Carson City Sheriff's arrest log: Man brandishes knife, arrested for drug possession

A 45 year-old man was taken into custody Thursday evening at 5:53 p.m. at a business in the 900 block of South Carson Street after being found in possession of a controlled substance, a Carson City Sheriff's deputy said.

Brian Anthony Guardias of Carson City was arrested for felony possession of methamphetamine following a law enforcement investigation into a knife-brandishing incident that culminated in a search of his person, from which a meth pipe with trace amount of meth residue was recovered, the arrest report stated.

Deputies were called to the business on report of a person brandishing a weapon and yelling profanities in the street, the report said.

Upon arrival, deputies met with the reporting party (RP), who stated the suspect was armed with a knife and had been waving it around.

Deputies then met with on-site security personnel and staff, who said a male guest had reported being battered by a male suspect on the premises. The description of the reporting male matched that of the suspect reported by the RP earlier, the report said.

Contact was made with the suspect, identified as Guardias, and a female he was with. Both smelled strongly of alcohol, the report said, during the interview process.

Guardias said he had been punched in the face by the female's ex-boyfriend, and he had been knocked to the floor unconscious. Upon regaining consciousness, Guardias said he then confronted the ex-boyfiend in the hall and they began yelling at one another, the report said.

Guardias admitted to deputies that he grabbed a knife and followed the ex-boyfriend, eventually going outside of the building to look for him.

When asked by officers why he chased the other man with a knife instead of using the telephone to call police, Guardias stated he was "defending his tribe," and "no one is going to talk to my girl like that."

Deputies did observe fresh injuries to Guardias' face, the report said, although he declined medical attention.

The female involved stated she had hid in the bathroom when her ex-boyfriend arrived, according to the report, so she did not see the battery take place. But she did state that she saw Guardias leave with a knife in his hand.

As part of the investigation, deputies reviewed video surveillance footage of the area, which did not show a physical altercation between two men.

But the footage did show them appearing to yell at one another before Guardias emerged from a room a few moments later with a knife, following the other male, entering and exiting an elevator, and walking past several patrons throughout the business with the blade in his hands.

According to the report, video footage also showed Guardias walking outside into a street intersection, waving the knife around.

During the course of the law enforcement investigation, management of the business had requested that deputies inform Guardias and the female that they had to leave the premises, the report said.

Upon being told by deputies, Guardias began to yell that there was going to "be a f---ing lawsuit," and slammed a door. The business sought to press charges against Guardias for scaring other guests and brandishing a knife on the property, the report said.

Deputies knocked on the door and Guardias answered, but he refused instructions to exit the room. He was eventually placed in handcuffs and detained.

During the search of the suspect, deputies located the aforementioned drug paraphernalia with drug residue still on it, the report said. A field test of the substance returned presumptive positive for methamphetamine.

Guardias was arrested at that point and transported to the Carson City Jail for booking. Bail: $2,500.

— A 41 year-old Carson City man was arrested late Wednesday night at 11:45 p.m. in the 10 block of Century Circle for misdemeanor stalking and felony possession of a controlled substance, a Carson City Sheriff's deputy said.

According to the report, Jason Lee Vancelette was taken into custody after being found with a piece of foil containing about one gram of a crystal substance identified as methamphetamine.

But this was after deputies had been called to a residence on report of a residential burglary in progress, the report said.

Dispatch relayed to deputies en route to the scene that a male suspect was attempting to break in the front door.

The suspect had been the subject of a prior call and had previously been told to leave the property. Per the report, he evidently returned and was trying to break into the house.

Upon arrival, deputies observed the suspect, later identified as Vancelette, on the front porch of the residence banging on the front door.

He was ordered at gunpoint to lie on the ground, the report said. Vancelette complied with deputy orders and was safely detained.

Officers then spoke with the residents inside the home. An adult female was visibly shaken and crying, the report said. She stated to deputies that she felt frightened and was fearful for the immediate safety of her family, which included three children inside of the home.

During the search of his person, deputies discovered the meth on Vancelette, who was subsequently arrested and transported to the Carson City Jail for booking. Bail: $2,500.

