May 16th was Muscle Powered’s annual Bike to Work Week cruiser ride, and this year we had record attendance. We estimated around 100 riders this year, double the previous record of about 50. Thank you nice weather!

First Flume Trail Ride of the Year

Flume Trail Mountain Bikes officially opened for business on May 12th this year. The light winter snowfall has nearly melted off the lower trails, giving access to Marlette Lake and the Flume Trail. A few of us rode the Flume on Saturday, May 12th to go check it out.

Bike to Work Week Party at the Firkin and Fox

It’s great to see the bicycle miles and trips rack up from our Corporate Challengers! If you haven’t been keeping track, go check out the daily totals posted on the Muscle Powered blog. We’re going to have a big party at the Firkin and Fox on Friday night the 18th to celebrate everyone’s hard work this week. In addition to announcing the winners of the Corporate Challenge, we’re going to have live music from Notch 8, and a raffle with prizes you don’t want to miss out on.

It’s almost time for Muscle Powered’s annual Bike to Work Week cruiser ride! This Wednesday, May 16th, bring the whole family down to Telegraph Square for a slow-paced fun ride around the quiet streets of Carson City’s west side. Sign-in for the ride at 6:15pm, ride starts around 6:30pm.

Bike to Work Week Begins!

Today is May 14th, the First day of Bike to Work Week 2012. The weather looks fantastic all week, so we will most definitely see the bicycle commuter corporate challengers rack of the miles and trips! Bike Movie Night at Capitol Automotive

Saturday May 12th at 5:30PM is Bike To Work Week Movie Night hosted by Capitol Automotive! Ride your bikes down at 5:30 pm for FREE pizza and beverages, and enjoy two fun bicycle themed movies. Marcus does a great job at converting his garage into a little theater, and there is plenty of secure bike parking within view of the seating.

Bicycle Maintenance Class at Bike Habitat

The Bike Habitat will be giving a free class this Wednesday the 9th at 6PM. The topic of the class is “Home Maintenance for your Bicycle”. Learn how to keep your bike running safely and efficiently between bike shop tune ups. This clinic will cover both MTN and Road Bikes.

Legends of the West Bike & Car Fest

Legends of the West Bike & Car Fest is coming to Carson City on June 30, 2012. The planning for this event is going fast and furious and we are anticipating a great second annual show. This event is being held on June 30, 2012, under the auspices of the Carson City Downtown Business Association and is being managed by Arlington Group Events. The CCSO 9th Annual Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge will take place at Legends. See these highly trained men and women compete for glory in slow motion!

Bike Movie Night at Sassafras

If you haven’t been to a movie night at the Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint in downtown Carson City, you’re missing out on a good time! Every Monday night they show a fun film in the plan:b lounge area, and you can order great food and drinks while you enjoy the movie.  Free popcorn, and movie commentary / trivia from Mike the host.  This week the movie will have a bicycle theme, and you are are encouraged to ride your bike to the show!

Sheriff's Showdown

Show season is finally upon us. Freaks of Nature would like to request your presence at the 1st Annual Sheriff's Showdown. Held at Harley Davidson of Carson City. Registration is from 9-11am and trophies at 3pm. This event is Open to all makes and models, including bikes! Registration is $15. There will be Live Music, Food provided by Dickie's BBQ, Art by Air Face Painting by Lynzie, Fresh Lemonade, Les Schwab Tires and many more vendors. We even brought out the bounce house for the kids. And don't forget to buy your raffle tickets, as we will have tons of prizes to be won!

Lake Tahoe Adventure Motorcycle Ride and Rendezvous dates set

The first Lake Tahoe Motorcycle Adventure Ride and Rendezvous is slated for August 23-26 on the beautiful South Shore of Lake Tahoe (Tahoe South). The event includes both off road and pavement rides, evening social events, entertainment, guest speakers, vendors and Tahoe summer activities. The event welcomes all makes of bikes and riders.

Outdoors with Don Q: Memories from an unforgettable six week adventure

Bob and Lorraine (my cousin) Scholes of Dayton plus Elaine and I just returned from a six week vacation trip to Italy, Sicily and Switzerland. It was the Scholes’ second trip to Italy and our first-ever trip.
Lorraine’s father was born in Ponte Buggianese and my Dad was born in Lucca, and we both wanted to visit where our roots began.
We left on August 30, flew from Reno to Denver to Montreal to Rome and then returned from Rome to Zurich to San Francisco to Reno on October 12. Here are a bunch of our memories:

Working together toward safer streets

As many of you know, May is National Bike Month. Here in Carson City, several events and rides were held, capped by Bike To Work Week from May 16-20 and the celebration on the 20th outside the Firkin & Fox. As reported, about 150 people came by to visit, enjoy others’ bikes, and get a chance to win a raffle prize. The Nevada Legislature passed two bills in its current session that benefit cyclists (see sidebar below).

Dayton-area children in need of books, bikes and toys this Christmas

The Healthy Communities Coalition is collecting new toys and used or new books for teens and children in our area for those who may otherwise go without gifts at Christmas.

New unwrapped gifts and gently used books can be dropped off at the Dayton Community Center at 170 Pike Street, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Christmas Eve.

NHP provides safety strategy as Street Vibrations rolls through Northern Nevada

With tens of thousands of motorcyclists in Reno, Carson City, Virginia City and Tahoe for Street Vibrations this week, the Nevada Highway Patrol has developed a safety strategy of tips for bikers and motorists.

The idea is to reduce distractions by keeping a sharp focus on all motor vehicles on the road, said NHP Trooper Chuck Allen. Roads throughout Northern Nevada will be filled with motorcyclists and motorists attending the events in Reno, Carson City and Virginia City. Here's a breakdown of what drivers should keep in mind:

Sea to Shining Sea riders to bicycle through Carson City

A team of athletes, many of whom are wounded Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, will leave from Golden Gate Bridge on Saturday for World T.E.A.M. Sports’ inaugural bike trek across America called Sea to Shining Sea. The group will arrive in Carson City on May 28 on their way to their Virginia Beach, Va., destination.
