WNC Softball: Makenzie Hospodka, Covione Power Wildcats to Split with Colorado Northwestern
Submitted by editor on Fri, 04/11/2014 - 7:48pmKatilyn Covione pitched a complete-game four-hitter and Makenzie Hospodka knocked in five runs as Western Nevada College softball team returned to the win column in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.
After dropping the opening game of a doubleheader to Colorado Northwestern Community College on Friday, the Carson City based Wildcats battered the Spartans, 8-1, in game two in Rangely, Colo., to end a 16-game SWAC losing streak.
“It wasn’t just a win. I thought it was one of our best games all year,” said WNC coach Leah Wentworth. “They played a really solid game all the way around.”
Carson City Sheriff: Victim of Thursday night beating dies
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Fri, 04/11/2014 - 3:10pmUPDATE: The two men arrested in the fatal beating Thursday of a Carson City man said they were allegedly accosted by the victim who came after them with a machete, according to information obtained by Carson Now.
Leon Arellano Pacheco, 61, died Friday of traumatic injuries to the brain after being beaten in the parking lot of Stanton Arms apartments Thursday night. Two brothers, Ruri Santiago, 27, and Alfredo Santiago, 29, are being held without bail in Carson City Jail.

Fundraiser Proceeds Preserves Comstock History

The fundraising event was part of a commemoration of the restoration of the Upper Yellow Jacket hoist and ore chute in Gold Hill, the Foundation’s first substantial preservation project since organizing in June 2013. Work on the Upper Yellow Jacket hoist and ore chute cost roughly $100,000.

Nevada Increases Election Performance Score

Nevada’s performance ranking leaped from 22nd to 5th between the 2008 and 2012 elections, putting it in the top 10 percent of states.

Carson City authorities search for man with surgical mask who slashed tires in Smith's parking lot

Dispatch received the call at 5:48 p.m. of a white man with brown hair wearing a surgical mask and a creamed colored jacket walk through the parking lot of the Smith's on William Street, slashing tires. He then fled in the direction of the Carson City Community Center and library. One vehicle had its tires slashed, said Carson City Sheriff's Office Sgt. Earl Mays.

Motorcycle crash north of Virginia City claims life of Fallon man

James Edward Cooper, 67, died from injuries after being taken by Care Flight to Renown Medical Center in Reno.
NHP troopers were dispatched at 12:50 p.m. to the crash on State Route 341 approximately 2 miles north of Virginia City, said Trooper Dave Gibson.
Two dead, one critically injured after driver going wrong way crashes on I-580 in Reno
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 04/07/2014 - 10:04amAlcohol is believed to be a factor in a wrong-way vehicle crash that killed two people early Saturday morning on Interstate 580 near Plumb Lane in Reno, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol. A 70-year-old woman is in critical condition at Renown Medical Center in Reno.
Kenneth C. Lee, 23, of Reno and Hans-Hartmut Kaesgen, 71, of Berea, Ohio died as a result of the crash reported at 3:26 a.m., said NHP Trooper Karen Garretson.

Salt Lake pushed two runs across the plate in the seventh inning to rally for a 4-3 victory over the Western Nevada College Wildcats on Saturday afternoon in Salt Lake City.

The group will focus its attention on habitat improvements, increasing pheasant populations, and youth outdoor participation in the Great Basin area.
The Great Basin chapter was drawn to Pheasants Forever’s unique model, which empowers county and local chapters with the responsibility to determine how 100 percent of their locally raised conservation funds will be spent.

The bell was graciously donated by the Brewery Arts Center last year and we are anxiously waiting for it to ring again this spring. St. Teresa of Avila was established in Carson City in 1858.

Nevada political parties grow March registration; Carson City GOP figures remain firm

Carson City Republicans still hold the share of registered voters, with 11,738 in March compared to 8,775 registered Democrats; 4,389 non-partisan; 1,547, Independent American; 226, other; and 223 Libertarian.
Carson City man arrested at motel on suspicion of felony parole and probation violation
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 04/01/2014 - 8:45amA 27-year-old Carson City man was arrested early Tuesday morning and placed on a felony parole and probation hold after allegedly violating conditions of his alternative sentencing agreement.
Mark Edward Davis was booked into Carson City Jail on the charge after being arrested at a motel in the 2700 block of South Carson Street. A Reno man was also arrested on a misdemeanor warrant.