— A 57 year-old Carson City man was arrested Thursday night at 8:57 p.m. in the 3200 block of Champion Drive for misdemeanor first offense domestic battery and obstruction, a Carson City Sheriff's deputy said.

According to the report, deputies were called to the scene on report of domestic battery. The RP had told dispatch that her husband was being battered by his step-father, who was said to have been intoxicated and leaving the residence on foot.

Deputies located the suspect upon arrival walking away from the residence, appearing visbily intoxicated and unsteady on his feet. He smelled strongly of alcohol, the officers noted in making contact with him.

The suspect was detained in handcuffs during the investigation, the report said.

The victim reported that his step-father was already intoxicated when he drove up to a Moundhouse bar. The victim and the RP went to the bar after him out of concern that he shouldn't drive home, the report said.

The suspect agreed to leave with them, but then became upset once back at the residence because his step-son had taken his car keys and was not allowing him to drive, the report said.

The victim said he tried to help his step-father out of the car and into the house, but the suspect yelled at him in anger, eventually punching him on the left side of his face when the car keys were refused.

Deputies observed visible injuries to the left side of the victim's face. The RP's acccount of the incident was consistent with that of the victim, the report said.

The suspect had agreed to speak with deputies curbside, appearing grossly intoxicated and slurring his words, the report said.

A preliminary breath test (PBT) was administered, revealing breath-alcohol content of .155 percent, the report said.

The suspect claimed that the victim had punch him several times after refusing to give him the car keys. He initially denied hitting his step-son, but later admitted he did so in "self-defense," the report said.

The suspect was observed to have no visible injuries despite his claim of being punched multiple times.

During a search of the suspect, he began to yell at the RP. He then resisted the deputy's effort to get him to comply with the search by pulling his arms away.

The suspect then make a noise as though preparing to spit, turning his head toward the deputy, who thought he was going to get spit on, the report said.

In response, the deputy performed a leg sweep that took the suspect to the ground where the search could be completed safely.

The suspect was then placed in the patrol vehicle and transported to the Carson City Jail for booking without further incident. Bail: $3,000.

— A 26 year-old Carson City woman was arrested Thursday morning at 8:16 a.m. in the 1200 block of East Fifth Street on misdemeanor violation of a domestic order, a Carson City Sheriff's deputy said.

Law enforcement arrived at the location a few minutes earlier to serve a domestic protection order on the suspect. Contact was made first with the applicant, followed by the suspect, who was in a bedroom inside the residence.

A deputy read the order to her and she stood up from the bed to accept the paperwork. However, the suspect began using defamatory language toward the officer and advised she needed to change, the report said, subsequently slamming the door shut and locking it.

Deputies waited more than 12 minutes before knocking on the bedroom door, but the suspect did not respond. A crash was heard inside the room, the report said, but the suspect refused to answer when deputies knocked again.

She did, however, send a text message to the protection order applicant, asking "where am I supposed to go?" At that point, per the report, the order had been violated and the applicant provided a key to the bedroom.

Deputies unlocked and opened the door, advising the suspect she was in violation of the order. The suspect leapt on the bed despite being advised she was under arrest, the report said.

Deputies negotiated with the suspect for about five minutes to come down off the bed. She was passively resistant, the report said, not complying with officer directions.

Finally, deputies were able to reach for the suspect and place her in handcuffs without incident.

She was placed into the patrol vehicle and transported to the Carson City Jail for booking. Bail: $3,000.

— A 49 year-old Carson City woman was arrested Thursday night at 7:50 p.m. in the area of North Fall and East John streets for misdemeanor driving under the influence and failure to yield the right of way, a Carson City Sheriff's deputy said.

According to the report, a suspect vehicle had turned out of a driveway onto William Street directly in front of a patrol vehicle, forcing the latter to apply emergency braking.

The suspect vehicle then turned on to Fall Street without the use of a turn signal.

A traffic stop was conducted and the deputy made contact with the driver, who smelled strongly of alcohol and exhibited slow, thick speech.

When asked, the suspect admitted to having been drinking and consented to field sobriety testing (FST), all of which were unsuccessfully attempted, according to the arrest report.

A PBT was also performed, revealing BAC of .150 percent.

At that point, the suspect was handcuffed and transported to the Carson City Jail for booking. Bail: $1,000.
