Carson City jobless rate falls to 9.1 percent in November, statewide drops to 9 percent
The jobless rate in Carson City fell to 9.1 percent in November, part of an overall trend statewide for the month where Nevada’s unemployment rate fell to 9 percent, down from 9.3 percent in October, making it the most significant improvement in the unemployment in a year, according to the state's Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.
Carson City's unemployment had increased in October to 9.6 percent.
“I am encouraged by recent labor market trends,” Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval said. “The unemployment rate is the lowest it has been since November 2008 and employment has increased for 35 consecutive months (measured on a year-over-year basis), with nearly every sector of Nevada’s economy making a contribution. As we end 2013, Nevada expects to have added approximately 50,000 jobs since 2010. However, with 123,000 Nevadans still unemployed, we must continue our efforts to strengthen and diversify the State’s economy.”
For the second month the state has added jobs, with an adjusted addition of 9,500 in November relative to October, said Bill Anderson, chief economist for Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation. Each of the metropolitan areas saw year over year and monthly declines in their rates of unemployment. Las Vegas’ rate fell to 8.6 percent; Reno’s rate measured at 8.2 percent and Carson City’s rate stands at 9.1 percent.
“While the continued decline in the unemployment rate is good news, Nevada’s recovery is still slow compared to other states,” Anderson said. “Because the Silver State was the hardest hit, its recovery will take longer. Of the jobs lost during 2007 to 2011, about one-quarter of them have returned.”
