Carson City weekend arrest log: Man jailed on sexual assault, lewdness with a child charges

A 25-year-old Carson City man was arrested Saturday 5:52 p.m. at Carson Tahoe Hospital on felony warrant charges alleging sexual assault on a minor and lewdness with a child under the age of 14, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
Arrested was Daniel James Sperske, a resident in the 1400 block of North Edmonds Drive. He was at the hospital being treated for an injury. Officers knew he had the warrants issued March 24 out of Carson City Justice Court and made the arrest there. Bail: $150,000.

In other arrests by the Carson City Sheriff's Office this weekend: A 47-year-old Carson City man, Rick Houghton, was arrested early Sunday on suspicion of his third domestic battery, a felony, after allegedly pushing and striking a woman while he was intoxicated.
The woman called for help from a Carson City convenience store after leaving an apartment in the 600 block of College Parkway, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
Officers observed a bruise with red marks under the woman’s right eye. She said she sustained them during the altercation. Officers spoke with Houghton, who said nothing happened and that he was going to bed. He was asked if he would provide a statement and Houghton said no, the arrest report states. He had no visible injuries. He was arrested at 3:24 a.m. on the felony charge of third offense domestic battery. Bail: $15,137.

— A 29-year-old Dayton woman, Heidi Marie Ketelaar, was arrested Sunday, 3:59 a.m. in the area of North Carson and William Street on a felony warrant charge of parole and probation violation. She’s being held without bail in lieu of a hearing.

— A 50-year-old Carson City woman, Mary Jean Bohannan, was arrested Saturday, 10:15 p.m. in the 100 block of Corbett Street on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance, possession of dangerous drugs without a prescription, and trafficking drugs. Officers made a traffic stop after attempting to contact her earlier in the evening regarding a contempt of court warrant she had for her arrest. In the traffic stop, a K9 was used to do a sniff of the vehicle, which alerted to five odors of narcotics. Officers found a baggie with methamphetamine and a baggie with several pills, including 10 Buprenophine Hydrochloride, 4 Clonzepam, 1 Diazepam and an unknown pill. Bail: $29,137.

— A 30-year-old Carson City man, Oswaldo Mariscal, was arrested Saturday, 6:16 p.m. on a felony parole and probation violation. He was stopped in the area of Airport Road after he failed to stop at a stop sign and found to be in violation of conditions after officers found beer in his vehicle. Part of his parole condition was that he not possess any alcohol. He is being held without bail pending a hearing.

Two people were arrested Saturday, 11:55 p.m. on felony drug charges following a traffic stop. According to the arrest report, officers made a traffic stop after observing a vehicle not having a functioning brake light. The officer spoke with the driver, James Detels, 60, who provide him with expired insurance.

He was asked to state the name of his passenger and he replied with a fake name, it was later determined. The passenger, Ashley Kirstin Harms, 28, gave the officer two names that were not hers, and could not produce any identification and did not know her Social Security number. When she was told she was facing arrest, she provided a real name, where it was learned she had a felony probation violation warrant for her arrest out of Fallon District Court.

A police K9 detected the presence of drug odor in the vehicle, and the officer conducted a search inside he found a scale with drug residue, several hypodermic needles, two baggies with methamphetamine, and several spoons.

Detels faces felony charges of harboring a fugitive, possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, having non functioning brake lights and no proof of insurance. Bail: $14,446. Harms faces the felony warrant charge, a parole and probation violation, and providing false identification to avoid prosecution, all felonies, and misdemeanor obstructing a peace officer and not wearing a seat belt. Bail: $20,479.

— A 28-year-old Carson City man, David Erin Baxley, was arrested Saturday, 12:46 p.m. in the area of Koontz Lane and South Carson Street on a felony drug possession charge, meth, and six misdemeanor charges: possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, contempt of court warrant, suspended driver’s license, no vehicle insurance, and driving on a suspended registration. The arrest was made following a traffic stop in which Baxley’s vehicle returned with a suspended registration during a license plate check. Bail: $6,860.

— A 22-year-old Carson City woman, Pazley Renee Lampkin, was arrested Friday, 2:24 p.m. in the 1900 block of North Carson Street on a felony charge of assault on a peace officer, and three misdemeanor charges: assault on a person over 60 years of age, petit larceny and disorderly conduct.

