Milestone reached in final stretch of Carson City freeway construction

The Nevada Department of Transportation has reached a milestone in construction of the final leg of the Carson City Freeway, with project work approximately 25 percent complete.

It is my pleasure to take over for Angila Golik as the new “Senator Square” column writer, which for me is right up there with winning an election, winning a game, and winning a prize in a contest all at the same time. Western Nevada College: 312 make Fall 2015 Dean’s List

Western Nevada College has named 312 students to the Fall 2015 Dean’s List. For consideration to WNC’s Dean’s List, students must complete at least 12 units during the semester and accumulate a grade point average of 3.50 or higher. Honorees are:

Senator Square: Honor Society holds winter blood drive; signups begin for Polar Plunge

National Honor Society is hosting its winter blood drive. It will take place on January 28 in the library from 7:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. It is open to community members.  Refreshments and a free cholesterol test is available with each donation. Carson City sheriff's arrest log: Man jailed for kicking officer after being told to leave bar

A 39-year-old Minden man was arrested Friday night on a felony battery charge after resisting and allegedly kicking an officer when he was asked to leave a North Carson Street bar because he was intoxicated and causing problems, a Carson City sheriff's deputy said.

NV Energy reports widespread power outages in Carson City due to high winds

UPDATE 6PM: NV Energy reports three outages with 16 customers without power as of 6 p.m., in Carson City. There's one power outage in Douglas County with 242 customers without power and 13 outages with 299 customers without power in Washoe County.

NV Energy reports more than 20 power outages around Carson City affecting more than 2,000 customers as of 4:50 p.m. Monday.

Community Leaders enjoy Reading Week at Bordewich Bray Elementary School

During the week of November 16-20, Bordewich Bray Elementary had a Fall Reading Week to promote literacy in the home, at school, and in the workplace. Mrs. Michele Cacioppo’s kindergarten class named their week “Read to Succeed” week.

I think the irony of the Ashley Madison hacking story is probably what prompted me to write this article about personal privacy. While a large number of people desire to keep their personal activities secret, it is amazing to compare the “small number of Ashley Madison users” to the enormous number of us who appear to be conducting much of our lives openly on the web through Facebook and many other sites.

After spending his 64th birthday with his closest family, and fulfilling his wish to live to 64 years of age and force his family to sing, “When I'm 64,” to him, Ron Gonzales, known to most as Gonzo, died at 2:33 a.m. August 14, after suffering from COPD for decades. He spent his last week pleasantly, able to read for the first time in several years after suffering deteriorating eyesight – he'd received a Kindle for his birthday. His last day was spent with his granddaughter and wife, having fun with those he loved.

Carson City sheriff's log: Man jailed after making threats at motel

A 70-year-old Carson City man was arrested Friday at a motel after he allegedly threatened people with knives, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
Ronald Bonds was arrested at 6:40 p.m. on a felony charge of assault with a deadly weapon after officers were called to the motel in the 1400 block of North Carson Street.

History Teacher of the Year tours Nevada State Prison site in Carson City

Ashley Hogan of Dayton, Nevada’s 2015 History Teacher of the Year, toured the old Nevada State Prison on Wednesday with her husband, Kelly, also a history teacher, courtesy of the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society.

“What better place to learn about early American and Nevada history than from a place that predated statehood by two years as did NSP,” said Tom Porada, a Society board member.

Carson City Sheriff’s arrest log: Stolen property search turns up many felony arrests

A 19 year-old Carson City man, Alejandro Rios-Geurrero was arrested Saturday at 5:12 p.m. in the 2100 block of Highway 50 East on suspicion of two felony counts of burglary.

Here are the graduates of Carson High School, class of 2015. Looking outward to their message left at C Hill, the class of more than 400 walked proudly Saturday through the Carson City CHS football field. With the turn of the tassel and throw of their mortarboards, the students turned high school graduates. Congratulations, class of 2015.

Dayton Elementary's Ashley Hogan named Nevada History Teacher of the Year

On Wednesday, May 20, Mrs. Ashley Hogan, a 6th grade teacher at Dayton Elementary School, was awarded the State of Nevada History Teacher of the Year from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.

As the state winner for Nevada, Mrs. Ashley Hogan receives a monetary prize, certificate of recognition, an archive of books and historical resources for her classroom, and recognition at a ceremony in Nevada. She is now vying for the National History Teacher of the Year award which will be chosen in the fall from 52 other state winners.

Western Nevada College to Graduate More than 500 at ceremony Monday in Carson City

Western Nevada College has announced that it will graduate 515 students for the 2014-15 academic year. The 2015 commencement ceremony will take place on Monday, May 18, 11 a.m. at the Marv Teixieira Pavilion in Mills Park, in Carson City.

The class of 2015 will receive 568 degrees and certificates.

Carson City sheriff's arrest log: Four jailed on felony burglary charges

Four people were arrested Sunday on felony burglary and drug charges after two attempted to steal more than $800 worth of merchandise from a Carson City Walmart store, fleeing security officers and then getting into a vehicle occupied by two that had backpacks of new merchandise with tags, ledgers, methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Arrested on felony charges were Ashley Dadey, 28, Jessica Sanchez, 23, Priscilla Denise Roches, 28, and Pablo Benito Martinez, 35.

Carson City weekend arrest log: Man jailed on sexual assault, lewdness with a child charges

A 25-year-old Carson City man was arrested Saturday 5:52 p.m. at Carson Tahoe Hospital on felony warrant charges alleging sexual assault on a minor and lewdness with a child under the age of 14, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
Arrested was Daniel James Sperske, a resident in the 1400 block of North Edmonds Drive. He was at the hospital being treated for an injury. Officers knew he had the warrants issued March 24 out of Carson City Justice Court and made the arrest there. Bail: $150,000.

Stolen art ring broken up in South Lake Tahoe, two in custody

Two men arrested in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday are facing several charges including forgery, conspiracy to commit a crime, first and second degree burglary and impersonation to make others liable.

Chad Anthony Galvan, 33, and Marcus Daniel Gamez, 35, were arrested by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department after four expensive works of art were purchased from Marcus Ashley Galleries using stolen identities.

WNC names 329 students to Fall Dean’s List

Western Nevada College has named 329 students to the Fall 2014 Dean’s List. For consideration to WNC’s Dean’s List, students must complete at least 12 units during the semester and accumulate a grade point average of 3.50 or higher.

For the first time, the Dean’s List includes students from WNC’s new Jump Start College, which offers high-achieving juniors and seniors from eight high schools in the region the opportunity to earn up to 48 college credits before graduating.

Carson City sheriff's arrest log for Monday

The following are the most recent arrests made by the Carson City Sheriff’s Office: A 25-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Sunday, 3:22 p.m. at Walmart in the 3200 block of Market Street for allegedly violating terms of her parole and probation agreement.
According to the arrest report, officers were called to the store in reference to a report of subjects stealing items.

Senator Square: Carson High staff and students lead by giving through the holidays

This is the season for giving. Our students and staff at CHS have big hearts. Many Carson High School clubs and teams adopted families from the Empire School District for the Christmas holiday. Carson City cheese maker among USDA grant recipients in Northern Nevada

Tahoe Cheese Company of Carson City is one of three area food producers to receive federal grant money to expand production and market their Northern Nevada products, the USDA announced Thursday. McCleary Ranch, north of Carson City in Washoe County and the Frey Ranch Estate Distillery of Fallon were also approved for Value-Added Producer Grants.
