10 Tips for Bicycle Commuting

Bike to Work Week starts May 12th! Many cyclists around the country will be taking to the streets next week to use their bicycles for their daily transportation needs. While many of us are pretty comfortable riding bikes for recreational use, we tend to do these activities in ideal locations away from traffic where there isn’t much to think about besides having a good time. Bicycle commuting and other urban errands, though, will most likely take us through areas that are out of our normal comfort zone.

Public safety column: Moped, motor scooter riders equally responsible for sharing the road

Recently, I have received many requests for information in regards to riding scooters on city streets and so I am providing an update to my September 2013 column.

Motor scooters and mopeds have become common on the streets of Carson City. I am regularly asked if mopeds and motor scooters are legal as many are unregistered. Yes, some scooters may be operated upon the roadways however, there are restrictions. First, you cannot operate the scooter in a travel lane where the speed zone exceeds the scooters maximum speed.

Fat Bikes!

I still remember my first mountain bike ride. It was back in 1985 at my local BMX shop. The owner showed us the new bike he just got, a big-wheeled, fat-tired bike with low gearing. Our small-wheeled BMX bikes were limited to firmer terrain, and you had push them up the steeper hills.

Winter Bicycle Commuting

Sometimes people ask me jokingly, “You have snow tires for that thing?”. I think most people assume it’s time to put the bikes away when the snow starts falling. When I reply, “Yes, actually I do. I have a set of studded snow tires with 240 studs per tire!”, they seem pretty surprised. Not only because such a thing exists, but that you’d want to ride in the snow in the first place. Like any other winter activity though, winter biking can be fun with the right gear.

Outdoors with Don Q: Head to Apple Hill for fresh fruit, veggies and wine selections

Six local ladies just returned from an enjoyable, day-long visit to Apple Hill. They were: Mary Bottoms, Patricia Isaman, Mary Morris and Elaine Quilici of Carson City plus Emily Bradburn and Lorraine Scholes of Dayton.

The ladies were six of the passengers on a special, once-a-year, chartered bus that traveled to Apple Hill from the Carson Senior Center.

If you are a newcomer to our area or if you have never been there, fall is a great time of the year to visit Apple Hill. And, if you are a newcomer, you are probably wondering, “What and where in the heck is Apple Hill?”

Motor scooters being used more on Carson City streets

It seems that everywhere we look as we are driving down the streets of Carson City, we see mopeds, or as they are more commonly known, scooters being operated on the roadways. I am asked time and time again if this is legal as many are unregistered.

Yes, some scooters may be operated upon the roadways however, there are restrictions. For example, a scooter need not be registered nor insured if the motor is under 50cc (cubic centimeters) and the vehicle does not exceed 30 mph on a level roadway.
