long fight between ranchers and homeowners in Carson Valley, an appeal will be heard in late August for a proposed slaughterhouse in Centerville, a ranching community south of Gardnerville, which had been unanimously denied by Douglas County Commissioners in Nov. 2019.

CARSON CITY, Nev. – Closures will be in place June 9-17 on Centerville Lane, State Route 756 in Douglas County as the Nevada Department of Transportation resurfaces the roadway. The start date was originally set to begin Monday, June 8.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the final V&T Railway train rides of the 2019 season, the 27th annual Carson City Pumpkin Patch at Seeliger Elementary School, fundraisers around town, coin press demonstrations at the Nevada State Museum, comedy at the Carson Nugget and more!

Carson City investigators say arson the cause of vehicle fires at apartment complex

An early Wednesday morning fire at a Brown Street apartment complex that destroyed four vehicles has been determined to be arson, said Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon.

Shooting suspect leads NHP, Douglas and Carson City on high speed pursuit

UPDATE 3:20PM: KTVN Channel 2 is reporting that the suspect caught in Douglas County following a vehicle pursuit was a possible suspect in a shooting that happened in Reno. It was previously reported via law enforcement agencies and alerted through dispatch that the suspect was wanted for homicide. Reno Police tells KTVN that the victim is being treated at the hospital at this time.

UPDATE 1:10PM: Douglas County Sheriff's Office advises the suspect in the vehicle pursuit is in custody in the area of Dresslerville and Highway 88. A female who was with the suspect got out of the vehicle prior to the stop. She was last seen in the area of Airport and Highway 395.

The Nevada Highway Patrol, Douglas County sheriff's and Carson City sheriff's deputies were involved Monday afternoon in a high speed vehicle pursuit southbound on Highway 395.

The Carson City Sheriff's Office and fire department investigators say Sunday night's structure fire at a vacant townhouse under construction has been classified as arson.

Cause of Sunday night's fire at vacant apartment off Little Lane under investigation

The cause of a fire late Sunday that destroyed a vacant apartment unit and caused moderate damage to another unit off of Little Lane on Centerville is under investigation, said Carson City Fire Department Chief Sean Slamon.

David Michael Ortiz passed away March 16 surrounded by family in Gardnerville. He was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico to Joseph and Cruzita Ortiz on April 12, 1950.

David grew up in Santa Fe Springs, California with his 7 siblings and served in the U.S. Navy before moving to Lake Tahoe. He was a Facilities Engineer at Harrah's Lake Tahoe for 33 years where he met and married the love of his life, Paula (Bachmeier).

Storms bring water to roadways, minor flooding in Douglas County

MINDEN — Douglas County has been responding to several reports of minor flooding in the Carson Valley. We have also seen water and minor debris on the roadways in many areas. Douglas County Emergency Management continues to survey the area along with Douglas County road crews and law enforcement.

NDOT: Bike lanes coming to section of Centerville Lane in Gardnerville

Beginning Tuesday, lane closures and detours will be in place on Centerville Lane, State Route 756, near Waterloo Lane in Gardnerville as the Nevada Department of Transportation adds bicycle lanes to the roadway.

I have long found it impossible to decide which Carson City event is my favorite: forever waffling between Nevada Day and the Taste of Downtown. Seeing as the annual parade is still months away, I’m going to side with ‘The Taste’ purely for its timeliness. With over forty local eateries participating, multiple raffles at downtown shops, and seven bands rocking every corner of the event, it’s practically impossible to have a bad time. This might be the biggest happening in town, but it’s by no means the only good time: read on for all this weekend’s options.
