Carson City Sheriff's Office warns motorists not to leave vehicles unattended when warming them up
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office would like to remind drivers about the dangers of leaving your motor vehicle running unattended. This is especially important when “warming up” vehicles during cold weather.
With winter upon us, people are starting their vehicles and leaving them unattended. This is especially dangerous as there are criminals that are preying on these unattended vehicles. It’s an easy opportunity that these criminals are looking for. It only takes a criminal second’s to enter your vehicle and take it. Remember if you keep your house keys on your vehicle key ring, the criminal now has a key to your residence.
Nobody wants to drive a cold vehicle. However take the necessary steps to protect your property. Always lock your vehicle doors. Not only are criminals looking to take your vehicle they are also looking for any opportunity to enter the vehicle to steal your stuff. If you do warm up your vehicle in the morning please don’t leave it unattended. A lot of the newer vehicles are equipped with automatic start that allows you to warm your vehicle without leaving your vehicle keys in the vehicle. In addition, if a criminal attempts to take your vehicle the vehicles are equipped with security devices that turn the vehicle off.
In addition to the dangers of leaving your motor-vehicle unattended, it’s against Nevada Revised Statute. NRS 484B.530 Unattended motor vehicle: Stopping engine, locking ignition and removing key. The person driving or in charge of any motor vehicle, except a commercial vehicle loading or unloading goods, shall not permit it to stand unattended without first stopping the engine, locking the ignition and removing the key.
Please take the necessary precautions to protect yourself. Don’t be a victim.
