The Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition has launched a multimedia education campaign to promote safe bicycling for Tahoe visitors and residents.

“We hope these safety tips help ensure people enjoy riding their bicycles at Lake Tahoe,” said Curtis Fong, vice president of the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition. “This is the greatest and most beautiful place in the world to ride a bike, and we want to help make sure that bicyclists are aware of safe riding practices when bicycling on roadways or bike paths around Lake Tahoe.”

Last weekend the cyclists ruled our city, but now the hot-rodders are king of the road. The Rockabilly Riot is jam-packed with activities all over town: the races and booths at Mills Park; a street dance at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar; a tattoo show in the Community Center; a free concert at Gold Dust West; and Burlesque at the Nugget. While the inaugural Epic Rides Carson City Off-Road mountain bike race series may have been a boon to the local economy, some downtown businesses struggled to stay out of the red last weekend because of what they felt were excessive road closures for the first-time event.

Planes, trains, and bicycles are the theme of this Fathers’ Day weekend. Epic Rides has taken over downtown with booths, bikes, beer, music, and more. The Carson City Airport is hosting their annual Fly-in and Open house, complete with hot air balloon rides. World War II aviation buffs won’t want to miss the Wings of Freedom tour at the Minden Airport. Steampunk meets Steam trains at the Nevada Railroad Museum. When their boys were little, Brian and Katie McRae would pull them along in trailers behind their bikes before upgrading to a tagalong. When the boys outgrew that, Brian would wrap a rubber tube around their bike stems and tow them behind his own bike.

It's Friday, Carson City. Epic Rides descends on our valley, and I must say, it is one epic event. Beware that quite a few of our downtown streets will be closed and there will be bikes everywhere. Live music can be found at a stage on Musser Street, the Brewery Arts Center, and most all of our casinos. A huge welcome goes out to those in town for the Annual Pow Wow at Stewart Indian School. Don't forget that Fathers' Day is Sunday: plenty of our local shops have something just perfect for the man in your life.

Three days of thrill-seeking, mountain biking adventure and plenty of capital city hospitality and entertainment will kick off the inaugural Carson City Off-Road Epic Ride series beginning Friday and lasting through the weekend.

Ready for Mad Max on bikes? Muscle Powered encourages you to ride your bike down to see "Turbo Kid" Thursday, June 16, 6 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall. It’s getting to be that time of year again when dirt bike and ATV (all-terrain vehicle) riders head out to explore and enjoy the great outdoors. In doing so though, a reminder, riding your dirt bike or ATV on the streets is not legal as they are designated “Off road use only” vehicles.

As our weather begins to warm, we are going to see more and more bicyclists on the roadways around Carson City. As a motorist this means that you must pay extra attention as you drive down the back streets and main access roads that connect the city.

The works of four Carson City artists were recognized Monday in a statewide art contest using recyclable material.
Student artists Stella Thornton and Jessica Preston, and adult artists Lisa Sheppard and Emily J. Cervi were listed as having either placed or received honorable mentions as part of the contest to recognize America Recycles Day.

The Bubba Love Sponge Foundation and a national bicycle organization, in cooperation with KRZQ 104.1 FM Reno and law enforcement across the region presented the Carl Howell family two checks Tuesday as part of the Bikes for Badges motorcycle run held in October.

A fundraiser by The Downtown Coin Club for the family of fallen Carson City Sheriff’s Deputy Carl Howell raised $540. The donation, along with a custom-made plaque, was presented to the Carson City Sheriff’s Office Friday.

The money was raised through the generosity of Downtown Coin customers, and matched by the Downtown Carson City Coin Club, said Downtown Coin owner Dan Wilson.

Manuel Souza is bringing back his Smackdown Bull Riding tour to Carson City on Saturday — this time as a fundraiser for Deputy Carl Howell, who was killed in the line of duty Aug. 15.

“I think it’s the right thing for us to do as people,” said Souza, who is working in cooperation with the Carson City Sheriff’s Deputy Association. “Police officers do a thankless job. But they’re always there when you need them, aren’t they? I think it’s important we do this.”

A fundraiser will be held Sunday for the family of fallen Carson City Sheriff’s Office Deputy Carl Howell at the 5 Clover Ranch in the Carson Valley.

The all-day fundraiser will feature special guest Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt and a video appearance by actor Joe Mantegna, of "Criminal Minds" and "The Simpsons." Headlining band will be Lavish Green. One hundred percent of the profit proceeds from the benefit will be presented to the Howell family.
