Something amazing is happening in our Carson City! Once again our community is rising up to help a neighbor in need.
As many of you may have heard a favorite, downtown restaurant, Sassafras is being forced to relocate.
The word spread throughout our community and one question was being asked “how can we help”
I had a chance to attend a meeting of volunteers from the community to help organize a benefit to help save our Sassafras. I then asked Owner, Scott Owen Doerr, what he wanted people to know?

Nationally recognized western singer-songwriter duo to perform in Carson City

Tom May and Chris Kennedy are scheduled to perform in Carson City, NV at The Brewery Arts Center performance hall, 511 West King St., Friday, July 25 at 7:30P p.m.

Tom May is a folksinger, songwriter and author who has been touring, performing, and recording for over forty years. He is also the host/producer of the radio show, “River City Folk,” heard on dozens of radio stations weekly since 1985 and on XM Satellite Radio throughout the country.

'Ghost of Mark Twain' arrives at BAC Saturday as part of Nevada's Sesquicentennial celebration

The Brewery Arts Center in Carson City continues its July lineup of entertainment venues as part of its celebration of summer and Nevada's 150th year statehood with a visit from Mark Twain this Saturday.

What would Nevada's Sesquicentennial be without the musings of the legendary Mark Twain? Hear the Ghost of Mark Twain through the modern-day transporter McAvoy Layne on Saturday, July 19, 7:30 p.m. with special guests Shiloh.

Team entry deadline nears for Carson City short film competition

The Citywide Short Film Competition, hosted by the Brewery Arts Center, Carson City Access Television and the Nevada Arts Council, is less than two weeks away. Teams must register by 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 23. It is free to enter and participate.

Organizers of this second annual event are looking for budding filmmakers of all ages. The week-long short film competition runs from noon Friday, July 25 to noon, Friday Aug. 1.

Wild West Murder Mystery theater train and barbecue aboard historic V&T July 18 and Aug. 15

Hijinks on the Comstock with a twist comes to Carson City this summer with "Where is the Gold?" a Wild West melodrama and murder mystery dinner set aboard a vintage Virginia and Truckee Railroad steam engine train, July 18 and August 15.

"Where is the Gold?" produced by the Brewery Arts Center will entertain with plenty of Comstock legend and lore intertwined with spellbinding whodunit mystery. The audience will be invited to help the cast of characters solve the mystery of who stole the gold, and who is responsible for the death of Mr. Big.

BAC celebrates Nevada's sesquicentennial with July concert lineup

The Brewery Arts Center in Carson City has three entertainment venues lined up for July, including folk artists, pianists and Mark Twain as part of its celebration of summer and Nevada's 150th year statehood.

World renowned pianist Louis Landon with special guest Dallas Smith, direct from the Reno Jazz Orchestra, will appear in a one-night-only performance Wednesday, July 16.

Carson City Ghost Walking Tour -Summer Evening Tours 2014

The Carson City Ghost Walk and Ghost Walking Tours are a delightfully spooky and enjoyable way to experience Carson City’s Victorian Era and diverse history. Hear about lingering spirits of the past centuries, haunted and paranormal stories. This is a spirit lead, guided walking tour of the downtown district’s westside historic homes and businesses. This 90-minute guided walking tour leaves rain or shine.

BAC, Carson City Access TV launch second annual Short Film Competition

The Brewery Arts Center and Carson City Access Television are looking for budding filmmakers of all ages for its second citywide short film competition.

The week-long City Wide Short Film Competition runs from noon Friday, July 25 to noon, Friday Aug. 1. Registration is required by 5 p.m. July 23. It is free to enter and participate.

Here's how it works: On Friday, July 25, filmmaking teams will pick a film genre and be given three "ingredients" that must be used in the film.

'Greetings From Tintab' Reno Handbell Ensemble performs Saturday at Brewery Arts Center

Tintabulations, a community handbell ensemble from Reno, presents their spring concert series to raise money for their first national tour to North Carolina.

Tintabulations will be performing “Greetings From Tintab” on Saturday, June 14, 11 a.m. in the blackbox theater of the Brewery Arts Center. Their concert weaves stories from the group’s past with modern bell literature.