According to the arrest report, officers were called to CVS on a report of the woman stealing a bottle of Jack Daniels whiskey and then leaving the store. By the time officers arrived the woman had broken the bottle and was threatening customers in the parking lot. Officers spoke with her and described her demeanor as fluctuating between calm and compliant to yelling profanities and demanding that she be taken to jail.

An officer asked her about her mental health history and the woman became very upset, taking a fighting stance, yelling and attempting to flee. When the officers attempted to arrest her, she threw a punch into one of the officers, which he dodged. She was taken to jail. Bail: $21,661.

— A 46-year-old Carson City man was arrested Saturday, 12:08 p.m. in the 2200 block of South Carson Street on misdemeanor DUI and failure to maintain a lane of traffic. Officers conducted a traffic stop following a report to dispatch of vehicle with the driving possibly under the influence. The officer followed the vehicle and watched as it made a wide turn, nearly hitting a curb and then going into two lanes of traffic. The officer made the traffic stop and spoke with the driver and passenger. The driver told the officer he had two beers. He submitted to a preliminary breath test with a .233. Bail: $1,224.

A 33-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Saturday, 12:48 a.m. in the area of North Stewart and East King Street on misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence, and having a non-functioning headlamp. Bail: $1,209.

— A 30-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday, 2:35 p.m. in the area of Robinson and Carson streets on misdemeanor charges of obstructing a police officer and being an intoxicated pedestrian. According to the arrest report, an officer observed a female and two men in the area, with one of the men yelling at the woman and looking as though he was going to hit her.

The officer stopped and asked what they were doing and then asked them to sit on the sidewalk. The three began to argue with the officer and didn’t comply with his requests to sit down on the sidewalk. The 30-year-old suspect, who was intoxicated, positioned himself in front of the officer and clinched his fists. The officer detained the man, who was yelling profanities at him. Officers spoke with the couple who were arguing and they were released to a taxi cab. Bail: $524.

Those arrested and facing criminal charges are innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

UPDATE: Due to increased fire weather conditions, NV Energy has upgraded a Public Safety Outage Management (PSOM) Watch to Warning status in Genoa, southwestern Carson City and Virginia City Highlands in northern Nevada for today, Nov. 13 and into tomorrow morning.
A PSOM warning means a de-energization is likely to prevent the possibility of sparking a wildfire.

NV Energy reports 2,636 customers without power Monday morning in Carson City. The outage was reported at 9:46 a.m. At this time there is not an estimated time of restoration. The cause is under investigation.

UPDATE 5PM: Fire crews will be mopping up the Callahan Fire overnight and into tomorrow. One primary residential structure was lost along with multiple outbuildings. The cause is under investigation at this time. Some fire evacuations remain in place at Callahan Rd and Fawn Lane as crews mop up hot spots. See Perimetermap.com here for evacuation updates.

UPDATE 12:55PM: The fire is estimated at approximately 100 acres; approximately 3,000 people have been impacted by evacuations. Rain is falling on the fire scene. Additional Strike Teams totaling 10-15 engines have begun arriving to assist on the fire, according to Eastern Sierra Fire and Ice, which tracks fires in the region.

Just before 11 a.m. on Monday, the Washoe County Alert system sent out an evacuation notice to residents in the Callahan Ranch area stating they should evacuate immediately.

The evacuation point is at South Valleys Library located at 15650A Wedge Pkwy, Reno.

Dayton Elementary students were treated Friday to a helicopter fly-in by the Nevada National Guard as part of the school's Veterans Day program.

A team from Nevada National Guard landed a helicopter on the soccer field after the school's Veterans Day assembly. Dayton Elementary is the only school in Lyon County that is a Purple Star School.

Veterans Day is Monday, Nov. 11 and is a federal holiday to honor all veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces. A number of events are planned in Carson City and surrounding counties.

Charle Abowd, a world renowned, award-winning chef and restaurateur but even more than that a philanthropist and community fixture for decades, died Saturday evening, according to longtime friends.

Abowd, 73, was a pioneer in farm to table dining, along with his wife Karen who co-owned Cafe at Adele's, he was a champion and supporter of music and the arts. He was a man who dedicated himself to lifting up others.
