A pennant race is a pennant race no matter if it's for first or second place.
 
And for the Western Nevada College baseball team, the race for second place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference went down to the wire. College of Southern Nevada was finally helping out the Wildcats after losing the first three games of its series at Salt Lake Community College.

The Western Nevada College baseball team took care of business on Friday.

Kyle Conwell was happy to be reunited with his Western Nevada College baseball "family" this week. The feeling was certainly mutual on Friday afternoon when the Wildcats came together to bang out 29 hits while sweeping Colorado Northwestern Community College 11-2 and 15-1 during a Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader at John L. Harvey Field.

A chance at winning the Scenic West Athletic Conference regular season title seems to be slipping away, but Western Nevada College baseball coach D.J. Whittemore isn't giving up hope, yet.
 
"It's not over until it's over," said Whittemore about his team split of a doubleheader at Salt Lake Community College on Saturday. "Stranger things have happened."

While the Western Nevada College softball team couldn't pull off another upset against one of the nation's top teams, the Wildcats came away from this weekend's series against College of Southern Idaho knowing it could compete with one of the Scenic West Athletic Conference's elite clubs.

CSI swept a doubleheader against WNC on Saturday in Twin Falls, Idaho, winning the opener 6-3 and the nightcap 14-7. WNC was tied with CSI 3-3 going into the bottom of the fifth inning in the opener and led 7-5 in the nightcap.

The Scenic West Athletic Conference baseball series between Western Nevada College and Salt Lake Community College has been rescheduled for Saturday and Sunday.

Lake Tahoe-based McCall Realty (www.mccalltahoe.com) will donate all its profits through 2010 to five area children’s non-profit organizations: Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), South Lake Tahoe Police Activities League (PAL), South Lake Tahoe Women’s Center, and Tahoe Youth and Family Services.

Despite losing three of four games last weekend at College of Southern Idaho to fall two games behind College of Southern Nevada in the race for the Scenic West Athletic Conference regular season title, WNC coach D.J. Whittemore is still holding out hope his team can catch the Coyotes with eight games left.
"We're not out of it yet," Whittemore said. "Obviously we've got to take care of our business and we need a little help. We're still in the hunt for the title."

Twin Falls, Idaho, has always been a difficult place to play for the Western Nevada College baseball team.
Saturday was no exception, as the Wildcats had to settle for a split against College of Southern Idaho during their Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader. CSI won the opener 3-1 before the Wildcats came back to take the nightcap 2-1 at Skip Walker Field.

It won't show up in the box score or the Scenic West Athletic Conference standings, however, the Western Nevada College softball team possibly turned in its best performance of the season on Friday despite losing both ends of a doubleheader against College of Southern Nevada.

The Western Nevada College baseball team sustained a crash that will be tough to recover from on this day in the Scenic West Athletic Conference race after being swept at College of Southern Idaho, losing the opener 2-1 and the nightcap 3-0.
WNC (34-11) fell to 22-8 in the SWAC and if College of Southern Nevada swept Colorado Northwestern Community College as expected on Friday, also fell out of first place in the conference, one game behind the Coyotes.

WNC set for final home series this weekend against instate rival Southern Nevada

J.T. Cockerill of Carson City wound up tied for second-place as he helped California State University-Satnislaus to second-place as a team at the California Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Golf Tournament on Monday and Tuesday in Paso Robles, Calif.
Cockerill, a junior, finished at 4-under par 212 (68-71-73) during the tournament held at Hunter Ranch Golf Course. He tied teammate Teddy Schrier for second-place on the individual leader board.

There's still plenty of buzz over what happened this past weekend at John L. Harvey Field when the Western Nevada College baseball team pulled off a four-game sweep of College of Southern Nevada.

It's been a long road back, but the Western Nevada College baseball team has now gained an inside track to the Scenic West Athletic Conference regular season championship with three weeks to go.

Former Western Nevada College star Brian Barnett was named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week for his performance this past week for the University of Nevada baseball team against Seattle University and St. Mary's.

To beat any conference leader, a team needs to bring its "A" Game to the field. Make that "A-plus" if you want to beat a team that is ranked No. 2 in the nation, and even then, it still doesn't hurt to have a little luck on your side.

A daunting task awaits the Western Nevada College baseball team when instate rival College of Southern Nevada comes to John L. Harvey Field this weekend.
CSN is the nation's No. 1 ranked team and has a three-game lead over the Wildcats in the race for the Scenic West Athletic Conference regular season title. The first place Coyotes are 21-3 in the SWAC while WNC (30-9) is 18-6.
 

Offense was the name of the game during the University of Nevada-New Mexico State baseball series and nothing changed in the final game on Sunday afternoon when the two Western Athletic Conference teams battled to a 10-10 tie in Las Cruces, N.M.

Winning baseball games away from home in the Scenic West Athletic Conference is never an easy chore. And nothing came easy for Western Nevada College while taking both ends of its doubleheader against the College of Eastern Utah on Saturday.

Once again, Western Nevada College was one inning away from an important Scenic West Athletic Conference softball win. However, the Wildcats were unable to slam the door shut as North Idaho College rallied to score twice in the top of the seventh inning to pull out a 7-6 victory on Saturday afternoon. 

The University of Nevada jumped to a 7-1 lead after three innings but was unable to hold the lead, falling 11-7 to New Mexico State in the Western Athletic Conference opener for both schools on Friday in Las Cruces, N.M.

The North Idaho College softball team was downright offensive against Western Nevada College on Friday afternoon at Edmonds Sports Complex.

Now that the Western Nevada College baseball team has taken over second place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference, one could say that the Wildcats find themselves in a pennant race.
But WNC coach D.J. Whittemore isn't ready to declare his team is in a pennant race, yet. "It kind of feels like were chasing a ghost," said Whittemore about College of Southern Nevada.

The Western Nevada College softball team picked up a much needed win that likely kept its playoff hopes alive.
After losing the first three games in its series at Colorado Northwestern, the Wildcats pulled out a 4-3 win in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Saturday. WNC lost the opener 4-2.
WNC (5-29, 4-24) is now tied with Colorado Northwestern with four wins in the Scenic West Athletic Conference. WNC and Colorodo Northwestern finished 4-4 against each other in conference play.

WNC finished off a four-game sweep at Colorado Northwestern Community College on Saturday by winning both games of a doubleheader. The Wildcats won the opener 15-0 and then in a scheduled nine-inning game, had to score four runs in the ninth inning to pull out an 8-4 win.
The Wildcats (26-9) moved into second place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference after College of Southern Nevada took three of four games from Salt Lake Community College this weekend. WNC is 14-6 in the SWAC and trails CSN (17-3) by three games. Salt Lake fell to 12-7 in the SWAC.
  
 

Carson High remained in the top five in the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association's Award of Excellence standings after the winter sports season.
The Award of Excellence program rates the best overall high school sports programs in Nevada based on how well schools do in athletic competition, in academics and in sportsmanship. The sportsmanship portion of the points standings is added after the spring sports season.
 

While nothing can be taken for granted, there's no away around it. These are four wins the Western Nevada College baseball team is expected to pick up.
So when snow threatened to postpone one or both games on Friday at Colorado Northwestern Community College, the Wildcats had to be worried. These are wins that WNC needs in the Scenic West Athletic Conference and any games that are lost and not made up could obviously be costly in the SWAC race.