Carson City leadership 'boot camps' designed to inspire change in organizations

Carson City area leaders in business, government and the nonprofit sector are encouraged to enroll in a series of workshops this month designed to inspire, energize and bring about positive, efficient paradigm changes to organizations.

Led by award-winning humanitarian and motivational speaker Ian Hill, the "boot camps" will be held June 16, 20 and 23 at the BRIC building, 108 E. Proctor Street in Carson City. Enrollment ranges from $199 to $249. A portion of proceeds will go to the Carson City Court Appointed Special Advocates and the Brewery Arts Center.

It's Your City with Ian Hill talks about upcoming Leadership Boot Camp

Ian Hill of Carson City provides an update on the Leadership Boot Camp being made available by The Changing Point. Proceeds from this program will benefit CASA of Carson City and the Brewery Arts Center.

The Boot Camps will be held June 12 and June 16, 2014 at the The BRIC building, 108 E. Proctor Street in Carson City. Go here for more information and to sign up.

Dancing Drum performance Friday at Brewery Arts Center

Seeliger Elementary and the Brewery Arts Center have partnered to bring "Dancing Drum," an interactive performance on Friday that combines high energy drumming with abundant opportunities for audience participation.

Students from Seeliger Elementary School will join New Orleans-based Dancing Drum's Steve Campbell during a section of the performance.

Be prepared for lots of great music, outstanding musicianship and a fun way to kick off your Memorial Day weekend. Tickets are $5. The show begins 7:00pm in the BAC Performance Hall, 511 W King Street in Carson City.

Muscle Powered’s Westside Cruiser Ride

It’s time once again for Muscle Powered’s annual Westside Cruiser Ride! This event keeps growing each year, and with the weather forecast showing temperatures in the 80s on Wednesday, we hope to get the biggest turnout yet. This year’s ride will start and finish at the Brewery Arts Center at the corner of Minnesota and King Street. Signups for the ride begin at 6:00 PM, the ride starts rolling around 6:30 PM.

Plans for Carson City Jazz and Beyond Music Festival underway

Get ready for an exciting summer of music when the Jazz and Beyond Carson City Music Festival takes place, August 1-17. The festival, which began in 2004, is presented by the Mile High Jazz Band Assoc.

Last year, the Jazz and Beyond Festival featured 60 performances and over 100 performers, and organizers hope to match that accomplishment this year. Most performances are presented free to the public. Beyond jazz, the festival included bluegrass, blues, mariachi, and more.

Anti-bullying campaign founder says issue is epidemic that requires community solutions

The statistic is staggering: 56 percent of school children, grades 5-12, or about 13 million nationwide say they've been a target of bullies at one time or another.

It's a problem that affects communities, families and schools. Tackling the issue takes a commitment from parents, teachers, law enforcement, elected officials and children themselves. That was the message delivered Saturday at workshop in Carson City presented by the founding members of the national nonprofit group Teach Anti-Bullying, Inc.

Capital Crossfire: The Margins Tax – Reckless Taxation or a Must for Education?

Capital Crossfire takes on the Margins Tax this week as Karl Neathammer and Shelly Aldean speak with guest Karen Griffin with Faiss Foley Warren, a Las Vegas public relations firm that specializes in government relations.
The three discuss the Nevada Margins Tax Initiative and its predicted impacts on business, education and future economic growth.

The issue will be Question 3 in Nevada's November general-election ballot. If it is approved by a majority of voters, the tax would impose a 2 percent tax on a business' margins after allowable deductions are taken. Only businesses that gross $1 million annually or more will be subject to the tax.

National anti-bullying group to give May 10 talk in Carson City

Carson City will host a presentation on bullying by a Philadelphia-based nonprofit agency that works around the country with educators, parents and law enforcement.

Members of Teach Anti-Bullying, Inc. will discuss what many say is a national crisis affecting communities across the country. The Saturday, May 10 presentation, Bullying: The Silent Threat, will be presented from 10 a.m. to noon at the Brewery Arts Center, 449 West King Street, in Carson City.

St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church Bell ready to ring this spring

Shaheen Beauchamp Builders is setting the original 1873 St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Community church bell in its new home on Lompa Lane in Carson City.

The bell was graciously donated by the Brewery Arts Center last year and we are anxiously waiting for it to ring again this spring. St. Teresa of Avila was established in Carson City in 1858.
