Arriving cold weather prompts Carson City to offer homeless shelter relief
UPDATE: The Carson City community has responded with several donations left at Friends in Service Helping, otherwise known as FISH, after temperatures plummeted to single-digits around Carson City early Wednesday morning. On Monday Carson City and FISH agreed to open a relief shelter at Fuji Park because of the active cold weather pattern in the region.
Carson City resident and Nevada Live Magazine online publisher Dana Lee Freund notes she spoke with FISH representatives who said the shelter needs hats, gloves, warm coats, can openers, and hygiene items like disposable razors, deodorant, and tooth paste/brushes. Items should be dropped off at the administration office which is adjacent to the Carson Thrift store, not Fuji Park.
Fruend said if people can't drop off their items to donate at FISH they can do so at the Nevada Day Store & Trading Post, 108 W. Telegraph Street from 10am to 2pm Tuesday through Saturday. Special requests, call Dana at 775 230-2232 or Danielle Seitz, 775-230-5677.

Carson City government officials, Parks and Recreation and Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH, agreed Monday to open the Fuji Park Pavilion this week for the city's homeless with critical needs, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.
Temperatures this week during the New Year's holiday are anticipated to drop considerably, and officials believe this storm could pose a critical risk of life to many people who have no ability to provide their own shelter. FISH staff will manage and operate the emergency shelter, said Furlong. Temperatures are expected to be in the single-digits overnight with a windchill factor well below zero.
In consideration, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office reports that deaths due to winter storms and severe cold exposure in Northern Nevada are not uncommon and Carson City is no exception.
The most common areas where the deaths occur is in our southern areas of town. This can be attributed to the many homeless persons who generally stay in the foothill areas west of South Carson Street.
"Sadly, some of the deaths are not discovered until the warmer Spring weather entices hikers and outdoor enthusiasts to begin walking the trails," said Furlong.
