Reno police provide details after Carson City murder suspect kills himself at park
More details were made available by Reno police this afternoon after a Carson City man wanted for murder fatally turned the gun on himself in a south Reno park.
Michael Dylan Brentlinger, 22, shot himself once in the head at Manzanita Park using a .45 caliber handgun, the same caliber believed used to kill a Carson City man early Saturday morning inside a Carmine Street home and critically wounding his 19-year-old daughter, said Reno Police Department Lt. William Rulla.
Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong confirmed the identity of Brentlinger shortly after detectives arrived at the scene.
The suspect's father had called Reno police at 12:56 p.m. saying his son had been at his apartment near Manzanita Park and he was worried that he was going to hurt himself, said Rulla.
Officers arrived at the park near the residence a block away. Two officers made verbal contact with Brentlinger where they saw him hiding behind a pine tree, said Rulla.
The officers saw that he was armed with a gun and attempted to engage Brentlinger, speaking with him for 3 to 4 minutes. Brentlinger then took the gun to his head and killed himself. One shell casing was found at the scene, said Rulla.
"We appreciate the public's involvement with this and the number of tips we received. While this is unfortunately the way it ended we're relieved that no one else was hurt," said Rulla.
RPD, Washoe County, the Nevada Highway Patrol and Carson City investigators are still looking for Brentlinger's vehicle, a white 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier. Working off of tips, the vehicle was believed to be seen earlier today in Washoe Valley before Brentlinger killed himself. The vehicle was not anywhere near his father's residence, said Lt. Rulla.
Brentlinger, recently fired from the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles, had once lived at the Carmine Street residence but was told to move out. He was arrested Dec. 5 on charges of trespassing after returning to the home. He also had a restraining order placed on him by his ex-girlfriend to not come near the residence.
The 19-year-old woman, whose name will be released Tuesday by the Carson City Sheriff's Office, was shot once in the face by Brentlinger. She was flown to Renown Medical Center in Reno and remains in the intensive care unit, said Furlong. She is expected to live, said Furlong. Her father, whose name will also be released Tuesday, died at the scene of the shooting.
