Heading into Tuesday, August 13, there's a galaxy of events lined up, beginning at midnight with a meteor shower watch party at WNC's Jack C. Davis Observatory. When the sun arrives there's fitness events, a book talk at the Nevada State Library and Archives, outdoor Carson City jazz festival happenings at Comma Coffee and Bob McFadden Plaza, family movie night at the library and more. It was gathering for the books and the sky. The Carson City Library concluded its Summer Learning Challenge on Saturday by throwing a party. The get-together celebrated youth participating in library activities that focused on space and science themes throughout summer.

The children’s section of the Carson City Library is made to be inviting. Brightly colored rugs and furniture are set against the backdrop of a playful mural of the Kennedy’s Children’s corner. But there’s one problem: The shelving.

Nevada Humanities will welcome author Willy Vlautin at a series of events throughout northern Nevada during the month of September. Mr. Vlautin is the author of Don’t Skip Out On Me, a 2019 pick for Nevada Reads—a statewide, public book club offered by Nevada Humanities. Nevada Reads invites Nevadans to read selected works of literature and to come together in their communities to share ideas and perceptions inspired by the book club selections.

Did you ever want to create really cool things out of books? Once read, they sit on a shelf and start to collect dust. Why not learn what Debbie and Rachael of “My Thousand Words” book sculptures and make them into beautiful art!

This course will teach you to make some amazing holiday creations out of books, including trees and ornaments. You'll even learn how to light up your creations! In addition to the $25 registration fee, a $40 supply fee is due to the instructor at the start of the course.

Carson High School alum Teri Case has done it again. Her second novel, "In the Doghouse: A Couple's Breakup from Their Dog's Point of View," has won its first award: The National Indie Excellence Award for Fiction.

Joyce M. Cox, author of Arcadia Publishing books on Sparks, Washoe County, and the upcoming "Behind the Arch, The Story of Reno, Nevada’s Unique Chamber of Commerce," will be the featured speaker for the August Archives Appetizer brown bag lunch in Carson City.

As we head into the final stretch of the week, events around the Carson City region are lined up for the next three days, including museum activities, outdoor concerts, a car cruise Friday at Carson Mall, athletic events, a Carson High School class of 1979 reunion, the Taste of Downtown on Saturday and much more.

Samuel Langhorne Clemens was born in Florida, Missouri on November 30, 1835. Mark Twain was born in Carson City, Nevada on February 3, 1863.

Though most know this is one and the same person, the name Mark Twain and his writings, tall tales and witticisms are known throughout the world while Samuel Clemens has been reduced to a trivia question.

Come and learn how to make book art jewelry from the artists of My Thousand Words, Rachael and Debbie Lambin. There are two classes offered, pick which one you like. Hope to see you!

The events are Friday, July 26 from 6:30 to 830 p.m. and Saturday, July 27, 2-4pm at Western Nevada College.

Students will be learning to make jewelry from books and magazines and enjoying wearing beautiful recycled jewelry that doesn't look like it is recycled at all.

Rusty Goe has spent much of his professional life on a deep dive into the history of the U.S. Mint in Carson City. He’s written multiple books on the subject and spent thousands of hours in research, getting to know the people who worked there 150 years ago.

New York Times bestselling author and Holocaust historian Max Wallace will be in Lake Tahoe to talk about his new book, In the Name of Humanity: The Secret Deal to End the Holocaust, on July 28, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. at Chabad at Lake Tahoe.

The book details an audacious scheme by a rescue committee of Swiss Orthodox Jews led by a remarkable woman named Recha Sterbuch.
