Carson City Rotarians to discuss homeschooling during Jan. 4 meeting
Western Nevada College’s homeschooling program is the topic of the next Rotary Club of Carson City meeting. Professor of Psychology and Homeschool Coordinator Dr. Rebecca Bevans will be the featured speaker. The meeting takes place on Tuesday, January 4th at noon in the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom. The public is invited to attend.
WNC offers both onsite and remote learning homeschool options. “Homeschooling is often misunderstood. It’s an option for parents whose children may not be thriving in a traditional educational system, or a student who travels extensively for sports or musical pursuits” she said. “Also, WNC provides much of the teaching, so the burden isn’t entirely on the parent.”
Bevans says the number of students enrolled in the program has grown from 30 to 60 students since 2019, partially due to COVID. “WNC already had remote learning resources in place when the schools shut down. Many parents and students turned to the college for help during the shutdown, and many stayed on,” she says, adding “Our program provides more than just an education. We provide a positive environment for our students, as well as a way to engage socially with other homeschooled kids.”
