We have a small, comfortable home, built in the late 1940's, located in the older west side of Carson City, and we recently discovered that what is considered good news for some is actually bad news for others in our particular neighborhood. Let me explain what I mean:

Thursday, May 8 was my birthday, and Elaine had arranged two unforgettable, secret surprises for me as a present.

The Quilici Cabin is located on a steep hillside between Portola and Davis Lake in Plumas County, California, and we like to go there as often as we can to enjoy the accommodations, scenery, wildlife and peace and quiet.

Carson City Rotary held its annual Rotary at Work Day at the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada on the Saturday after Earth Day.

This year the Rotary replanted three large garden beds so the children who visit can plant flowers and vegetables. In addition, interested young adults and children can learn how to care for, maintain and harvest plants in Northern Nevada throughout the complete gardening season.

Going into the final week of the Scenic West Athletic Conference baseball season, the race for first place is finally clear.

Western Nevada College needs to sweep a four-game series from College of Southern Idaho to win the regular-season title outright for the first time since 2011. The SWAC champion serves as the host for the May 7-10 Region 18 Tournament.

Prestige Care and Prestige Senior Living, leaders in skilled nursing and rehabilitation care, announced plans Tuesday to join with Carson Tahoe Health to expand senior care services and offer comprehensive memory care to Carson City residents and their families.

As a first step in the relationship, the organizations will develop a community with 40 units for memory care services on the Carson Tahoe Specialty Medical Center campus. Construction will begin in 2014.

Officials from Carson Tahoe Health announced a new partnership Thursday with Salt Lake City-based University of Utah Health Care that will extend the resources of a premier academic medical center to Carson City, Douglas County, Dayton and the surrounding communities.

The agreement formalizes a long tradition of collaboration between the two health care providers.

More than 8 million people in the U.S. suffer from non-healing wounds, which are often impeded by such diseases and conditions as diabetes, obesity, aging and the late effects of radiation therapy.

The newly expanded Carson Tahoe Center for Wound Healing is located on the second floor of the Carson Tahoe Specialty Medical Center at 775 Fleischmann Dr. in Carson City. The center now provides the latest advanced treatments to help these patients heal and with a faster recovery times.

A new furniture store in Carson City — The Missing Piece — opened this summer and offers a 3,600 square-foot showroom of pre-owned furniture at affordable prices. Located at 1800 East William Street, the Missing Piece is owned by Kelly and Donna Nolan of Carson City.

Opening the furniture store had been on the minds of the couple for a few years. Donna used to work at a furniture store in Carson City and Kelly builds and sells small furniture as a hobby.

Elaine and I just returned from a memorable visit to a very special place: It was our second visit to that remote, far-north locale. The first time was about 15 years ago, when Elaine and her late husband Jim McGee and I went there to film Canadian fishing experiences for our weekly TV show.
