Public safety: Expect more motorcycles on road with run up to Street Vibrations
As summer gives way to fall we are seeing the last few weeks of motorcycle riding time for our recreational and fair weather riders. This has led to an increase in motorcycle activity around Carson City as the days are still warm. With Street Vibrations around the corner you will be sharing the roadway with even more riders.
This can lead to an increase in chances for crashes on our streets. Prevention is a word that should be on your mind when operating a motor vehicle or motorcycle. How can I prevent a crash? One of the key elements is to be aware of your surroundings. For riders this means paying attention to the traffic around you.
Stay out of a motorist’s blind spot and watch how the vehicle is being operated. A sudden lane change can spell disaster for you and the driver of the errant vehicle. Make sure that the driver has every opportunity to see you. With all the distractions that we have in vehicles today they may not be paying as much attention as you think.
Drivers, watch your mirrors and check those blind spots. Turn down the radio and put the cell phone away. DVD movies and your navigation GPS device should not be your main focus. A reminder, pets belong secured in your vehicle not on your lap or draped over your arm where they could interfere with the operation of your vehicle.
For both, be sure that your vehicle or motorcycle is road ready.
Check your lights, brakes, and all other safety equipment. Although you may wish to celebrate the end of summer, Don’t Drink and Drive or Ride. Impairment of any kind while operating motorized vehicles can lead to crashes.
We can all reduce car crashes by just looking out for one another. Do your part and drive with care, courtesy, and respect for your fellow motorist.
