Holiday favorite Reno 'TubaChristmas' goes virtual in 2020
Reno has been presenting TubaChristmas performances since 1989 and the organizers aren't going to let a little global pandemic stop their fun this year! They invite tuba, euphonium, and baritone horn players of all ages to join virtual Reno TubaChristmas 2020.
With the permission of the Harvey Phillips Foundation, founder and administrator of worldwide TubaChristmas events, David Bugli has created a medley of TubaChristmas songs, Christmas Tuba Fantasy, for 2020. This musical arrangement is dedicated to the memory of Gary Robert Buchanan (1948-2020), who conducted Reno TubaChristmas performances from 2004 to 2019.
Participants record videos of themselves playing the part of their choice to be incorporated into a single performance video that will be posted on YouTube. All of the music and instructions are available at DavidBugli.com/tuba2020.htm.
The recordings are due by Monday, Nov. 23. The composite Reno TubaChristmas 2020 video will be released in mid-December.
Reno TubaCristmas Coordinator, Todd DeVito, said, “Since this is a TubaChristmas event, we encourage everyone to dress themselves and their horns in their most festive TubaChristmas attire! Also, please invite your low brass friends (and students) to participate.”
In past years, Reno TubaChristmas featured about 35 musicians, from middle school students to senior citizens, mainly from northern Nevada, in live performances. This year, the Reno virtual event is also attracting musicians from throughout the U.S., including California, Arizona, Oregon, Colorado, Kansas, and New York, and even a tubist from Sweden.
To ensure future TubaChristmas performances, a $5 donation is requested from participants. Viewing the video will be free. For more information, contact Todd DeVito at tubaxmasreno@yahoo.com or DCBugli@aol.com.
