Hospitality Workshop Keys on Enhancing Guest Services

Western Nevada College will offer a hospitality skills workshop on Saturday, Feb. 8, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Hampton Inn & Suites in Carson City.

Participants can gain guest service skills in the Guest Service Gold Workshop to become a more valuable employee in today’s competitive job market.

Completion of the three-hour workshop can lead to a Certified Guest Service Professional designation. For employees in the hospitality industry, CGSP is recognized worldwide and is the highest designation of award-winning guest service.

Carson City workshops seek public comment on proposed sales tax plan

Carson City will hold three public workshops this month that are designed to answer questions and solicit comments regarding a proposed 1/8th-cent sales tax to fund several infrastructure projects.

The money would help pay for a new multi-purpose athletic center, known as the “MAC,” a new animal services facility, and streetscape beautification and safety enhancements along the Carson City’s main commercial corridors and the downtown area.

Douglas County side at Lake Tahoe sees 24 arrests overnight during New Year's Eve period

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office reports 24 arrests during the New Year’s Eve celebration in the casino core area of Stateline at Lake Tahoe.

The celebratory crowd seemed no larger than in past years. U.S. Highway 50 was closed to vehicle traffic at about 11:40 p.m. for public safety reasons. The celebrants were allowed to flow into the roadway as they celebrated the coming of the New Year.

New Year's holiday period in Carson City results in drug, battery and DUI arrests

A Carson City man was arrested early New Year's morning and faces a felony charge of drug possession with intent to sell after officers recovered more than an ounce of marijuana and a scale to weigh it with the word "work" taped to it.

Paul John Bekakis, 29, was arrested at 3:25 a.m. near Sixth and Carson streets and was booked into Carson City jail on the drug charge. According to the arrest report, officers did a traffic stop suspecting the driver was under the influence. Officers could smell the odor of marijuana coming from the car.

Carson City deputies make multiple misdemeanor arrests over extended holiday weekend

A 32-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday, 6:21 p.m. in the 500 block of Country Village Drive. He faces a misdemeanor charge of larceny. The man allegedly took two pairs of jeans, a sweater, socks and a long sleeve shirt from a department store in the 3800 block of Carson Street.

Reno police provide details after Carson City murder suspect kills himself at park

More details were made available by Reno police this afternoon after a Carson City man wanted for murder fatally turned the gun on himself in a south Reno park.

Michael Dylan Brentlinger, 22, shot himself once in the head at Manzanita Park using a .45 caliber handgun, the same caliber believed used to kill a Carson City man early Saturday morning inside a Carmine Street home and critically wounding his 19-year-old daughter, said Reno Police Department Lt. William Rulla.

Carson City area casinos see November gaming profits spike

Carson City area casinos saw a nice pre-holidays bump in gaming profits, posting a 7.45 percent increase in November, the Nevada Gaming Control Board reports Monday.

Statewide, Nevada's casinos reported a nearly 12 percent increase in November when compared to gaming figures during the same period a year ago.

Carson City deputies arrest pair suspected of trafficking meth; possession of heroin, mushrooms

Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies arrested a San Jose, Calif. couple Thursday night suspected of trafficking methamphetamine and being in possession of heroin and hallucinogenic mushrooms.

Arrested were Tricia Diane Lopez, 26, a pre-school teacher and Albert Eugene Carlson, 35. Each face felony trafficking charges as well as two felony counts of possession of a schedule 1 controlled substance with intent to sell.

Carson City Sheriff's Office report for Dec. 25

A 21-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Tuesday on a felony failure to appear warrant issued out of Reno Justice Court on drug charges.

Shelby Moorhead is being held without bail on the felony warrant and will be extradited to Reno. She also faces a misdemeanor warrant charge of being in violation of a suspended sentence. There is a $1,000 bail amount issued for that.

Carson City woman jailed, officer injured during arrest

A 22-year-old Carson City woman was arrested early Tuesday morning on multiple misdemeanor charges including resisting arrest and obstructing an officer.

According to the arrest report, the woman was stopped at the intersection of College Parkway and Lompa Lane for going 53 mph in a 40 mph zone at around 12:45 a.m. The woman told the officer that she had just purchased the vehicle she was driving from someone in California and did not have registration or insurance on the vehicle.

Pilot unhurt after Cessna airplane flips during landing at Carson City Airport

UPDATE: The aircraft that landed and flipped early Sunday afternoon at the Carson City Airport was a single-engine Cessna 185. The pilot was not injured, said Carson City Fire Department Battalion Chief Eric Bero.

"There were no flames, no fuel leaks and all the safety systems did their job," said Bero. The incident was report to Carson City dispatch at around 12:05 p.m.

California man arrested on felony drug charge, admits to writing graffiti on bus stop covers

An 18-year-old Concord, Calif., man was booked Friday into Carson City Jail on suspicion of felony possession of methamphetamine and misdemeanor charges related to graffiti after admitting to law officers that he marked up bus stop covers and electrical boxes with a shoe polish pen.

Outdoors with Don Q: Winter Solstice arrives Saturday

The Winter Solstice in Nevada is this Saturday, at 9:11 a.m. The Winter Solstice occurs when the sun reaches its most southerly declination of -23.5 degrees. In other words, it is when the North Pole is tilted 23.5 degrees away from the sun, according to timeanddate.com.

Depending on the Gregorian calendar, the December solstice occurs annually on a day between December 20 and December 23.

Carson City restaurant and food inspection report for week of Dec. 12

Restaurant inspections are made weekly by the Carson City Health and Human Services Environmental Health Division. Inspections for the week of Dec. 12 include restaurants and fast food restaurants, the Carson City Jail, a retail grocery store, and a bar and grill in Carson City. Beginning Jan. 1, 2014 inspections will also be made in Douglas County as part of an inter-local agreement.

Woman jailed on theft charge, says 'evil twin' sister stole cash from friend's purse

A 49-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Dec. 15, 9:12 p.m. in the 3200 block of Imperial Way. Karen Horn faces a felony charge of parole and probation violation, gross misdemeanor theft and a misdemeanor warrant charge.

According to the arrest report, officers responded to the area of 20 College Parkway for a theft report. Horn was over at a friend's residence where the friend discovered that $170 cash and her food stamp cad was missing from her purse.

Carson City schools, supervisors and library partner with strategic plan through 2019

On December 12, 2013 in coordinated efforts with the Carson City School Board and Board of Supervisors, the Library Trustees unanimously adopted Level Up, a strategic plan for learning 2014 – 2019, the library’s next five year plan.

“An educated, skilled citizenry will secure our future. The integration of the strategic plans and the exciting partnerships/collaborations demonstrate that collectively, community leadership gets it. We welcome the challenge and look forward to the possibilities,” said Library Trustee Chairwoman Sandy Foley.

Woman booked into Carson City jail on child neglect, endangerment warrant

A 30-year-old Modesto, Calif., woman was booked into Carson City Jail Thursday, Dec. 12 on a gross misdemeanor warrant charge of child neglect or endangerment and three misdemeanor charges of contempt of court, failure to appear.

The warrant charges were issued out of Carson City Justice Court on June 18 and June 26, 2013. Bail: $4,500.
