Carson City Safety First: Spring brings recreation cyclists, children riding in the streets
As our weather begins to warm, we are going to see more and more bicyclists on the roadways around Carson City. As a motorist this means that you must pay extra attention as you drive down the back streets and main access roads that connect the city.
Be sure to pay close attention in the residential areas as children will be riding their bikes and you can never predict when they may unintentionally come out onto the roadway in front of you. When you see children slow down and be prepared to stop in the event the unexpected happens.
Recreational cyclists will be on the roadways also and will sometimes be in groups. Remember when passing any bicycle you must if possible move to an adjacent lane. If not, you must pass with at least three feet of clearance between your car and the bicycle. Safe passing is the motorists responsibility (NRS 484B.270).
Cyclists have responsibilities also when riding on the streets. You must follow the rules of the road just as if you were a motor vehicle. This means, stopping at stop signs, riding the same direction as traffic, obeying traffic signals, etc.
In addition, always ride on the right and as far to the right as practicable. Use hand signals for turns and stops. Ride at least three feet away from parked cars. LISTEN for cars approaching from the side or rear. Don’t follow cars closely or ride in their blind spot. Always be prepared to stop. Although not required, always wear a safety helmet.
At night, lighting is required for both the front and rear of your bike. Reflective tape and spoke reflectors add to night time visibility so that motorists can see you. It is both the motorists and the cyclist’s responsibility to watch out for one another.
Being a driver and a cyclist involved in a crash can be a traumatic and expensive event. Let’s work together to reduce vehicle versus bicycle crashes. Share the road and practice safe and courteous driving and riding habits.
