Nevada State Parks meetings to discuss money for trail systems available through grant

The Nevada Division of State Parks will host the Recreational Trails Program Advisory Committee Meeting for 2022 grant funding this Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 7-8.

The meeting will be held in a virtual format, beginning each morning at 8:30 am and adjourning by 5 p.m. Members of the public are welcome to attend via Microsoft Teams, or through a phone conference line, to listen to each presentation. Prior to the start of each morning session, the floor will be opened for public comment. Public comments will be limited to three minutes per person.

During the meeting, each applicant will be given 10 minutes to provide a formal presentation about their project to the RTP Advisory Committee, which will be followed by a 10-minute question and answer period directed by committee members.

Through this federally funded program, Nevada will receive approximately $1.2 million in RTP grant funds in 2022 for the purpose of providing outdoor recreational trail activities.

RTP funds may be used for planning and construction of motorized and non-motorized trail projects and educational outreach programs. Eligible entities include federal, state, local and tribal governments, special government districts, and private individuals and organizations.

Previous projects have included the Tahoe Transportation District’s Shoreline Access Trails, Red Rock Trail Restoration, Logandale Moto Restrooms and Northern Nevada Trail Education. Allocation of grant funds will be competitively determined by the State Parks Administrator based on recommendations from the RTP Advisory Committee.

With daily news reports of gang shootouts and knifings in cities all across America, I thought it would be good time to update our community on where Carson City stands when it comes to dealing with local gang issues. UPDATE MONDAY MORNING: The Slide Fire that grew to 80 acres overnight and is 10 percent contained as of Monday morning, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

On International Overdose Awareness Day, Assistant to the Secretary for Rural Development Anne Hazlett announced Friday that USDA has formalized an innovative agreement in which a nonprofit organization will purchase homes from the Department and convert them to transitional housing for people recovering from opioid misuse.

Carson City Fire Department and Nevada Highway Patrol were called Sunday afternoon to a vehicle accident in the southbound lane of I-580 north of Arrowhead.

A 52 year-old transient man was arrested Friday afternoon at 1:04 p.m. in the 3200 block of Market Street on misdemeanor charges of ex-felon failing to register and soliciting motorists, a Carson City Sheriff's deputy reported.

UPDATE: 01:30PM: According to Carson City Dispatch, the smoke seen coming from the apartment was from a pot left on the stove. There was no fire.

Virginia City has come to be known for embracing the strange, the odd, and the downright weird.

Trees are dropping leaves or needles. Leaves may be turning brown. Some are showing fall colors. What’s going on with trees?

The days are getting shorter, and many plant processes are triggered by day-length. However, there may be stress issues at work as well.

The sun peeked over the Pine Nut Range east of Carson City just a few minutes after 6:30 a.m. Saturday morning. The morning temperature low at that time was about 47 degrees.

It’s nice that the beginning of the school year is almost immediately rewarded with a three-day weekend. You’ll find annual events like Civil War Days in Virginia City and the Best in the West Rib Cook-off in Sparks, in addition to smaller happenings like the monthly Downtown Carson City Wine Walk and a roller derby double-header. Carson City emergency crews are responding to a report of a single-vehicle crash into the center median guardrail of the Interstate 580 southbound lane at the Clearview Drive underpass.

Law enforcement is on scene providing traffic control at the scene of the crash. No reports of any injuries. Motorists in the area can expect slow going until the accident is cleared.

CARSON CITY — Florence Phillips is 88 years old, and has dedicated the last 15 years to helping people in our community learn English and even become citizens. Because of her hard work, and the work of her tutors and students, the ESL In-Home Program of Northern Nevada was nominated by CNN Heroes.

Terry Hogan, a retired physical education and science teacher and coach at Carson High School, will be running in the Reno 10 Miler race Sept. 9 to raise money for breast cancer research.

A 49-year-old Carson City man was arrested Thursday evening in the 1900 block of N. Fall Street on Tahoe Township traffic warrants after deputies responded to a call regarding possible threats.
