WNC baseball team gets off to slow start in Arizona
Submitted by editor on Mon, 02/03/2014 - 6:40pmClinging to a one-run lead with the bases loaded and no one out on Sunday afternoon, the Western Nevada College baseball team had one goal — avoid a sweep on their opening weekend.
Freshman pitcher Dylan Francis complied, retiring the next three South Mountain College hitters to preserve the Wildcats’ 7-6 victory in Phoenix, and a 1-2 weekend.
“Making the pitches he made with the bases loaded was really remarkable. He deserves a ton of credit and praise for his effort,” said WNC coach D.J. Whittemore.
Woman injured in single-car accident on the Carson City freeway

The accident was reported at 12:47 p.m. The driver of the car was reported to have an injury to her arm and a laceration to her head.
Bordewich Bray Elementary evacuated briefly after fire alarm triggered

A call came into dispatch at around 12:30 p.m. asking Carson City firefighters to respond to the school because a fire alarm was triggered and an evacuation was in progress.

Carson City deputies make felony battery, drug arrests during weekend patrol

Jermaine Jordan, 28, is being held on $18,137 bail.
According to the arrest report, Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the 400 block of East Park Street for a fight in progress. While responding, dispatch advised there was a man outside a unit hitting a woman in the head.
Carson City sheriff's deputies make felony drug-related arrests

Mark Tyzbir, 51, was arrested after Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies went to the residence after learning of a domestic dispute there.
Carson High School Bowling Starts 3-0

They beat Sparks High School in their latest matchup and are currently 3-0 to start the season. The other two teams they have beat are Damonte High School and McQueen High School. The Carson High School Bowling team have been in competition now for 12 seasons (This will be season 13) and they have won 11 out of 12 championships.
Traffic stop by Carson City sheriff's SET deputy leads to felony drug arrest

Billy Harris, 67, was removed from a holding cell at around 8:30 a.m. after allegedly punching, spitting and hurling a racial slur at an inmate, according to the arrest report. Bail: $20,000.

Outdoors with Don Q: Escaping Carson City in the wintertime
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Thu, 01/23/2014 - 12:17amFor several years, Elaine and I have fled Carson City for a short time in the month of January or February to escape the cold, snow and ice of our area in the wintertime. This year was no exception, except, sadly, there is no snow.
We had been invited to be guests at the home of my cousin Lorraine and her husband Bob Scholes of Dayton, who spend the winter months in Indio, Calif.
If you, too, would like to temporarily escape winter in Carson City for the next couple of months, here is what we did:

Participants can learn guest service skills in the Guest Service Gold Workshop, to become a more valuable employee in today’s competitive job market.
Completion of the three-hour workshop can lead to a Certified Guest Service Professional designation. For employees in the hospitality industry, CGSP is recognized worldwide and is the highest designation of award-winning guest service.

After the failed city center proposal there seems to be no end to new possibilities for our public officials to spend more taxpayer money. Much like our state and federal governments, increased spending seems to be pandemic. Are these all worthwhile and worthy endeavors?
Doug Busey fishing report: Drought conditions a big concern among anglers

Although I enjoyed fishing without my overalls on, it scares me to think what the summer will have in store for our local lakes and rivers given the drought conditions. Lake Tahoe is just above its natural rim and still going lower.
Lahontan Reservoir in Nevada looks as big as Indian Creek. In Alpine County, the flow in the Walker River is not enough to put a trickle in Topaz Lake. We need to do a rain dance or say a lot of prayers that we get some snowpack in our Sierra's soon.

Carson City woman arrested after allegedly punching, biting her 15-year-old daughter
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Wed, 01/15/2014 - 12:37pmA 34-year-old man was arrested Jan. 14, 8:15 p.m. at 20 College Parkway and is being held without bail on a fugitive from justice warrant out of California, according to the Carson City Sheriff's Office.
Nicholas Schroeder also faces a misdemeanor charge of possession of marijuana. According to the arrest report, officers responded on an anonymous tip that Schroeder was at a residence and had the warrant.

Carson City woman arrested on suspicion of failure to register as a sex offender
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 01/14/2014 - 8:10pmA 23-year-old Carson City woman turned herself into Carson City Jail deputies Monday on a felony charge of suspicion of first offense burglary.
Melissa Eleanor Mulder was being held on $20,000 bondable bail. A warrant for her arrest was issued Jan. 2, 2014 out of Carson City Justice Court.
